It has already contributed a great deal to knowledge of the causes of disease and it might be thought that the subject had little more to teach. This, however, is unlikely. First, there are many parts of the world that have only recently been provided with the full range of diagnostic services. Secondly, it is now realised that the ob servation that a disease occurs only very rarely under some conditions can be just as important as the observation that it occurs very often under others. Thirdly, the spread of industrializa tion has not yet eliminated the wide variety of conditions of life that has been produced by different cultures and different standards of living. We have still an opportunity to determine their effect on the incidence of disease, but not perhaps for long. That an interest in the geography of cancer can pay dividends is shown by many examples ranging from the relationships between cancer of the buccal cavity and chewing habits and between cancer of the lung and smoking, to the current enquiries relating Burkitt's lymphoma to malaria, cancer of the oesophagus to the comsumption of maize beer, cancer of the liver to food contaminated with aflatoxin, and cancer of the large bowel to the dietary content of fibre and fat.

It provides impressive evidence of the con cern that workers in environmental psychology and environmental design are displaying for the child as a user of the designed environment and indi cates a recognition of the need to apply theory and findings from develop mental and environmental psychology to the design of environments for children. This seems to me to mark a shift in focus and concern from the earlier days of the interaction between environmental designers and psy chologists that occurred some two decades ago and provided the impetus for the establishment of environmental psychology as a subdiscipline. Whether because children-though they are consumers of designed environments are not the architect's clients or because it seemed easier to work with adults who could be asked to make ratings of environmental spaces and comment on them at length, a focus on the child in interaction with en vironments was comparatively slow in developing in the field of environ ment and behavior. As the chapters of the present volume indicate, that situation is no longer true today, and this is a change that all concerned with the well-being and optimal functioning of children will welcome.

Freed by an "amnesty," he joined the Polish Army, and when it moved to the Middle East, Lucjan resumed his theology studies, pronounced his vows, and became a chaplain to a Polish military hospital in Egypt. Reassigned to refugee camps in East Africa, Fr. Lucjan and the wandering Polish children met again in 1947 — a meeting that began a long and loving relationship. In 1949 when the Warsaw Communists claimed guardianship of the Polish orphans in Africa and demanded their repatriation, Fr. Lucjan was forced into a world of international intrigue. Called by the Communists "a kidnapper on an international scale," to his orphans, he was the good shepherd who led them to Canada, where he helped his charges overcome the theft of their childhood and become secure adults in a new world. Stolen Childhood is the book of memories he wrote for them, and a cautionary history for people of good will.
