Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Theory of Alternating Currents, Vol. 2 In this volume I have endeavoured to give a sketch of the theory of the working of alternating apparatus in the hope that it will prove helpful to engineers, teachers and advanced students. In addition to the more elementary parts of the theory, an introduction is given to several of the more difficult problems which arise in practical work. The questions of armature reaction, of phase swinging and of free and forced oscillations, of the magnetic effects produced by various types of windings, etc., have often been discussed at the meetings of technical societies in this and other countries. In some of the papers which are published in the proceedings of these societies, theorems are quoted from books or journals which are not readily accessible, and in others an advanced theoretical knowledge is assumed. It was thought, therefore, that an introduction to the theory would prove useful to many. Formulae obtained from admittedly imperfect theory are often used in the practical design of electrical machinery, and it is of great importance to know their limitations. The utility of many of the theorems given below has been amply proved by modifications of the design of several well-known types of apparatus. I have to thank many engineers for their kind permission to make use of their papers or for furnishing me with experimental data. In particular I wish to thank the Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon. In the first two chapters the theory of single and polyphase alternators 1b set forth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating Currents, Vol. 1 The present book is the first of a short series of Notes intended primarily to assist a student in writing up his lectures; they are of the nature of a full explanatory syllabus of the course of lectures given to Third Year students in the Engineering Laboratory, and are in no wise designed to form a text-book on the subject. In consequence the treatment is necessarily condensed; and further, the limitation of the time available for the course has led to a certain amount of selection in the subjects dealt with; what such omissions should be must always be a matter of opinion. No examples are appended, as these are provided for separately, or can best be composed by the lecturer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Theory of Alternating Currents, Vol. 1 The great progress that has been made in the application of alternating currents to industrial purposes makes it desirable to collect together and examine the mathematical theorems which electricians use in their everyday work. In this volume the more general theorems are collected, and proofs are given of the more important of them, due stress being laid on the assumptions that it is sometimes necessary to make, and on the consequent limitations in the use of the formulae. In the second volume the theory of alternators, motors, transformers, converters, and of the transmission of power by polyphase currents will be given. The reader is supposed to be familiar with the elementary theory of electricity and magnetism, and to have a working knowledge of trigonometry and of the elements of the calculus. A knowledge of De Moivre's theorem, De Moivre's property of the circle and of hyperbolic sines and cosines will be found essential. Lord Kelvin's bei and ber functions given in Chapter XVI will be understood at once from their definitions. The references, given at the end of nearly every chapter, are to the books or papers I have consulted when writing the chapter. In many cases they contain more detailed discussions of the same or similar problems, and will be helpful to the student. The proofs of several of the problems could have been considerably shortened by deducing them from the general equations of electromagnetism, but, in my opinion, the proofs given bring out the physical meaning more clearly to the electrical student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating Currents in Theory and Practice Many students, in fact the majority, desire to take up the study of alternating currents with a very inadequate knowledge of mathematics. In view of this fact, which is to be greatly regretted and which constitutes one of the greatest difficulties of students and teachers alike, the calculus has not been used in the body of the book; it has, however, been used in a few foot notes, mainly with the idea of showing students what excellent examples of the use of elementary calculus are furnished by the subject under consideration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating Currents: Their Theory, Generation, and Transformation IN the following pages an attempt is made to furnish the reader with a general account of the principles, construction, and use of alternate current measuring instruments, generators, motors, and transforming machinery. Special attention is devoted to methods of testing. The first three chapters contain a sketch of alternate-current theory. The author has tried, as far as possible, to exclude everything of purely academic or historical interest; on the other hand, he has not hesitated to devote a good deal of space to matters which are either not generally understood, or which are of too recent origin to have. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating Currents in Theory and Practice Though there are numerous books dealing with the Principles of Alternating Currents, the writer has on many occasions, when recommending a text book to students, found a difficulty in selecting one which, while giving a sufficiently full account of the laws governing the flow of alternating currents in circuits, also includes an account of the several types of alternating current machines. It is hoped that the present book will fill the gap, since, while the fundamental principles of the alternating current circuit are adequately considered, sufficient matter concerning machines and appliances is given to enable readers who have worked through the book to proceed at once to a specialised study of the particular machine or appliance in which they are more immediately interested. Many students, in fact the majority, desire to take up the study of alternating currents with a very inadequate knowledge of mathematics. In view of this fact, which is to be greatly regretted and which constitutes one of the greatest difficulties of students and teachers alike, the calculus has not been used in the body of the book; it has, however, been used in a few footnotes, mainly with the idea of showing students what excellent examples of the use of elementary calculus are furnished by the subject under consideration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Alternating Currents Having been for some years engaged in lecturing to advanced students on the subject of alternating currents the author has endeavoured to present, in as simple a manner as possible, a subject which, though intensely interesting in its purely physical aspect, is often expounded by mathematicians who, while revelling in the mathematical gymnastics afforded by its problems, so bewilder their less mathematical readers by the adoption of unnecessarily ponderous methods that the majority give up in disgust a subject which would otherwise exercise great fascination for them. That such should ever happen is lamentable in the extreme, since it retards the progress of the practical application of alternating currents. The author has employed the method of vector algebra wherever possible to solve the various problems, as he has found that it is quite easy for a student knowing only the elements of algebra and trigonometry to obtain a good working knowledge of the method in a very short time, and become enabled to attack problems which are otherwise beyond his comprehension. The application of vector algebra to alternating-current problems should appeal to everybody. It is a tool peculiarly adapted to the subject, and combines simplicity with all the advantages of a powerful method. No one will dispute the use of a treatise on the subject in which the chief aim of the writer is to eliminate mathematical difficulties and give prominence to the physics of the subject. Since the author has engaged in practice as a consulting engineer he has found that the want of a simple though comprehensive treatise is often a deterrent to practical engineers acquiring a requisite knowledge of the subject.
