Book excerpt: The energy change (DeltaH) was determined for cation exchange in montmorillonite clay using solution calorimetry to quantify accepted qualitative trends of cation exchange. Five clays were obtained from the Source Clays Repository and included SA̳z̳−1, SC̳a̳−3, SHCa−1, ST̳x̳−1, and SW̳y̳−2. All clays were exchanged with sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, aluminum, and iron. Each heat exchange was measured in calories per gram (cal/g) and average values were determined. The energy change was plotted against known cation exchange capacities (CEC) for each type of clay. Based on these trends, a linear relationship between cation exchange capacity and energy was expected. However, only the potassium clay showed any linearity. Unusual behavior resulted from all other cations and led to consideration of charge origination, solvation properties, pH, surface area, and entropy in order to improve understanding of exchange processes.

Book excerpt: Clay and clay minerals have always been used since the ancient times for making ceramic materials and also as a building material. Over the past decades, there has been a growing trend in their applicability in different areas such as industries, environmental remediation and water treatment sectors. The growing trend is mainly associated with the fact that they are chemically and mechanically stable, have higher specific surface area and cation exchange capacity. Furthermore, clays can be modified to improve their functionalities in different sectors. In this chapter, we present a review of the structural, mineralogical and chemical properties of clay and the effect of surface modification in their structures. We further looked at their applicability in arsenic and fluoride removal in their raw and also in their modified form. Although the literature showed that modified clay minerals yields higher adsorption capacity as compared to raw clays little nothing has been reported yet in relation to the cost of modifying clays with chemical species. As such new studies should also elaborate on the cost effectiveness of modifying clay minerals with chemical species.

Accordingly, shale is defined and described from both an engineering and geological point of view. Elasticity and poroelasticity concepts, shale’s response to temperature changes, and finally chemical properties of shale and the impact thereof on the rock’s behavior are discussed in detail. In addressing the engineering aspects and parameters related to chemical, mechanical and thermal properties and integrating them into engineering models that can be applied in deep engineering projects, mining and other civil works, this book will serve as a reference to model designers and engineers working with shale in the petroleum industry and elsewhere.
