Book excerpt: This comprehensive book is an exploration of the history of veterinary medicine from the ancient world to the present as well as an examination of the development of man’s relationship with animals through early domestication, usage for food, fiber, traction, and transport to the current therapies and companion animals. The development of the discipline of veterinary medicine is explored through the transition from art to science and man’s deeper understanding of animals through research and investigation. It is now possible to read both the recorded 4000-year history of animal disease and veterinary development together with the story of the animal-human relationships and welfare as one cohesive text, with extensive backup. The book is organized so that it can be read in a linear manner, or for those researching a particular topic, by direct access to specific content. The species covered in detail are equine, bovine, ovine, caprine, porcine, canine, feline, avian, and aquatic, on every continent. The History of Veterinary Medicine and the Animal-Human Relationship is both an informative read and a definitive reference text for veterinary historians, veterinary history societies, veterinary librarians, and archivists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pioneer Science and the Great Plagues covers the century when infectious plagues—anthrax, tuberculosis, tetanus, plague, smallpox, and polio—were conquered, and details the important role that veterinary scientists played. The narrative is driven by astonishing events that centered on animal disease: the influenza pandemic of 1872, discovery of the causes of anthrax and tuberculosis in the 1880s, conquest of Texas cattle fever and then yellow fever, German anthrax attacks on the United States during World War I, the tuberculin war of 1931, Japanese biological warfare in the 1940s, and today’s bioterror dangers. Veterinary science in the rural Midwest arose from agriculture, but in urban Philadelphia it came from medicine; similar differences occurred in Canada between Toronto and Montreal. As land-grant colleges were established after the American Civil War, individual states followed divergent pathways in supporting veterinary science. Some employed a trade school curriculum that taught agriculturalists to empirically treat animal diseases and others emphasized a curriculum tied to science. This pattern continued for a century, but today some institutions have moved back to the trade school philosophy. Avoiding lessons of the 1910 Flexner Report on medical education reform, university-associated veterinary schools are being approved that do not have control of their own veterinary hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, and research institutes—components that are critical for training students in science. Underlying this change were twin idiosyncrasies of culture—disbelief in science and distrust of government—that spawned scientology, creationism, anti-vaccination movements, and other anti-science scams. As new infectious plagues continue to arise, Pioneer Science and the Great Plagues details the strategies we learned defeating plagues from 1860 to 1960—and the essential role veterinary science played. To defeat the plagues of today it is essential we avoid the digital cocoon of disbelief in science and cultural stasis now threatening progress.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Horseshoeing: For Horseshoers and Veterinarians The inauguration of the law requiring horseshoers to be examined emphasizes the need of a brief and easily understood text-book on theoretical and practical horseshoeing. At the request of the Royal Veterinary Commission in charge of the Royal Veterinary School in Dresden, and many interested individuals, I have attempted to meet this need by condensing within the narrowest possible limits all that is essential to the horseshoer in the practice of his profession. The subject-matter has been cast into a logically arranged course of instruction; all that is superfluous and is found only in exhaustive treatises on shoeing has been omitted. In order to make this elementary text-book more easy to understand, numerous instructive illustrations have been incorporated, which were taken partly from "Der Fuss des Pferdes," by Leisering & Hartmann, fifth edition, Dresden, 1882; partly from the journal Der Hufschmied, and partly from drawings made specially for this work. With the desire that this little book may find many friends and supply them with valuable information, it is herewith given to the public.
