Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For three centuries the treatise De plantis has been poorly represented by a Byzantine Greek translation of a mediocre Latin version made from the Arabic, which in its turn came from a Syriac rendering of the lost original. Since this Byzantine version was four times removed from the Greek exemplar, its authority was, to say the least, questionable. However, it was printed in 1539, and in spite of ubiquitous disapproval found its way into all subsequent editions of the Corpus Aristotelicum. In the present book the fragments of the Syriac version and the text of the four other translations (Arabic, Latin, Greek, Hebrew) are edited afresh. As far as possible, the manuscriptal evidence is complete, and each text is provided with an introduction and copious notes concerning philological problems. A few of the numerous commentaries are added and the vexed question of whether Averroes had written a commentary on De plantis is treated at some length.

This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Translation of the following Work was undertaken at the request of Mr. Ruff, the Publisher, who wished me to paraphrase what I thought might more particularly interest and edify the English reader. It is dedicated, by the Publisher, to her Grace the Duchess of Bedford—and he is anxious that it may be found worthy of her patronage. The original French work was first published in 1688; and the earliest English translation appeared in 1707. This translation, which was by Dr. Hickes, I have never seen. In the year 1797, another [anonymous] English translation was printed at Hull, in a duodecimo volume. In this performance there is so close an adherence to the idiom of the French language, that almost every page abounds with gallicisms. It is not, however, entirely destitute of merit; but it appears, on the whole, to have been hastily executed for the purpose of ensuring a cheap and extensive sale. The present translation is offered to the public, with a full conviction of its inadequacy to give a just idea of the beauty and force of the original. The author of "Telemaque" and "De l'Education des Filles" appears, on a comparison of these two performances, very unlike the same writer. In the former, his periods are flowing and luxuriant; in the latter, they are sententious and logical; and nearly as difficult to clothe in an English-dress as those of the philosophical Tacitus. It will be seen, therefore, that a literal translation has not been attempted; and a still greater deviation will be observable, from a wish to distinguish it from the translation of 1797. Whether this has always been done for the better, the reader will determine for himself. The Original Chapter "on religious studies" has been submitted to those, whose opinions, matured by experience, I have been anxious to obtain; and it has received the sanction of their approbation. If the Work fail of success, it will not be from the want of spirit in the Publisher; for it is accompanied with considerable beauty of type and paper, and elegance of ornament. The design is every way worthy of the ingenious artist by whom it was executed, and who has long been known to the world from the taste and fidelity of his pencil. The engraving, by Mr. Freeman, will convince the public that he requires only to be known, to be more generally encouraged.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aristotle's Treatise on Poetry, Translated: With Notes on the Translation, and on the Original; And Two Dissertations, on Poetical, and Musical, Imitation It would be doing injuf'tice to the'tranflation lately given to the public by Mr. Pye; to place it, ' in any view, however favour able, by the tide of thefe'. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruusbroec is one of the few medieval writers whose work has been read, translated, and commented upon throughout the ages until today. One of the most translated writers in Dutch literature, Ruusbroec brings the literature of the Low Countries onto the world stage. Ruusbroec's genius is paradoxical. His stylistic devices are simple, but his wording flawless. He describes concrete details of daily life, but also seeks to evoke how the everyday participates in spiritual love and the Holy Trinity. He loves the Church, but his criticism of its corruption anticipates Savonarola. He praises secluded life, but also emphasises the universality of such life whereby the true contemplative is a 'common' person. This set of two volumes includes the complete text of all of Ruusbroec's works - the original Middle Dutch version as well as a new English translation - as published in Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaevalis, volumes 101 to 110. The edition is preceded by a short Introduction describing Ruusbroec's life and doctrine and summarising the dating and context of the various treatises and letters, and is followed by a source apparatus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Theories of Translation In the following pages I have attempted to trace certain developments in the theory of translation as it has been formulated by English writers. I have confined myself, of necessity, to such opinions as have been put into words, and avoided making use of deductions from practice other than a few obvious and generally accepted conclusions. The procedure involves, of course, the omission of some important elements in the history of the theory of translation, in that it ignores the discrepancies between precept and practice, and the influence which practice has exerted upon theory; on the other hand, however, it confines a subject, otherwise impossibly large, within measurable limits. The chief emphasis has been laid upon the sixteenth century, the period of the most enthusiastic experimentation, when, though it was still possible for the translator to rest in the comfortable medieval conception of his art, the New Learning was offering new problems and new ideals to every man who shared in the intellectual awakening of his time. In the matter of theory, however, the age was one of beginnings, of suggestions, rather than of finished, definitive results; even by the end of the century there were still translators who had not yet appreciated the immense difference between medieval and modern standards of translation. To understand their position, then, it is necessary to consider both the preceding period, with its incidental, half-unconscious comment, and the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with their systematized, unified contribution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Translation and Translations: Theory and Practice For fifty years in various capacities I have had to concern myself with Translation. In the hope that what I had done and suffered might be made of use to other workers in this field I resolved to give the results of a part of my efforts to the world, prefaced by a brief statement of the principles and methods to which, consciously or unconsciously, my practice had adhered. This I soon discovered could not be fitly presented without reference to the work of my predecessors, and the statement has changed to something like a treatise. That such a handling of the subject was not entirely superfluous may be seen not merely from its own importance which, educational literary and international, was never greater than at present, but from the confusion and uncertainty which have embarrassed it for so long. I have dealt chiefly, but by no means exclusively, with the two foreign languages in which I am most at home. This need not be deemed a disadvantage. The problems of translation from a modern language have everywhere their analogues in translation from an ancient one, whereas there are many affecting the latter to which the former shows nothing to correspond. While on this side I have limited myself, on another I have taken my inquiry beyond what of late has been usual. Book excerpt: Provides a comprehensive inventory of all English translations of the 'Consolatio' of Boethius and supplies basic information on the salient features that interested readers will need in initial phases of research on the large and complex English translation tradition. This volume is a reference work, organized chronologically in its sections, with a separate entry for each translator's work. The sections are defined by the type of translations they comprise, whether complete, partial, meters only, etc. The plan of the book is encyclopedic in nature: some biographical material is provided for each translator; the translations are described briefly, as are their linguistic peculiarities, their implied audiences, their links with other translations, and their general reception. Sample passages from the translations are provided, and where possible these are two of the most well-known moments in the 'Consolatio': the appearance of Lady Philosophy, narrated by the Prisoner, and the cosmological hymn to the 'Deus' of the work, sung by Lady Philosophy.
