Book Synopsis Theory-Based Data Analysis for the Social Sciences by : Carol S. Aneshensel
Download or read book Theory-Based Data Analysis for the Social Sciences written by Carol S. Aneshensel and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2013 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the elaboration model for the multivariate analysis of observational quantitative data. This model entails the systematic introduction of "third variables" to the analysis of a focal relationship between one independent and one dependent variable to ascertain whether an inference of causality is justified. Two complementary strategies are used: an exclusionary strategy that rules out alternative explanations such as spuriousness and redundancy with competing theories, and an inclusive strategy that connects the focal relationship to a network of other relationships, including the hypothesized causal mechanisms linking the focal independent variable to the focal dependent variable. The primary emphasis is on the translation of theory into a logical analytic strategy and the interpretation of results. The elaboration model is applied with case studies drawn from newly published research that serve as prototypes for aligning theory and the data analytic plan used to test it; these studies are drawn from a wide range of substantive topics in the social sciences, such as emotion management in the workplace, subjective age identification during the transition to adulthood, and the relationship between religious and paranormal beliefs. The second application of the elaboration model is in the form of original data analysis presented in two Analysis Journals that are integrated throughout the text and implement the full elaboration model. Using real data, not contrived examples, the text provides a step-by-step guide through the process of integrating theory with data analysis in order to arrive at meaningful answers to research questions.

Book Synopsis Statistical Analysis of Designed Experiments by : Ajit C. Tamhane
Download or read book Statistical Analysis of Designed Experiments written by Ajit C. Tamhane and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-09-12 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A indispensable guide to understanding and designing modern experiments The tools and techniques of Design of Experiments (DOE) allow researchers to successfully collect, analyze, and interpret data across a wide array of disciplines. Statistical Analysis of Designed Experiments provides a modern and balanced treatment of DOE methodology with thorough coverage of the underlying theory and standard designs of experiments, guiding the reader through applications to research in various fields such as engineering, medicine, business, and the social sciences. The book supplies a foundation for the subject, beginning with basic concepts of DOE and a review of elementary normal theory statistical methods. Subsequent chapters present a uniform, model-based approach to DOE. Each design is presented in a comprehensive format and is accompanied by a motivating example, discussion of the applicability of the design, and a model for its analysis using statistical methods such as graphical plots, analysis of variance (ANOVA), confidence intervals, and hypothesis tests. Numerous theoretical and applied exercises are provided in each chapter, and answers to selected exercises are included at the end of the book. An appendix features three case studies that illustrate the challenges often encountered in real-world experiments, such as randomization, unbalanced data, and outliers. Minitab® software is used to perform analyses throughout the book, and an accompanying FTP site houses additional exercises and data sets. With its breadth of real-world examples and accessible treatment of both theory and applications, Statistical Analysis of Designed Experiments is a valuable book for experimental design courses at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also an indispensable reference for practicing statisticians, engineers, and scientists who would like to further their knowledge of DOE.
Book Synopsis Defensive Expectations by : Liviu Voinea
Download or read book Defensive Expectations written by Liviu Voinea and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-09 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains why inflation remains subdued after recessions, based on three revolutionary concepts: defensive expectations, compensatory savings, and cumulative wage gap. When income falls, consumption falls, and savings rise, as people rebuild their past wealth. Households will not spend more until they fully recover what they lost. The revised Phillips Curve explains that current inflation depends on the cumulative difference between current income and past income. This new theory is tested and validated by data for US since 1960 to date and for 35 OECD countries from 1990 to date. A number of policy implications are derived from these results. The book calls for an optimal policy mix between monetary policy and fiscal policy; it also discusses the coronavirus crisis as an extreme case of defensive expectations.
