Book excerpt: The acclaimed author of Einstein’s Dreams tackles "big questions like the origin of the universe and the nature of consciousness ... in an entertaining and easily digestible way” (Wall Street Journal) with a collection of meditative essays on the possibilities—and impossibilities—of nothingness and infinity, and how our place in the cosmos falls somewhere in between. Can space be divided into smaller and smaller units, ad infinitum? Does space extend to larger and larger regions, on and on to infinity? Is consciousness reducible to the material brain and its neurons? What was the origin of life, and can biologists create life from scratch in the lab? Physicist and novelist Alan Lightman, whom The Washington Post has called “the poet laureate of science writers,” explores these questions and more—from the anatomy of a smile to the capriciousness of memory to the specialness of life in the universe to what came before the Big Bang. Probable Impossibilities is a deeply engaged consideration of what we know of the universe, of life and the mind, and of things vastly larger and smaller than ourselves.

Book excerpt: Built from the debris of exploding stars that floated through space for billions of years, home to a zoo of tiny aliens, and controlled by a brain with more possible connections than there are atoms in the universe, the human body is the most incredible thing in existence. In the sequel to his bestselling Inflight Science, Brian Clegg explores mitochondria, in-cell powerhouses which are thought to have once been separate creatures; how your eyes are quantum traps, consuming photons of light from the night sky that have travelled for millions of years; your many senses, which include the ability to detect warps in space and time, and why meeting an attractive person can turn you into a gibbering idiot. Read THE UNIVERSE INSIDE YOU and you'll never look at yourself the same way again.

Book excerpt: Weaving Germanic Paganism with mysticism, magic, and his background as a transpersonal therapist, Matthew Ash McKernan introduces you to wyrd, a mysterious web of being that connects everything. Wyrd encompasses all organisms, ecosystems, matter, phenomena, purposes, and possibilities. It is destiny, nature, soul, magic, and mystery intertwined. In Wyrdcraft, McKernan guides you through a process of attuning to wyrd as it manifests within all the domains of your life, teaching you how to sense and intuit the ways of wyrd more clearly than ever before. Exploring the intersections of psychotherapy, ecotherapy, Heathenry, and magic, this contemplative and experiential book offers nearly fifty exercises to help you cultivate wyrd consciousness—an awareness that is naturally revealing, healing, transformative, and becoming. Becoming what, you may ask? You will see as you align with the wisdom of wyrd, heal yourself and our interconnected world, and remember the nature of your Higher Self.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engages readers with its original philosophical and pragmatic analysis of traditional Asian religions, philosophy, meditation practice, and the supreme spiritual ideals associated with the Hindu, Buddhist, and Taoist traditions. The text boldly bridges the theory/practice distinction. A central underpinning rests on the assumption that meditation practice without theory is groundless and that theory without practice is useless. Identifies and analyzes common elements found across traditions in which the practice of meditation plays a central role in human development, and readers will find a wealth of detailed reflection on the relationship between spiritual growth and meditation practice from the Hindu, Buddhist, and Taoist perspectives. The book describes what causes them to occur and how they can be induced. Our sensors (eyes, ears, nose, skin, taste buds) contain us in the three-dimensional present, or space. When we are in the present, we can experience time as it flows through us but we cannot move through time like we can move through space. In order to move through time, we must shut off our sensors. Doing so frees us from the confines of space and we find ourselves in imaginary time, or the future, where OBEs occur. OBEs are called "inside events" because they don't require outside stimuli from our sensors. We have to turn off our sensors to begin an OBE and one or more of our sensors turning back on can end an OBE, but there are no sensors involved while we are having an OBE. This book is also about "outside events". Outside events allow us to create the future. Outside events are not OBEs. We begin an outside event the same way we begin an inside event OBE: by shutting off our sensors. We deposit the brainwaves of the event we want to experience by visualizing or imagining the event while we are in the future. Time only moves in one direction: from the future to the present. After we deposit the brainwaves in the future, the "time escalator" brings the event to the present where we experience it. All participants in a specific future event are able to deposit their brainwaves on the time escalator by visualizing their desired outcomes for the event. The brainwaves of the various participants who have deposited brainwaves describing their desired outcomes for the event then combine either destructively (cancel each other out) or constructively (reinforce each other). The event that finally arrives in the present will represent the combination of all the participants' brainwaves. Unlike inside events, outside events involve our sensors which we need to perceive the events when they arrive in the present from the future on the time escalator.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexuality and Gender at Home is the first book to explore the meanings and experiences of home through the framework of sexuality. Looking at a broad spectrum of sexuality, gender and domesticity, it examines the many ways in which home is constructed, performed and experienced in relation to sexuality and gender. Considering identity issues such as age, class, ethnicity and gender, the authors problematize intimacy and question conventional ways of thinking about allegedly 'private' home space. Comprehensive introductions to each of the book's three sections – on Intimacy and Home, Queering Home, Beyond Home – provide a coherent overview of the existing literature as well as additional historical and cultural context. Fourteen chapters present ground-breaking research and insights into sexuality, gender and home across culture, time and space. Written by academics from a range of subject disciplines, chapters are based on research covering countries including Australia, France, Sweden, the UK, the USA, Guyana, Israel, and Singapore. This highly original text is the ideal starting point for anyone wishing to get to grips with the emerging field of sexuality, gender and home and will particularly appeal to researchers and students in anthropology, architecture, gender studies, sociology, and human geography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Faces of Your Soul, Elise Dirlam Ching and Kaleo Ching combine art and archetypes, meditation and acupressure, guided imagery, journaling, and many different creative processes in a collage of healing knowledge and wisdom. The authors start by stressing the balance of complementary opposites—left brain/right brain, challenge/comfort, practicality/the sacred—as crucial to beginning the journey. Then through guided imagery, they lead readers through subconscious realms to connect with archetypal sources of inner wisdom. This process frees the creative and healing spirit, connecting explorers with the body's instinctive intelligence, which expresses itself through the creation of art. Central to this process is a detailed description of maskmaking—including how to work with a partner to mold each other's gauze mask—balanced with self-explorations of the inner experience of this event. Poetry, personal stories, photographs, and a gallery of Kaleo Ching's evocative totemic masks expand the reader's experience of this richly resonant journey to self.
