The arms lately assumed by Cardinal Archbishop Vaughan are Gules, an Archbishops cross in pale or, over all a pall proper. The Archbishop's eminent predecessors, Cardinals Wiseman and Manning, were content to use only their personal arms, and had no idea of assuming a coat, which (since no tinctures are marked on the archi-episcopal seal) appears to the ordinary observer to be a direct annexation of the arms of the archi-episcopal See of Canterbury! It is curious that even the appearance of such a thing should have had the sanction of an officer of the College of Arms.
