Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Heart of Torah, Rabbi Shai Held s Torah essays two for each weekly portion open new horizons in Jewish biblical commentary. Held probes the portions in bold, original, and provocative ways. He mines Talmud and midrashim, great writers of world literature, and astute commentators of other religious backgrounds to ponder fundamental questions about God, human nature, and what it means to be a religious person in the modern world. Along the way, he illuminates the centrality of empathy in Jewish ethics, the predominance of divine love in Jewish theology, the primacy of gratitude and generosity, and God s summoning of each of us with all our limitations into the dignity of a covenantal relationship.
Book Synopsis Abraham Joshua Heschel and the Sources of Wonder by : Michael Marmur
Download or read book Abraham Joshua Heschel and the Sources of Wonder written by Michael Marmur and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907–1972) was one of the twentieth century’s most influential Jewish thinkers, a respected theologian and enthusiastic civil rights activist who marched to Selma with Martin Luther King, Jr. His theology emphasized the immediacy of wonder and awe, yet his writing was studded with signs of his vast knowledge of traditional scholarship. No other Jewish thinker of note in the twentieth century used such a wide range of texts so extensively. Abraham Joshua Heschel and the Sources of Wonder is the first book to demonstrate how Heschel’s political, intellectual, and spiritual commitments were embedded in his reading of Jewish tradition. By shedding new light on how Heschel’s theological project reconciled the demands of tradition and the modern world, Michael Marmur offers an inspirational lesson in how contemporary Jewish thought can embrace both the texts of the past and the challenges of the present.

Book Synopsis Abraham Joshua Heschel by : Stanisław Krajewski
Download or read book Abraham Joshua Heschel written by Stanisław Krajewski and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to the thought of one of the 20th century's most interesting philosophers of religion. Heschel, a traditional Polish Jew who became a modern thinker, was also an impressive prophet of interreligious dialogue. The book is the fruit of a scholarly conference held in 2007 at the University of Warsaw, in Heschel's native city, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth. Given the depth and scope of his thinking, the papers gathered in the volume will be of interest not only to philosophers, theologians, and scholars of Heschel, but also to those who know little about Heschel but are interested in the fundamental problems that appear at the borders between philosophy and theology, religion and modernity, Judaism and Christianity, and, more broadly, problems of interfaith relations and their future. Among the contributors to the volume there are many of the foremost Heschel scholars from the United States and Israel, as well as authors from Poland and other European countries. The authors believe that the infl uence of Heschel will continue to grow worldwide.

Book Synopsis Peshat and Derash by : David Weiss Halivni
Download or read book Peshat and Derash written by David Weiss Halivni and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-09-03 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the days of Plato, the problem of the efficacy and adequacy of the written word as a vehicle of human communication has challenged mankind, yet the mystery of how best to achieve clarity and exactitude of written expression has never been solved. The most repercussive instance of this universal problem has been the exegesis of the law embodied in Hebrew scripture. Peshat and Derash is the first book to trace the Jewish interpretative enterprise from a historical perspective. Applying his vast knowledge of Rabbinic materials to the long history of Jewish exegesis of both Bible and Talmud, Halivni investigates the tension that has often existed between the plain sense of the divine text (peshat) and its creative, Rabbinic interpretations (derash). Halivni addresses the theological implications of the deviation of derash from peshat and explores the differences between the ideological extreme of the religious right, which denies that Judaism has a history, and the religious left, which claims that history is all that Judaism has. A comprehensive and critical narration of the history and repercussions of Rabbinic exegesis, this analysis will interest students of legal texts, hermeneutics, and scriptural traditions, as well as anyone involved in Jewish studies.
Book Synopsis The Heart of the Matter by : Arthur Green
Download or read book The Heart of the Matter written by Arthur Green and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Judaism, like all the great religions, has a strand within it that sees inward devotion as an opening of the human heart to God's presence. This voice is not always easy to hear in a tradition where so much attention is devoted to the how rather than the why of religious living. The devotional claim, certainly a key part of Judaism's biblical heritage, has reasserted itself in the teachings of individual mystics and in the emergence of religious movements over the long course of Jewish history. This volume represents Rabbi Arthur Green's own quest for such a Judaism, both as a scholar and as a contemporary seeker. This collection of essays brings together Green's scholarly writings, centered on the history of early Hasidism, and his highly personal approach to a rebirth of Jewish spirituality in our own day. In choosing to present them in this way, he asserts a claim that they are all of a piece. They represent one man's attempt to wade through history and text, language and symbol, an array of voices both past and present, while always focusing on the essential question "What does it mean to be a religious human being, and what does Judaism teach us about it?" This, the author considers to be the heart of the matter." -- Publisher's description.

Download or read book Keter written by Arthur Green and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keter is a close reading of fifty relatively brief Jewish texts, tracing the motif of divine coronation from Jewish esoteric writings of late antiquity to the Zohar, written in thirteenth-century Spain. In the course of this investigation Arthur Green draws a wide arc including Talmudic, Midrashic, liturgical, Merkavah, German Hasidic, and Kabbalistic works, showing through this single theme the spectrum of devotional, mystical, and magical views held by various circles of Jews over the course of a millennium or more. The first portion of the work deals with late antiquity, emphasizing the close relationship between texts of what is often depicted as "normative" Judaism and their mystical/magical analogues. The mythic imagination of ancient Judaism, he suggests, is shared across this spectrum. The latter portion of the work turns to the medieval Jews who inherited this ancient tradition and its evolution into Kabbalah, where keter plays a key role as the first of the ten divine emanations or sefirot. The nature of these sefirot as symbols and the emergence of a structured and hierarchical symbolism out of the mythic imagery of the past are key themes in these later chapters. As a whole, Keter takes the reader on an exciting tour of the interior landscapes of the Jewish imagination, offering some remarkable insights into the nature of mystical and symbolic thinking in the Jewish tradition. Book Synopsis Destination Torah by : I. S. D. Sassoon
Download or read book Destination Torah written by I. S. D. Sassoon and published by KTAV Publishing House, Inc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book pursues a "close reading" of the biblical verses that it has chosen for reflection and of selected rabbinic sources that relate to these verses. Whereas some commentaries feel it a virtue to impose agreement between divergent traditions, the aim of Destination Torah is to allow each precious text to impart its own message. At the book's heart is the biblical revelation as a coherent whole, setting out to replace an older mythological perception of ourselves and our physical and spiritual world with its Torah view. That view is Destination Torah's quest.
Book Synopsis Jewish Theology Unbound by : James A. Diamond
Download or read book Jewish Theology Unbound written by James A. Diamond and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-28 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jewish Theology Unbound challenges the widespread misinterpretation of Judaism as a religion of law as opposed to theology. James A. Diamond provides close readings of the Bible, classical rabbinic texts, Jewish philosophers, and mystics from the ancient, medieval, and modern period, which communicate a profound Jewish philosophical theology on human nature, God, and the relationship between the two. The study begins with an examination of questioning in the Hebrew Bible, demonstrating that what the Bible encourages is independent philosophical inquiry into how to situate oneself in the world ethically, spiritually, and teleologically. It explores such themes as the nature of God through the various names by which God is known in the Jewish intellectual tradition, love of others and of God, death, martyrdom, freedom, angels, the philosophical quest, the Holocaust, and the state of Israel, all in light of the Hebrew Bible and the way it is filtered through the rabbinic, philosophical, and mystical traditions.
