Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Different Degrees of the Christian Priesthood The favour we then obtained was through the Bishops' means, and without them I dare confidently assure you, that you will obtain nothing of what you look for. In the be ginning there was no other reformation in the islands than that common throughout the whole kingdom of England. The Priests, who a little before had sung mass, became suddenly Protestants; but yet not one of them was appointed to preach the word of God. They were but ignorant persons, continuing still in heart and affection Papists, and enemies to the Gospel. Now such as were sincerely affected to the Gospel, pre vailed so far as that they obtained Ministers, with whom the Priests could not agree: they retained their service, and the Ministers preached, and had the exercise of Religion asunder, following the order of the Churches. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Melchisedek Priesthood, and the Callings of God: Respectfully Dedicated to a Gospel Ministry In treating of this subject, I shall not govern myself by the Opin'ions kor doctrines of any party or people called orthodox by the professing Christian world; but endeavor to collect such facts from the inspi1 ed records as will tend to instruct the reader on the subject of the priesthood or of a gospel ministry. In the United States, where there 18 free tole1at10n for all religions, we find more sects or parties than 111 any other nation. Each party claims that their doctrines are in accordance with the inspired writings, and that a ministry is one part of their doctrine. Nearly all preachers claim that they are called directly to preach the gospel others that they are called by the church in accordance with a God given order. It is a well known fact that the doctrines of the different sects or parties differ very materially one from the other, enough so to keep up a continued division, and also call themselves, col lectlvely, the body of Christ or his church. The apostle asks, 1 Coin, 1-13, Is Christ divided? We ask every candid, reflecting mind to ask themselves the question Whether it is reasonable to believe that God calls men to preach doctrines diverse one from the other, and thus become the author of all the confusion that is in the world If God does not call them, then are there not mul titudes making false pretentions to their fellow men. The word says, see that thou make all things according to the pattern showed thee in theholy mount, and we shall endeavor in this treatise to show the order of God from the word of inspiration and not from the Opinions and mistakes of men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Treatises on the Christian Priesthood, and on the Dignity of the Episcopal Order, Vol. 1: With a Prefatory Discourse in Answer to a Book Entitled, the Rights of the Christian Church, and an Appendix The first edition of this work was published in one volume 8vo. in 1707. The volume consisted of the Letter to the Author of the Rights, the Prefatory Discourse, the Two Treatises (on the Christian Priesthood, and on the Dignity of the Episcopal Order), and an Appendix containing the first three numbers of the present Appendix, (namely, the Communion Service of King Edward VI.'s first Book, that of the Scottish Prayer-Book of 1637, and the representation of a medal of King Henry VIII.) The Two Treatises, which were originally Letters, as they are often called by the Author, had been written in or soon after the year 1695. The circumstances which led to their composition will be found detailed at the opening of the Prefatory Discourse, pp. 59 - 63 of this volume, and in the notes. They were at first intended only for private perusal. The publication of Tindal's work, The Rights of the Christian Church asserted, in 1706, led Hickes to publish them, with the Discourse in answer to that work prefixed; see p. 67 of this volume. A second edition, with some slight alterations, also in one volume 8vo., came out in the same year, and was issued with a new title-page in 1709. The second edition, whether of 1707 or 1709, is rarely met with. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ministerial Priesthood: Chapters (Preliminary to a Study of the Ordinal) On the Rationale of Ministry and the Meaning of Christian Priesthood I have taken the Opportunity of a fresh issue to modify a sentence on p. Xiii, which seemed to put false emphasis on the word 'details'; I have accepted corrections in the notes on pp. 115, 225; and have added a very few words of further comment on pp. 32, 108, 228. It might possibly be wise to say no more. Yet I am, on the whole, encouraged to try to elucidate a little further the meaning of some positions which have been specially criticized. Book excerpt: This is a graduate textbook on the philosophical and theological aspects of the Priesthood in the Catholic Church. The bishop and their assistants, the priests, participate to different degrees in the priesthood of Jesus Christ. The focus here is more on the priest. There is both the rich and profound theological background to this question as well as the shattering distraction of scandal. The book also treats liturgy, spirituality, the intellectual life and even the life of Saint John Vianney, the Patron of Pastors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of new forms of ministry, lay and ordained, has included worker-priests, now found in the Anglican Communion in a related form variously called Self-Supporting Ministry (SSM) or Non-Stipendiary Ministry (NSM). This book focuses on one of the most recent developments, the creation of Ordained Local Ministry. After chapters that consider preliminary questions of the nature of ministry, such as authority in the church and Holy Orders, Noel Cox argues that the crucial distinction between these and other forms of ministry is that the Ordained Local Minister (OLM) is overtly ordained specifically for a given locality (variously defined); they are a deacon or priest for a specific church, parish, benefice, or deanery, rather than of the universal church. Their introduction inevitably raises difficult ecclesiological questions, which Cox examines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jovinianus, about whom little more is known than what is to be found in Jerome's treatise, published a Latin treatise outlining several opinions: That a virgin is no better, as such, than a wife in the sight of God. Abstinence from food is no better than a thankful partaking of food. A person baptized with the Spirit as well as with water cannot sin. All sins are equal. There is but one grade of punishment and one of reward in the future state. In addition to this, he held the birth of Jesus Christ to have been by a "true parturition," and was thus refuting the orthodoxy of the time, according to which, the infant Jesus passed through the walls of the womb as his Resurrection body afterwards did, out of the tomb or through closed doors.

Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Rather, it is a complete Bible survey course. No one can finish this series of studies and remain unchanged. The reader will receive lifelong benefit and be enriched by these practical and understandable studies. Exposition, commentary, and practical application of the meaning and message of the Bible will be found throughout this giant volume. Bible students without any background in Bible study will find this book of immense help as will those who have spent much time studying the Scriptures, including pastors and teachers. Explore the Book is the result and culmination of a lifetime of dedicated Bible study and exposition on the part of Dr. Baxter. It shows throughout a deep awareness and appreciation of the grand themes of the gospel, as found from the opening book of the Bible through Revelation.
