It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Teachers Course in Physical Training, Designed for Teachers of the Public Schools Twenty years ago, when this course was first published, preparation of teachers for the work had been little more than begun. During these years it has progressed rapidly and now full courses of a half year or more are given in Anatomy, Physiology, Mechanics of Exercise, Physiology of Exercise, and several other topics. Altho students preparing to be specialists in Physical Education pursue this more extensive course, there are still those who wish to read the general theory of the subject within the limits of a single brief volume, and for such this book is prepared. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Teachers' Course in Physical Training: A Brief Study of the Fundamental Principles of Gymnastic Training; Designed for Teachers of the Public Schools The only excuse for the existence of this little volume is necessity. It has been the duty of the author, during the past four years, to give a ten Weeks' course in the, theory of Physical Training to meet the needs of students prepar ing to teach in the grades of the public schools. It is of course imperative that-these prospective teachers be given as clear an insight as possible into the principles of Anat omy, Physiology, Hygiene, Gymnastic technique, and Peda gogy upon which the teaching of Physical Training de pends. The attempt to have this knowledge acquired by reference to the standard works in these subjects, -a plan that is perfectly feasible in the case of students taking a more complete course, - has resulted in the use of a large amount of time that was comparatively unproductive, because the books that are reliable are very full and very technical in their discussions of these matters. The cir cuinstances demand the use of a text, to be supplemented by lectures, demonstrations and recitations. Such a guide was not to be found in the market, - hence the necessity. The resourceful teacher can make other combina tions, thus increasing the number available for her class. It is not the purpose, therefore, to give an exhaustive series of exercises and devices, but rather to guide the [teacher so that she may add her own ideas to the material given here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syllabus for Physical Education in the Schools of Rhode Island A similar public policy was evidenced in the statute, en acted ih 1917, that authorizes school committees to establish and maintain at public expense clinics for the remedying of dental de fects and the treatment of the teeth of school children whose parents, after notice, neglect to take action. The law requiring physical edu cation was requested ih petitions addressed to the State Board of Education, which were signed by hundreds of persons professing an interest in the welfare of school children. There could be no serious question that a popular demand for physical educationexisted. The movement was promoted particularly by the Rhode Island Branch of the National Congress of Mothers and Parent Teacher Associations. A bill was prepared in the office of the Com missioner of Public Schools, and it was introduced in the General Assembly by the Honorable James M. Armstrong, Senator from East Providence and Chairman of the Committee on Education. The law requires that every child over eight years of age who is attending any school, or who is being educated privately, shall re ceive instruction and practice in physical training, under such regu lations as the State Board of Education may prescribe or approve, during periods which shall average at least twenty minutes in each school day. To the teachers of the public and private schools of Rhode Island is entrusted the duty and responsibility of carrying this salutary legislation into effect - a duty and responsibility that should be met with the conscientious care and public spirit which characterize Rhode Island teachers. The essential and fundamental requirement of the law is twenty minutes of instruction or directed exercise for every child during every school day. This requirement must be met in school and in school time. This Syllabus for Physical Education has been prepared for the purpose of guiding teachers in meeting the requirements of the new law, and it presents a course of instruction planned to cover the eight grades of elementary schools and the four years of high schools. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises and Drills: Being a Teacher's Manual of Physical Training Containing a Progressive Series of Exercises for Use in Schools Without the Aid of Apparatus It is the object of the writer to place in the hands of school teachers a Manual of Physical Training which can be easily understood, and which will prove of assistance in conducting this important branch of school work. The method of arrangement will indicate to the teacher such of the important movements as are suitable for the class room, and will show how they can be properly arranged into short drills. Like every other branch of school work, Physical Training has its difficulties, and the lessons or drills may sometimes lag, but with a little effort on the part of the teacher interest can be awakened, and the real pleasure and benefit derived, when teacher and pupils become familiar with the drill, will more than repay for the effort it costs to make the daily drill a bright Spot in the day's routine. Various systems of Physical Training have been advocated during recent years. They all have their merits and can be commended each for its own peculiar excellencies. But for use in schools they all need modification and adaptation to the conditions and limitations of the school room. The system of exercises and drills presented in this Manual attempts to make a judicious selection of the best features of the different systems. It cannot, therefore, be classed with the Swedish system, with the German system, or with any other of the current systems. If it is to have a special name, it would, perhaps, best be called Eclectic. It is the practice of some systems to omit certain exercises on the ground that they tend to confirm the pupil in his incor rect postures. The method adopted by this Manual, however, is to provide counteracting exercises, without omitting any exercises necessary for symmetrical development. And, in order to emphasize the correct posture, it is the uniform prac tice of this system to follow the contracting and stooping movements by the straightening, extending and expanding movements. My own actual need of such a work has been most clearly shown in my capacity of Lecturer in Physical Training in the Faculty of Education, Uni versity of Toronto. Almost daily I have been asked to recommend some work which would enable these embryo school teachers to learn something of their bodies, and the effect of exercise thereon. As these teachers are no further enlightened in the subject of physical training than the general public, it is not necessary to write anything but 'a simple, concise work on the subject. By dividing same into five parts, one is enabled to secure what is wanted without wading through unnecessary reading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syllabus and Manual of Physical Training for Public Schools This book is the outcome of the experience of the author in nine years' work as instructor and director of physical training in public schools. In -the preparation of the manuscript valuable suggestions and ideas of organization and arrangement of material were received from workers in the same field and from the many excellent syllabi now used in various city school systems. The object in presenting the work is to give teachers a guide for classroom exercises and concrete examples of required work in physical training with instructions and explanations necessary to make clear interpretations of subject matter. Adequate material is offered and arranged to comply with the New York State requirements in physical training B, D and E. Especial attention is called to the explanations of movements of the different parts of the body; recreation drills; graded lessons; athletic periods for boys and girls; imaginary plays, and games. Attention should also be called to the fact that habits of regular exercise and of personal cleanliness are health measures and are essential parts of any program for the health education of school children. As the direct result of carrying out this course in physical training children will acquire the health habits taught. We can examine each child to find out if the exercises are practiced regularly at home; if the talks on personal cleanliness are bearing fruit in the improvement of the child's personal appearance; and if the-habit of walking and sitting in correct position is becoming fixed. Valuable assistance in the preparation of this manual was rendered by Dr. Horatio M. Pollock and Miss Ruth Slocum, and expert criticism was kindly given by Dr. Thomas A. Storey, Inspector of Physical Training, New York State. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Physical Training for Boys and Girls: For Use by Public-School Teachers, Parents, and the Superintendents, of Junior Societies in Churches Tms book is not an argument for strengthening our belief in the efficiency of physical training; rather, it is a short manual which will guide us to some of the best methods of developing the boy and girl. We already have faith in gym nasties and athletics, in games and plays, in competitive sports; but, having nailed our flag to the mast, let us now stand by our guns and protect the boy and the girl by so developing them morally and physically that their own bodies, their own minds, and the ideals that impel them to every voluntary act of life will form a bulwark against the slings and arrows that will assail them throughout their lives. The boy and girl will never get along better by being neglected, they will certainly be well armored and forewarned if they are trained early. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training in the Public Schools of Philadelphia It is well, also, that we should be on our guard against a kind of pseudo manual training that is finding its way into the schools. As is always the case with new move ments, there is a good deal of experimenting with little knacks, which do nothing for either discipline or knowl edge. These are put forward by well-meaning persons as manual training, and great harm is done in this way in misleading the public and wasting the time and energies ofpupfls.
