Book excerpt: Covers the theory and applications of using weak form theory in incompressible fluid-thermal sciences Giving you a solid foundation on the Galerkin finite-element method (FEM), this book promotes the use of optimal modified continuous Galerkin weak form theory to generate discrete approximate solutions to incompressible-thermal Navier-Stokes equations. The book covers the topic comprehensively by introducing formulations, theory and implementation of FEM and various flow formulations. The author first introduces concepts, terminology and methodology related to the topic before covering topics including aerodynamics; the Navier-Stokes Equations; vector field theory implementations and large eddy simulation formulations. Introduces and addresses many different flow models (Navier-Stokes, full-potential, potential, compressible/incompressible) from a unified perspective Focuses on Galerkin methods for CFD beneficial for engineering graduate students and engineering professionals Accompanied by a website with sample applications of the algorithms and example problems and solutions This approach is useful for graduate students in various engineering fields and as well as professional engineers.

Book excerpt: The Twenty-Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics was held in Washington, D.C., from August 9-14, 1998. It coincided with the 100th anniversary of the David Taylor Model Basin. This international symposium was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research (Mechanics and Energy Conversion S&T Division), the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (David Taylor Model Basin). This biennial symposium promotes the technical exchange of naval research developments of common interest to all the countries of the world. The forum encourages both formal and informal discussion of the presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers.

A triennial international conference jointly promoted by Control.Data, GRS and SCS, which takes place at Schliersee, a small town near the Alps. The aim of the Symposium is to cover most of the aspects of nuclear modelling and simulation in theory and practice, to promote the exchange of knowledge and experience between different international research groups in this field, and to strengthen the international contact between developers and users of modelling and simulation techniques. On the occasion of the Symposium people of scientific and engineering disciplines will meet to discuss the state-of-the-art and future activities and developments. A large number of contributed papers has been strictly examined and selected by the papers committee to guarantee a high international standard. The book contains the accepted papers which will be presented at the Symposium. The papers have been classified according to the following topics: 1. HARDWARE TOOLS 2. SIMULATION-SOFTWARE-TOOLS 3. PLANT ANALYSER 4. REACTOR CORE 5. NUCLEAR WASTE Authors from 9 countries will meet at the Symposium. They work for Industrial Companies, Universities and the Research and Development Institutes so that a broad spectrum of simulation activities is covered: Theory and application, hardware and software, research and operations. The editor is greatful to the authors for making possible the publication of this book, and especially to WOLFGANG F. WERNEB, for the selection of the papers and the contribution to the success of the Symposium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited review book on Godunov methods contains 97 articles, all of which were presented at the international conference on Godunov Methods: Theory and Applications, held at Oxford, in October 1999, to commemorate the 70th birthday of the Russian mathematician Sergei K. Godunov. The central theme of this book is numerical methods for hyperbolic conservation laws following Godunov's key ideas contained in his celebrated paper of 1959. Hyperbolic conservation laws play a central role in mathematical modelling in several distinct disciplines of science and technology. Application areas include compressible, single (and multiple) fluid dynamics, shock waves, meteorology, elasticity, magnetohydrodynamics, relativity, and many others. The successes in the design and application of new and improved numerical methods of the Godunov type for hyperbolic conservation laws in the last twenty years have made a dramatic impact in these application areas. The 97 papers cover a very wide range of topics, such as design and analysis of numerical schemes, applications to compressible and incompressible fluid dynamics, multi-phase flows, combustion problems, astrophysics, environmental fluid dynamics, and detonation waves. This book will be a reference book on the subject of numerical methods for hyperbolic partial differential equations for many years to come. All contributions are self-contained but do contain a review element. There is a key paper by Peter Sweby in which a general overview of Godunov methods is given. This contribution is particularly suitable for beginners on the subject. This book is unique: it contains virtually everything concerned with Godunov-type methods for conservation laws. As such it will be of particular interest to academics (applied mathematicians, numerical analysts, engineers, environmental scientists, physicists, and astrophysicists) involved in research on numerical methods for partial differential equations; scientists and engineers concerned with new numerical methods and applications to scientific and engineering problems e.g., mechanical engineers, aeronautical engineers, meteorologists; and academics involved in teaching numerical methods for partial differential equations at the postgraduate level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the fundamental concepts required for the development of an efficient small-scale wind turbine. For centuries, engineers and scientists have used wind turbines of all shapes and sizes to harvest wind energy. Large-scale wind turbines have been successful at producing great amounts of power when deployed in sites with vast, open space, such as in fi elds or in offshore waters. For environments with limited space, such as dense urban environments, small-scale wind turbines are an attractive alternative for taking advantage of the ubiquity of wind. However, many of today’s tools for aerodynamic design and analysis were originally developed for large-scale turbines and do not scale down to these smaller devices. Arranged in a systematic and comprehensive manner, complete with supporting examples, Wind Energy Harvesting: Micro- To Small-Scale Turbines is a useful reference for undergraduate and graduate level classes on energy harvesting, sustainable energy, and fl uid dynamics, and an introduction to the field for non-technical readers.
