Book excerpt: Gilboa and Schmeidler provide a new paradigm for modelling decision making under uncertainty, one which suggests that people make decisions by analogies to past cases. The authors describe the general theory and its relationship to planning, repeated choice problems, inductive inference, and learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Better Decisions introduces readers to some of the principal aspects of decision theory, and examines how these might lead us to make better decisions. Introduces readers to key aspects of decision theory and examines how they might help us make better decisions Presentation of material encourages readers to imagine a situation and make a decision or a judgment Offers a broad coverage of the subject including major insights from several sub-disciplines: microeconomic theory, decision theory, game theory, social choice, statistics, psychology, and philosophy Explains these insights informally in a language that has minimal mathematical notation or jargon, even when describing and interpreting mathematical theorems Critically assesses the theory presented within the text, as well as some of its critiques Includes a web resource for teachers and students

Book Synopsis Uncertain Decisions by : Luigi Luini
Download or read book Uncertain Decisions written by Luigi Luini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncertain Decisions: Bridging Theory and Experiments presents advanced directions of thinking on decision theory - in particular the more recent contributions on non-expected utility theory, fuzzy decision theory and case-based theory. This work also provides theoretical insights on measures of risk aversion and on new problems for general equilibrium analysis. It analyzes how the thinking that underlies the theories described above spills over into real decisions, and how the thinking that underlies these real decisions can explain the discrepancies between theoretical approaches and actual behavior. This work elaborates on how the most recent laboratory experiments have become an important source both for evaluating the leading theory of choice and decision, and for contributing to the formation of new models regarding the subject.

Download or read book An Experiment on Case-Based Decision Making written by Brit Grosskopf and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We experimentally investigate the disposition of decision makers to use case-based reasoning as suggested by Case-Based Decision Theory (Gilboa and Schmeidler, 1995). Our subjects face a monopoly decision problem about which they have very limited information. Information is presented in a manner which makes similarity judgements according to the feature matching model of Tversky (1977) very plausible. In a 2x2 between-subject design, we vary whether information about the current market is given, in addition to a history, or not. Furthermore, we investigate the impact feedback has on behavior in several independent markets by either giving immediate feedback about obtained profits or not. The results provide some support for the predictions of Case-Based Decision Theory, particularly when no immediate feedback is given. We also find evidence that other simple heuristics are used.

Book Synopsis Case-Based Decision Theory and Financial Markets by :
Download or read book Case-Based Decision Theory and Financial Markets written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dissertation applies the case-based decision theory proposed by Gilboa and Schmeidler (1995) to financial markets. It considers both an individual portfolio choice problem, and interaction of case-based investors in a market environment. It is shown that case-based decisions can explain empirically observed phenomena such as predictability of returns, excessive volatility, bubbles and high frequency of trades. Moreover, it can be shown that case-based investors can survive in the presence of expected utility maximizers in the market and can influence asset prices.
Book Synopsis Theory of Decision Under Uncertainty by : Itzhak Gilboa
Download or read book Theory of Decision Under Uncertainty written by Itzhak Gilboa and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-16 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the classical axiomatic theories of decision under uncertainty, as well as critiques thereof and alternative theories. It focuses on the meaning of probability, discussing some definitions and surveying their scope of applicability. The behavioral definition of subjective probability serves as a way to present the classical theories, culminating in Savage's theorem. The limitations of this result as a definition of probability lead to two directions - first, similar behavioral definitions of more general theories, such as non-additive probabilities and multiple priors, and second, cognitive derivations based on case-based techniques.

Book Synopsis Goal-based Decision Making by : Stephen Slade
Download or read book Goal-based Decision Making written by Stephen Slade and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a goal-based model of decision making in which the relative priorities of goals drive the decision process -- a psychological alternative to traditional decision analysis. Building on the work of Schank and Abelson, the author uses goals as the basis for a model of interpersonal relations which permits decisions to incorporate personal and adopted goals in a uniform manner. The theory is modelled on the VOTE computer program which simulates Congressional roll-call voting decisions. The VOTE program expands traditional decision making and simulation models by providing not only a choice, but also a natural language explanation, in either English or French. It simulates real members of Congress voting on real bills, and producing reasonable explanations. The program is consistent with much of the descriptive political science literature on Congressional decision making and provides an explicit model of political issues, relationships, and strategies that converge in voting behavior. In developing the VOTE program, the author draws on his own practical experience in politics from four presidential campaigns and the White House. Given the underlying psychological basis of the program, VOTE can be extended to other decision making domains different from politics. Another use for the program is to simulate business decisions such as securities analysis, as well as mundane decision making such as choosing a college or deciding whether to get a Mohawk haircut.
