Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Physical Chemistry, Vol. 3 of 3 In this volume an attempt is made to deal with some physico-chemical applications of the principles of statistical mechanics. An account is first given of the application of what is now known as the classical statistical mechanics, more particularly to the problem of the energy content of substances and its variation with temperature, on the one hand, and to the problem of radiation on the other. It will be seen that in both these branches classical statistical mechanics makes it possible for us to advance very considerably beyond the limits set by the elementary kinetic theory employed in Volume I., but at the same time it will be found that the classical statistical mechanics does not furnish us with a complete and adequate basis for all the observed phenomena. It is therefore necessary to enlarge or modify the fundamental concepts of statistical mechanics, and it is precisely with this object in view that Planck has been led to introduce the idea of quanta. Planck's quantum theory is, therefore, properly speaking, a new or modified system of statistical mechanics. It happens, however, that Planck was led to his revolutionary changes by considerations based upon the observed facts of radiation, and for this reason it is usual to speak of the quantum theory of radiation. Radiation affords, as a matter of fact, one illustration, and a very striking one, of the applicability of the new mechanics. But even the success which has attended Planck's treatment of radiation problems would scarcely have sufficed to gain for his views that prominence which they now have, had it not been for the satisfactory explanation which his theory offers at the same time for the heat content of substances and the variation of the heat content with temperature. The idea of energy quanta has been applied in recent years to other types of physico-chemical phenomena, some of which will be considered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Physical Chemistry, Vol. 1 of 3 As regards the thermodynamical treatment, it will be seen that the concept of maximum wor and free energy has been employed practically to the exclusion of others. I have found by experience that this is more easily grasped than the idea of entropy, although I suppose that ultimately this must be something of a mental delusion. In addition a certain amount of new material has been incorporated so as to bring the book up to date as far as possible. The principal additions are: in Chapter VII, the emf. Method of determining the transport number of an ion as employed by macinnes and Parker, an account of the investigation of Richards and Daniells on thallium amalgam cells, and Tolman's work on centrifugal cells; in Chapter VIII, an extended section dealing with ionic activity and ionisation, chiefly the work of the American School of Physical Chemistry. The problem of the activity of undissociated molecules is also considered. In Chapter XI, a résumé of the experimental evidence for Donnan's theory of membrane equilibria is given, and a fairly full account of the concept of the micelle in elec trolytic colloids. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Chemistry: In the Service of Medicine Seven Addresses The addresses which have been collected for the first time in this volume and which were delivered in the main as summaries of my own special investigations concern themselves with the application of physical chemistry to different fields in medicine as rendered possible more particularly through advances in the physics and chemistry of organic colloids. In that questions in physiology as well as pathology and pharmacology are touched upon, it may perhaps be hoped that different circles of medical men may be interested in the problems discussed in this volume. The translated addresses differ in only a few unimportant abbreviations from the original. The development of the guiding thought common to all of them stands out quite clearly. Its foundation is the extensive parallelism between the laws which govern changes in the colloidal stale in vitro and in the living organism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Physical Chemistry It has been the aim of the author to deal with the whole subject of physical chemistry in an elementary manner. The rapidly increasing desire, on the part of students of chemistry and physics, to know more of physical chemistry is manifesting itself in every direction. It is with the object of helping such students in the later stages of their college work and in the earlier part of their university career that this work has been prepared. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Chemistry for Colleges: A Course of Instruction Based Upon the Fundamental Laws of Chemistry No attempt has been made to cover the whole of physical chemistry in a single volume; its most important topics have been treated at such length as the size of the volume allows, and numerous references to recent periodical literature are included for those who would pursue any given topic further. The limitations of the orthodox laws of physical chemistry have been emphasized more than is commonly done in beginning courses of physical chemistry. To this end the illustrative data have been carefully chosen from modern experimental work, in order to minimize the experimental errors which are so often used to conceal real deviations of a law from the facts it is in tended to express. A trusting belief in inadequate physical laws will only retard the scientific progress of a student, and weaken his faith in adequate laws; whereas a wholesome appreciation that physical chemistry is an unfinished and growing science may stimulate thoughtfulness and research. The proper time to encourage a research attitude is in the very beginning of a stu dent's chemical career. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Physical Chemistry Theory and Practice It is probable that the majority of students will have had already a few of the more distinctly physical experiments. Much of the general information regarding units, etc., in the Introduction and in the first part of several chapters is also probably familiar to some, but is included for completeness and for reference. Physical Chemistry apparatus which is understood with difficulty or the description of which is instructive, is described under the appropriate topic in the body of the book. All other apparatus, methods, etc., are described in the Intro duction. The Introduction also contains references to all the apparatus considered elsewhere, together with mathematical data, discussion of errors, etc., so that the book constitutes a complete manual for all ordinary work in Physical Chemistry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Chemistry for Beginners IN the book at hand the author has endeavored to collect the most important results of physical chemistry in such a manner that this important branch of modern chemistry may be accessible to those who have not made an exhaustive study of physics and mathematics. The requirements of students of medicine and phar macy, as well as of elementary chemistry, have been especially considered in the preparation of this work. The author desires to express his sincere thanks to Dr. Ernst Cohen, who has prepared the present edition.
