Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exact reprint edition of the definitive work on stereographs originally published by the author in 1977. Intended as a survey and guide to stereographs, it considers them from four points of view: historical, geographical, topical, and by the photographers who produced them. Two checklists include: the names and locations of 3500 North American stereographers arranged alphabetically by states; and a world register of 4200 cited photographers giving the countries and approximate dates of activity, with references to the pages of the book on which they are cited. Three hundred illustrations of stereographs supplement the text.

From the late 1800s until the advent of radio and television, stereoscope viewers were one of the most popular forms of home entertainment. Special cameras make stereoscopic cards, which feature two images set side-by-side. Seen through the viewer, the two photos merge to create a strikingly lifelike 3-D image. You can still experience the thrill of seeing world landmarks up close and personal, with an added dimension. Combine time travel with a trip to London, all from the comfort of your own home. Here is London in the great era of Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, brought to life in rare, original, three-dimensional photographs. Included are views of such iconic London sights as Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London and the famous Beefeaters, nighttime on the Thames, Petticoat Lane, the Tower Bridge, and London Bridgeâ?¬â? when it was still in London. The book's built-in stereoscopic lenses make viewing the photographs a snap. Extensive captions describe the history of each of the landmarks portrayed in the book. Experience the depth and realism no ordinary photograph or movie can offer, all in a tidy, bound book, so you can't lose your stereoscope viewer!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the earliest years of cinema, travelogues were a staple of variety film programs in commercial motion picture theaters. These short films, also known as "scenics," depicted tourist destinations and exotic landscapes otherwise inaccessible to most viewers. Scenics were so popular that they were briefly touted as the future of film. But despite their pervasiveness during the early twentieth century, travelogues have been overlooked by film historians and critics. In Education in the School of Dreams, Jennifer Lynn Peterson recovers this lost archive. Through innovative readings of travelogues and other nonfiction films exhibited in the United States between 1907 and 1915, she offers fresh insights into the aesthetic and commercial history of early cinema and provides a new perspective on the intersection of American culture, imperialism, and modernity in the nickelodeon era. Peterson describes the travelogue's characteristic form and style and demonstrates how imperialist ideologies were realized and reshaped through the moving image. She argues that although educational films were intended to legitimate filmgoing for middle-class audiences, travelogues were not simply vehicles for elite ideology. As a form of instructive entertainment, these technological moving landscapes were both formulaic and also wondrous and dreamlike. Considering issues of spectatorship and affect, Peterson argues that scenics produced and disrupted viewers' complacency about their own place in the world.

Book excerpt: When Eddy Hall receives five cards for his stereoscope, he and his sister, Eleanor, can't wait to see what exotic places they reveal maybe Stonehenge, or a centuries-old European cathedral. But instead, when they look through the stereoscope, Eddy and Eleanor see some very strange things. An odd-looking rope hangs from the sky down into every picture. A marmalade coloured cat that looks suspiciously like Herm, the family cat, also appears. And one picture looks like the front hall of their very own house! The images seem to be almost real, not just three-dimensional illusions. All it will take is one little tug on that rope to find out for sure ....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's in a shadow? Menace, seduction, or salvation? Immaterial but profound, shadows lurk everywhere in literature and the visual arts, signifying everything from the treachery of appearances to the unfathomable power of God. From Plato to Picasso, from Rembrandt to Welles and Warhol, from Lord of the Rings to the latest video game, shadows act as central players in the drama of Western culture. Yet because they work silently, artistic shadows often slip unnoticed past audiences and critics. Conceived as an accessible introduction to this elusive phenomenon, Grasping Shadows is the first book that offers a general theory of how all shadows function in texts and visual media. Arguing that shadow images take shape within a common cultural field where visual and verbal meanings overlap, William Sharpe ranges widely among classic and modern works, revealing the key motifs that link apparently disparate works such as those by Fra Angelico and James Joyce, Clementina Hawarden and Kara Walker, Charles Dickens and Kumi Yamashita. Showing how real-world shadows have shaped the meanings of shadow imagery, Grasping Shadows guides the reader through the techniques used by writers and artists to represent shadows from the Renaissance onward. The last chapter traces how shadows impact the art of the modern city, from Renoir and Zola to film noir and projection systems that capture the shadows of passers-by on streets around the globe. Extending his analysis to contemporary street art, popular songs, billboards, and shadow-theatre, Sharpe demonstrates a practical way to grasp the "dark side" that looms all around us.
