They wanted to experience this adventure while they were young. Their four-year adventure started from California to Hawaii. Joe was twenty-eight and Tonia was twenty-five. Joe was born in Poland, raised in an Orthodox Jewish home, spoke five languages, and had an MA degree in horticulture. Tonia was a California woman with an artistic talent and a hunger for knowledge and adventure. They wanted to learn about the varied cultures of the world. Their travel through Asia and Europe was at a time when major global adjustments were leading to World War II. They traveled as cheaply as possible, which meant deck class on ocean liners, third and fourth class on trains. This volume covers their adventures through French Indo-China and into Burma.

An excellent introduction.”--Dick Newick, legendary catamaran and trimaran designer “If you are contemplating spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a cruising catamaran, the small price of this book is probably the best investment you could possibly start with.”--from the Foreword by Charles K. Chiodi, publisher of Multihulls Magazine

Book excerpt: When it comes to a career in coaching sports, there is no teaching without doing—and practice doesn’t just make perfect, it makes a whole life. In this heartfelt memoir, first-time author Thomas H. Peart recounts the story of his experiences growing up in Alexandria, Minnesota, playing hockey, joining the US Marine Corps, attending college, and eventually entering a lengthy and impressive career as a coach for high school, college, and professional hockey—both stateside and overseas—alongside a number of other sports. Beginning in childhood and throughout his life, all the way up to the moment of his authoring this very book, Peart’s career as a coach is a testament to the value of learning through experience, teaching with care and respect, and always remaining open to opportunity. A satisfying slice of life in the postwar American Midwest, this book will make a great addition to the shelves of Peart’s contemporaries, as well as anyone interested in the worlds of amateur and professional sports. Because those who do, teach—and those who teach, do.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Special Relationship provides not only a historical overview of the British in Hollywood, but also a detailed study of the contributions made by American individuals and companies to British cinema from the beginning of the twentieth century onwards. The story begins with Ohio-born Charles Urban who came to London in 1898 and deserves credit for major involvement in the creation of a British film industry. While Ireland was still a part of Britain, the New York-based Kalem Company made films there from 1910 to 1913. British producers realized the importance of American stars, and many actors, beginning with Florence Turner (who was arguably also the first American star), made numerous British films. In the 1920s, such Hollywood stars as Mae Marsh, Betty Blythe, and Dorothy Gish remained active in Britain. In the 1930s, as their careers came to a halt, more than one hundred former American stars made the trip to England, partly as a vacation and partly in the hope of reenergizing their careers. Chapters discuss American cinematographers at work in Britain in the 1920s and 1930s and the introduction of Technicolor to British films. Diversity is represented by African American performers (most notably Paul Robeson), the Chinese American star Anna May Wong, along with female filmmakers from Hollywood. With Britain's declaration of war on Germany, there were Americans who stayed, such as Bebe Daniels and Ben Lyon, contributing to the war effort. America became actively involved in British cinema after World War II, with many Hollywood studios producing films there. As the years progressed, the British film industry became an international film industry. The book concludes with the Harry Potter and James Bond series, indicative of a new international cinema, with financing and behind-the-camera talent coming from the United States, but with British locales and British stars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the story ñA Natural Thing,î Eric and MonicaÍs lovemaking is interrupted by an odd sound. Eric has a sinking feeling that it has something to do with his grandfather. HeÍs mortified when he sees what has entered the room: A full-grown rooster, its wattles cut, the feathers trimmed except the wings; its legs plucked to pimpled skin, strutting and bobbing its head like it owned the place. Instantly, Eric realizes that Don Epifanio has converted the basement into a cock-fighting ring. When Don Epifanio offered to renovate the basement it seemed like a blessing, something to keep him busy. Why did he bring the old man to New York City from the island, Eric wonders. Now Don Epifanio complains about everything: the cold weather, the even colder disposition of gringos, the difficulty of finding guayabas and other tropical delicacies. What will the neighbors say when they hear and worse, smell the roosters? How can he bring business associates home? What will Monica think about his family? This is the Bronx, not Puerto Rico! In this stirring collection of eleven stories set in Latino communities in the northeast, J.L. Torres crafts deft reflections of Puerto Ricans living on the mainland. A son who follows his fatherÍs wish to be buried in his beloved isla but canÍt seem to meet his fatherÍs other wish to not be covered with the American flag, a right he has as a veteran of World War II and Korea. A Nuyorican visiting his aunt in Cayey is fascinated with a run-down shack where a mysterious woman lives, surrounded by conflicting stories about her life and loves. In the Bronx, Ralph and Lou are unnerved by a spooky sight: eight red kerchiefs tied equidistantly apart on a cyclone fence. TorresÍ characters reveal the circumstances that shape their lives in these thought-provoking stories that explore machismo, family relationships, love, and even santeria.
