Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a selection of strictly refereed papers first presented during a workshop held within the context of the ESPRIT ModelAge Project in Certosa di Pertignano, Italy, in 1997. The 15 revised full papers presented together with an introductory survey by the volume editors were carefully reviewed for inclusion in the book. The book is devoted to the interdisciplinary study of formal models of agency and intelligent agents from the points of view of artificial intelligence, software engineering, applied logic, databases, and organization theory. Among the topics addressed are various types of agents and multi-agent systems, cooperation, communication, specification, verification, deontic logic, diagnosis, and decision making.

Book Synopsis Crafting Peace by : Caroline A. Hartzell
Download or read book Crafting Peace written by Caroline A. Hartzell and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-10-29 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent efforts to reach a settlement of the enduring and tragic conflict in Darfur demonstrate how important it is to understand what factors contribute most to the success of such efforts. In this book, Caroline Hartzell and Matthew Hoddie review data from all negotiated civil war settlements between 1945 and 1999 in order to identify these factors. What they find is that settlements are more likely to produce an enduring peace if they involve construction of a diversity of power-sharing and power-dividing arrangements between former adversaries. The strongest negotiated settlements prove to be those in which former rivals agree to share or divide state power across its economic, military, political, and territorial dimensions. This finding is a significant addition to the existing literature, which tends to focus more on the role that third parties play in mediating and enforcing agreements. Beyond the quantitative analyses, the authors include a chapter comparing contrasting cases of successful and unsuccessful settlements in the Philippines and Angola, respectively.
Book Synopsis Prognostics and Health Management of Engineering Systems by : Nam-Ho Kim
Download or read book Prognostics and Health Management of Engineering Systems written by Nam-Ho Kim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the methods for predicting the future behavior of a system’s health and the remaining useful life to determine an appropriate maintenance schedule. The authors introduce the history, industrial applications, algorithms, and benefits and challenges of PHM (Prognostics and Health Management) to help readers understand this highly interdisciplinary engineering approach that incorporates sensing technologies, physics of failure, machine learning, modern statistics, and reliability engineering. It is ideal for beginners because it introduces various prognostics algorithms and explains their attributes, pros and cons in terms of model definition, model parameter estimation, and ability to handle noise and bias in data, allowing readers to select the appropriate methods for their fields of application.Among the many topics discussed in-depth are:• Prognostics tutorials using least-squares• Bayesian inference and parameter estimation• Physics-based prognostics algorithms including nonlinear least squares, Bayesian method, and particle filter• Data-driven prognostics algorithms including Gaussian process regression and neural network• Comparison of different prognostics algorithms divThe authors also present several applications of prognostics in practical engineering systems, including wear in a revolute joint, fatigue crack growth in a panel, prognostics using accelerated life test data, fatigue damage in bearings, and more. Prognostics tutorials with a Matlab code using simple examples are provided, along with a companion website that presents Matlab programs for different algorithms as well as measurement data. Each chapter contains a comprehensive set of exercise problems, some of which require Matlab programs, making this an ideal book for graduate students in mechanical, civil, aerospace, electrical, and industrial engineering and engineering mechanics, as well as researchers and maintenance engineers in the above fields.
