Download or read book Touch Me Not written by José Rizal and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Touch Me Not (1887) is a novel by José Rizal. Published in Berlin, the novel was originally conceived as a collaborative project to be written by a group of Filipino nationalist writers living in Madrid. Disappointed in his comrades’ lack of engagement, however, Rizal wrote the novel alone, blending aspects of his own life story with his critique of Spanish imperialism in the Philippines. Banned by Spanish authorities, the novel was smuggled into his home country, where it quickly galvanized Rizal’s fellow nationalists in opposition to the Spanish Empire. Returning home to Laguna province after seven years in Europe, Crisóstomo Ibarra, a young mestizo man, attempts to pick up the pieces following the death of his father. Noticing some hostility from Padre Dámaso, a local curate who had long been a friend of his family, Crisóstomo soon learns that his father’s death may not have been an accident after all. Focusing on his goal of building a school for the local children, Crisóstomo longs to do justice to Don Rafael Ibarra’s legacy. When he goes to visit his grave, however, he is told by the groundskeeper that his father’s body was moved to a local Chinese burial ground following an order by Padre Dámaso. As the story unfolds, a vast web of conspiracy involving Spanish authorities and Filipino revolutionaries threatens Crisóstomo’s life while testing the limits of his loyalty to family and nation alike. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of José Rizal’s Touch Me Not is a classic work of Filipino literature reimagined for modern readers.

Download or read book Noli Me Tangere written by José Rizal and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2024-10-21T20:31:09Z with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noli Me Tangere takes place towards the end of the Spanish colonization of the Philippines. It deals with the corruption that had worked its way into the church and governing authorities over the centuries. The title, Latin for “touch me not,” is a reference to the passage in the Gospel of John, where the resurrected Jesus tells Mary Magdalene not to cling to him. It also refers to types of cancer sores that are very painful and irritated by touch, serving as a metaphor for the state of Philippine society that Rizal perceived. Crisóstomo Ibarra returns from Europe after years of study, shortly after the death of his father. He plans to marry his childhood sweetheart, María Clara, and to open a school in his hometown. Crisóstomo is a hopeful idealist, believing that the Filipinos can improve their situation if given a proper education. But a friend warns him that he will make enemies by undertaking such a project—and in fact, he already has enemies. Soon past secrets emerge, and Crisóstomo must deal with unnamed forces working against him. Together with its sequel, El Filibusterismo, Noli Me Tangere indirectly influenced Philippine revolutionary sentiment to such an extent that Rizal was exiled and subsequently executed by the Spanish government. Both novels were long banned in the Philippines, but today are required reading for students, with Rizal considered a national hero. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book Synopsis Beyond the Blockades by : Chaplin Chang
Download or read book Beyond the Blockades written by Chaplin Chang and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although only 10 stories here yet they interestingly revealed how the writer at his teens, handicapped with limited education and funds, was forced to cheat his way into Chinese and British Navy to become a sailor and later worked as chief officer on freighters running through the blockades; how he dealt in Communist China when confronted with Communist's irrational teenage cadres and what happened when Nationalist's special-agent wanted him to hyjack the ship to Taiwan. Then what did he do when seeing a lady jumping overboard which also brought out another story about a man stopped at the brink of jumping down the tallest building in Canton and started a new life in Macao. The writer also recorded his long, unfulfilled secret love affair that spilled out the thousand-year-old inhuman tradition in China; the effect on a man when nepotism and the closely-circled territory before and during early nineteen forties in the old Chinese Navy; how a British sailor sacrificed his opportunity to join his ship in order to help an unknown Chinese sailor in England; then in Hong Kong, the power-struggling for the control of a ship and her 'human-cargo' (soldiers) during the civil war in China. Fascinating and informative stories.
