Book excerpt: "Man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward;" therefore we all need to learn the same lesson as Paul. "I have learned," he said "in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content," Philippians 4. 11. Believers, especially, wish to attain to a holy equanimity in their tribulations and under the stresses caused by our increasingly secular society. In this volume we have a full exposition, by the Puritan, Thomas Watson, of the above verse of Scripture, originally preached during his ministry as rector of St Stephen's, Wallbrook, London Puritan preachers, having an eye to the practice of their hearers, built their heart-searching application of the truth upon sound biblical doctrine. This characteristic is evident in The Art of Divine Contentment; as is also the fact that Watson was the "master of a terse, vigorous style and of a beauty of expression

And though His definition contains no prescriptions for acquiring cars, homes, or savings, it does require transformation and obedience. MacArthur examines Jesus' timeless definition of happiness, and explains that our reward for following Jesus' plan is citizenship in the kingdom of God- and an abiding joy that can never be taken away. Book excerpt: Simeon Ashe (d. 1662) was an English nonconformist minister of the Gospel and a member of the Westminster Assembly. Edmund Calamy (1600-1666) said of him that Ashe was, ¿a man of great sincerity, humility, benevolence, prudence, and patience: as eminently diligent in preaching the glorious gospel of the grace of God in season and out of season.¿ When he died, it was said that the church had lost a choice pillar and that the city of London had lost an ancient, faithful minister.Ashe wrote this work, Divine Contentment, to demonstrate the Christian¿s duty in being submissive to God¿s providences. This is every Christian¿s holy and gracious duty in this life, and the manner of a Christian is found chiefly in his disposition of being in a holy frame of contentment. Ashe says in opposition to contentment, that ¿discontentment is to the soul, as a disease to the body. It puts it out of temper, and hinders its regular and sublime motions heaven-ward constantly.¿The divines who recommend this work said that it is ¿one of the best works of the kind ever written.¿ Ashe is biblical, penetrating, practical, simple, and spreads the richness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the entire work. He expounds this treatise from the classic verse in Phil. 4:11, ¿I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.¿

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Ruth, often perceived as a heartwarming love story, is much deeper than its brief 85 verses may suggest. Far from just a narrative of an impoverished outcast finding love through the guidance of her mother-in-law, it holds a weighty place in the biblical canon, universally acknowledged, and inspired by the Holy Spirit, for the enrichment of the Church. But could there be more to it? The true brilliance of Ruth lies in its core message. It masterfully illustrates the concept of redemption and how it unfolds through the Kinsman Redeemer. The historical context, with Ruth's pivotal role as a Moabite convert to true faith, further accentuates its significance. Her union with Boaz, a revered figure among his kin, led to the birth of Obed, the grandfather of King David. The narrative was crafted to affirm David's legitimate claim to the throne, emphasizing his divine lineage. Yet, the true essence of the book transcends earthly monarchies, pointing towards King Jesus, the Messiah, our Spiritual David, who emerges as the savior and the ultimate Kinsman. In "Practical Observations on the Book of Ruth", McMahon explores this biblical masterpiece, offering insightful verse-by-verse observations. He presents it as a reflection of Christ's Covenant of Grace, providing a comprehensive commentary on its relevance to the Christian faith and its practical implications for believers in their everyday lives.

Book excerpt: This book is a masterful selection of almost 1000 quotations drawn from a wide range of Puritan works. These quotes have been chosen with great care, and arranged under topical headings from "belief" to "worship". This work forms an ideal introduction to the writings of the godly men of the 17th century, and will prove to be rich devotional reading of the highest caliber. For those being introduced to the writings of the Puritans, or those who are already familiar with them, this devotional work will be a treasure to read again and again. The reading of Puritan works has brought great benefit to the people of God across barriers of culture and time. Christians owe a great debt of gratitude to those faithful theologians, pastors and preachers who continue to speak through their writings even though they have long since entered into their heavenly rest in Christ. In these pages, the reader will find that the Puritans knew how to teach and apply God’s Word in the power of the Holy Spirit, and for the glorification of Jesus Christ, while maintaining a solid biblical orthodoxy needed in our day and age. The purpose of this book is to open a door to the vast stores of biblical treasure and wisdom to be found in the writings of the Puritans and that it will stimulate further reading from our Reformed and spiritual heritage. Authors cited include: Nathaniel Vincent, George Walker, Francis Whiddon, William Perkins, Christopher Love, Thomas Hooker, Jeremiah Burroughs, Thomas Case, Jonathan Edwards, Matthew Mead, John Owen, Richard Sibbes, Samuel Ward, Thomas Watson, Thomas Mocket, Ephraim Pagitt, Edmund Calamy, John Arrowsmith, Cuthbert Sydenham, John Beart, Richard Rawlin, Nicholas Byfield, and dozens more. If not, it will be because that one would not follow the very clear and simple instructions given. The teaching is from the Bible, yet it must be described as unique. Nowhere else will you find such unusual, but Biblically authenticated thoughts: He will teach you that contentment lies in subtraction, not in addition; that the ABC's of Christianity are nothing like what you thought them to be; that there is a mystery of contentment, but that once you have learned the way from Christ's word, you will be able to attain such a depth of contentment as you never before dreamed existed. This is a key book for building up Christian maturity. Christian Contentment, what is it? ''It is a sweet, inward heart thing. It is a work of the Spirit indoors. It is a box of precious ointment, very comforting and useful for troubled hearts in times of troubled conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Smith argues that Christianity is the only true religion. This particular book was one of Smith’s most popular works, and went through dozens of editions and reprints during his lifetime (his sermons in general had gone through eighty–five editions by 1620). "God’s Arrow" focuses on utterly destroying paganism (the atheism of the natural man), Islam (the religion of carnality) and Roman Catholicism (the religion of the deceived, apostate and Antichristian establishment posing as God’s authority in the world), with an exhortation to unite Christ’s church in the truth rather than divide it. Smith’s arguments are lucid and biblically powerful, and a sanctifying treat to the Christian’s mind and soul. He quickly demonstrates the absurdity of that which is “not the true religion” of Jesus Christ and concretely sets down the right religion contained in Holy Scripture. This is a classic work that should not be missed! This is not a scan or facsimile, and contains an active table of contents for electronic versions.

By being equipped to answer questions about suffering and evil, Christians can persevere in faith, share their faith, and defend the faith when confronted with these inevitable challenges of living in a fallen world. In 40 Questions About Suffering and Evil, Greg Welty shows the necessity of exploring our vocabulary around evil and suffering so we can clearly see and express the best questions. Welty explores vital ideas, backgrounds, and issues, answering questions like these: - What is the difference between moral Evil and natural Evil? - What is the Bible's role in helping us understand suffering and evil? - Does God will all suffering and evil? - How is the gospel relevant to counseling those who suffer? Welty provides biblically informed intellectual resources for answering significant questions about suffering and evil, exposing readers to a wide range of influential views articulated by Christians over the past two millennia.
