Book excerpt: Impulsive or time-decaying disturbances of sufficient magnitude will cause a gravitygradient control-moment-gyro stabilized spacecraft to tumble. A procedure for operating a thruster system by ground command to perform reacquisition was functionally designed and evaluated on an analog computer. When the disturbance has ceased, an on-board thruster system is used to aline the total angular momentum vector of the spacecraft in an orientation that allows the control-moment gyros to damp all spacecraft motion into a single axis. For a spacecraft in a Sun-synchronous orbit, a procedure was found to shorten the time for attitude reacquisition by using a solar array for crude attitude information.
Book Synopsis A Two-gyro Semi-passive Attitude Control System for Earth Pointing Satellites by : N. E. Ives
Download or read book A Two-gyro Semi-passive Attitude Control System for Earth Pointing Satellites written by N. E. Ives and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is concerned with an earth-pointing satellite (in a circular orbit) making use of gravity gradient stabilization. A pair of gyros act as control elements by providing damping of attitude motion. The gyros are not torqued in any way; they are free to process relative to the satellite except for spring and viscous damper constraints applied to the gimbals. Attitude motion is damped by energy dissipation in the viscous medium as a result of relative motion between gimbals and satellite. Power must be supplied to drive the rotors of the gyros which are referred to as semi-passive control elements. The aim of the study was to investigate the possibility of using a pair of damper gyros to bring a satellite into an earth-pointing attitude from the angular rates which may exist at orbit injection, or which may be initiated as a result of meteoric impacts at a later stage of the satellite's life. It is found that for a particular design of a two-gyro damper, earth-pointing stabilization is achieved from an arbitrary initial attitude and a limited range of attitude rates. (Author).
Book Synopsis A System for Inertial Experiment Pointing and Attitude Control by : Peter R. Kurzhals
Download or read book A System for Inertial Experiment Pointing and Attitude Control written by Peter R. Kurzhals and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A system for inertial experiment pointing and attitude control (designated SIXPAC) of future manned spacecraft has been investigated. The SIXPAC concept consists of three double-gimbaled control moment gyros aligned with the axes of the spacecraft, and derives its control torques from precession of the gyro wheels. This system is readily mechanized, has inherent redundancy, and should provide a wider range of attitude control for manned spacecraft than the gyro systems previously considered. The SIXPAC can provide both the large range of control torques and the fine attitude holds associated with spacecraft experiments such as earth-surface tracking and mapping, photographic missions, and astronomical observations. Periodic aerodynamic and gravity-gradient torques can also be counteracted by the proposed system. Redundancies inherent to the three-gyro arrangement further allow reduced spacecraft control in case of failure or shutdown of one of the three gyros. The complete equations of motion for a spacecraft with the SIXPAC were developed, and were integrated numerically on a digital computer for an example mission with a possible Apollo applications concept. Results of this computer study were used to evaluate the spacecraft and control system response and to determine the power and fuel consumption of the SIXPAC. Characteristics time histories of the attitude and angular rates of the spacecraft are presented for a number of experiments that have been proposed for typical Apollo applications missions, and the performance of the gyro system is analyzed during the control tasks associated with these experiments.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 877 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roger D. Werking Head, Attitude Determination and Control Section National Aeronautics and Space Administration/ Goddard Space Flight Center Extensiye work has been done for many years in the areas of attitude determination, attitude prediction, and attitude control. During this time, it has been difficult to obtain reference material that provided a comprehensive overview of attitude support activities. This lack of reference material has made it difficult for those not intimately involved in attitude functions to become acquainted with the ideas and activities which are essential to understanding the various aspects of spacecraft attitude support. As a result, I felt the need for a document which could be used by a variety of persons to obtain an understanding of the work which has been done in support of spacecraft attitude objectives. It is believed that this book, prepared by the Computer Sciences Corporation under the able direction of Dr. James Wertz, provides this type of reference. This book can serve as a reference for individuals involved in mission planning, attitude determination, and attitude dynamics; an introductory textbook for stu dents and professionals starting in this field; an information source for experimen ters or others involved in spacecraft-related work who need information on spacecraft orientation and how it is determined, but who have neither the time nor the resources to pursue the varied literature on this subject; and a tool for encouraging those who could expand this discipline to do so, because much remains to be done to satisfy future needs.

This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flight Vehicle Dynamics and Control Rama K. Yedavalli, The Ohio State University, USA A comprehensive textbook which presents flight vehicle dynamics and control in a unified framework Flight Vehicle Dynamics and Control presents the dynamics and control of various flight vehicles, including aircraft, spacecraft, helicopter, missiles, etc, in a unified framework. It covers the fundamental topics in the dynamics and control of these flight vehicles, highlighting shared points as well as differences in dynamics and control issues, making use of the ‘systems level’ viewpoint. The book begins with the derivation of the equations of motion for a general rigid body and then delineates the differences between the dynamics of various flight vehicles in a fundamental way. It then focuses on the dynamic equations with application to these various flight vehicles, concentrating more on aircraft and spacecraft cases. Then the control systems analysis and design is carried out both from transfer function, classical control, as well as modern, state space control points of view. Illustrative examples of application to atmospheric and space vehicles are presented, emphasizing the ‘systems level’ viewpoint of control design. Key features: Provides a comprehensive treatment of dynamics and control of various flight vehicles in a single volume. Contains worked out examples (including MATLAB examples) and end of chapter homework problems. Suitable as a single textbook for a sequence of undergraduate courses on flight vehicle dynamics and control. Accompanied by a website that includes additional problems and a solutions manual. The book is essential reading for undergraduate students in mechanical and aerospace engineering, engineers working on flight vehicle control, and researchers from other engineering backgrounds working on related topics.
