Book Synopsis Dinoflagellates by : David L. Spector
Download or read book Dinoflagellates written by David L. Spector and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with a general introduction and a taxonomic description of the dinoflagellates both to acquaint those unfamiliar with this group of organisms and to set the tone for the rest of the volume. It then addresses the following topics: cell biology (cell cortex, nuclear structure, cell cycle and mitosis, sexual reproduction, cysts and unusual inclusions); biochemistry (physiology and biochemistry, blooms and toxins, and biorhythms); and genetics. In addition, a comprehensive chapter on cell culturing provides the reader with an understanding of the growth conditions and requirements of various dinoflagellates and a simple to follow listing of culture media, all expressed in similar units for ease of comparison. The volume closes with a chapter on evolution which evaluates many of the features of dinoflagellates discussed in the text in terms of evolutionary significance. We hope that this treatise will be of use to research workers and students in the area of dinoflagellate biology and in other areas of biology in which dinoflagellates may be used as a model system for studying various biological problems.
Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Palaeobotany by : Sergei Meyen
Download or read book Fundamentals of Palaeobotany written by Sergei Meyen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been at least ten English-language textbooks of palaeobotany since D. H. Scott published the first edition of Studies inFossilBotany in 1900. Most have been written by scientists who were primarily botanists by training, and were aimed largely at a readership familiar with living plants. They tended to follow a general pattern of an introductory chapter on preservation of plants as fossils, followed by a systematic treatment, group by group. Only Seward in his Plant Life Through the Ages departed from this pattern in presenting a chronological sequence. In the present book, Meyen breaks with?is tradition. Although having a basically biological approach, he reaches out into all aspects of the history of plant life and the wider implication of its study. Only half of the present work deals sequentially with fossil plant groups, treated systematically. The remainder then explores those topics which most other textbooks have incidentally??e generally either ignored or have only mentioned rather problems of naming and classifying fragmentary plant fossils, their ecology; biogeography and palaeoclimatic significance and the contribution that?ey have made to the understanding of living plant morphology, and of the process of evolution.

Book Synopsis Biostratigraphy and Palaeontology of the Scollard Formation, Late Cretaceous and Paleocene of Alberta by : Loris S. Russell
Download or read book Biostratigraphy and Palaeontology of the Scollard Formation, Late Cretaceous and Paleocene of Alberta written by Loris S. Russell and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scollard Formation is the uppermost division of the Edmonton Group, exposed in the valley of Red Deer River, Alberta, north of Drumheller and east of Red Deer. The lower portion of the formation contains fossil vertebrates, including dinosaurs and mammals that correlate with those of the Lance Formation of Wyoming and the Hell Creek Formation of Montana. The highest stratigraphic occurrence of this fauna is at the Henry Farm locality, west of Content Bridge, where a wide range of vertebrates is represented by isolated teeth and bones. This occurrence is well below the Ardley coal seam. Above this seam is a shell bed containing a fauna of freshwater molluscs, ostracods, and fish remains. The molluscs correlate with those of the Paskapoo and other nonmarine Paleocene formations, but one species is known elsewhere only from Cretaceous deposits. This fauna is assigned to the early Paleocene. On the basis of the highest occurence of dinosaur fossils, the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary is taken to be about 11 m below the Ardley coal seam and about 20 m below the shell bed.
