Book Synopsis A Syllable of Water by : Emilie Griffin
Download or read book A Syllable of Water written by Emilie Griffin and published by Paraclete Press (MA). This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deep well of practical and inspirational wisdom for every Christian writer Imagine you have the chance to spend an hour or so alone with a couple of well-published writers. Imagine they share with you secrets of their art, and reveal how their art relates to their faith. This is the experience awaiting you with the twenty-two authors of this book. In A Syllable of Water, some of today's leading writers of faith reflect on all aspects of the writing vocation and process in ways that will inform and inspire. Philip Yancey, Richard Foster, Luci Shaw, and others discuss everything from the tools of a writer to the ways that they spend their time when they are not writing. Editors such as John Wilson (Books & Culture) and American Book Award-winning Cherokee poet, Diane Glancy, reflect on the value of the editor-writer conversation, as well as the power of revision. And other writers of stature including Doris Betts, John Leax, Erin McGraw, Harold Fickett, Virginia Stem Owens, Jeanne Murray Walker, Scott Cairns, and Eugene H. Peterson offer sage advice on how to approach nearly every imaginable genre from fiction and nonfiction to memoir, poetry, and translation. Editor Emilie Griffin is the author of several books, including Small Surrenders, Doors into Prayer and Wonderful and Dark is This Road. She is a founding member of the Chrysostom Society, a group of distinguished writers who meet periodically to discuss matters of faith and writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all the ancient spiritual texts water is depicted as the Source of all Creation from which everything else came into existence. All over the world, in our forefathers' traditions and rituals water is associated with the Primordial substance that has the power to heal, give us strength, and take away the sins. At the same time, modern scientific discoveries proved that our ancestors' beliefs, traditions, and rituals are a legacy and not some simple bet-time stories. Learn how your Emotions, Thoughts, and Intentions are influencing your Life, carried by the life-giving substance we call Water. “This book covers a world of topics about water, from different religious texts, the chemistry and physics of H2O, studies over the past century on observations of fresh water, homeopathy, crystal structure, and different vibrations and forms of water, and back to religion. I learned so much.” (Amazon customer review) “A thorough, well-researched discussion of the significance of water--not only as a fundamental element of our biology and the structure of our planet and the universe--but also its metaphysical, philosophical, and theological importance historically and cross-culturally.” (Amazon customer review)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that Miao-Yao (or Hmong-Mien) is one of the major language families of East and Southeast Asia, this work is only the second full-length descriptive grammar of any Miao-Yao language published in English. It focuses on Xong, a language belonging to the Miao branch of the family. Xong has approximately 900,000 speakers, the vast majority lives in Hunan and Guizhou Provinces in South-Central China. In particular, this description concentrates on several fully mutually intelligible Xong varieties spoken in Fenghuang County, located in the Hunan Province. In producing this work, the author primarily relies on the fieldwork data he collected over a period of ten months in Fenghuang County. He also made use of many of the previously published Chinese-language descriptions of Xong. The results are of use to scholars with an interest in the Miao-Yao family in particular or in the languages of East and Southeast Asia more in general.

Book Synopsis Is Japanese Related to Korean, Tungusic, Mongolic and Turkic? by : Martine Irma Robbeets
Download or read book Is Japanese Related to Korean, Tungusic, Mongolic and Turkic? written by Martine Irma Robbeets and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2005 with total page 980 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where does Japanese come from? The linguistic origin of the Japanese language is among the most disputed questions of language history. One current hypothesis is that Japanese is an Altaic language, sharing a common ancestor with Korean, Tungusic, Mongolic and Turkic. But, the opinions are strongly polarized. Especially the inclusion of Japanese into this classification model is very much under debate. Given the lack of consensus in the field, this book presents a state of the art for the etymological evidence relating Japanese to Korean, Tungusic, Mongolic and Turkic. The different Altaic etymologies proposed in the scholarly literature are gathered in an etymological index of Japanese appended to this book. An item-by-item sifting of the evidence helps to hold down borrowings, universal similarities and coincidental look-alikes to a small percentage. When the remaining core-evidence is screened in terms of phonological regularity, the answer to the intriguing question is beginning to take shape.
