This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English language is currently used as a second or foreign language in those countries which had once been British colonies. For example, when united India was partitioned into two main countries, India and Pakistan, it was intended that English would gradually be replaced as the language of administration in both countries. However, as the countries were also home to several regional languages, attempts to introduce a sole official language and abolish English as the second official language have never succeeded. In today’s world, English is the language of the cultural, social and political elite, offering significant economic, political and social advantages to fluent speakers. Speakers of the English language automatically enjoy greater social status and have easier access to positions of power and influence. Learning and teaching the English language has therefore become a concern for those who cannot afford to study in native-speaking countries or at local expensive English-medium schools. This book provides various government and non-government educational and professional institutions with simple and practical language-learning courses which fulfil the requirements of people who want to learn English. It will be of great interest to a wide variety of readers, including teachers, language learners, students, linguistic departments, general readers who are struggling to learn English, and professionals who want to overcome the language barrier.

Book Synopsis Non-native Educators in English Language Teaching by : George Braine
Download or read book Non-native Educators in English Language Teaching written by George Braine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The place of native and non-native speakers in the role of English teachers has probably been an issue ever since English was taught internationally. Although ESL and EFL literature is awash, in fact dependent upon, the scrutiny of non-native learners, interest in non-native academics and teachers is fairly new. Until recently, the voices of non-native speakers articulating their own concerns have been even rarer. This book is a response to this notable vacuum in the ELT literature, providing a forum for language educators from diverse geographical origins and language backgrounds. In addition to presenting autobiographical narratives, these authors argue sociopolitical issues and discuss implications for teacher education, all relating to the theme of non-native educators in ETL. All of the authors are non-native speakers of English. Some are long established professionals, whereas others are more recent initiates to the field. All but one received part of the higher education in North America, and all except two of the chapters are at least partially contextualized in North America. Particularly relevant for non-native speakers who aspire to enter the profession, graduate students in TESOL programs, and teacher educators, the unique nature of this book's contributors and its contents will interest researchers and professionals in applied linguistics generally and in ELT, and all those who are concerned with the role of non-native speakers in English-language teaching.
Download or read book TESOL: A Guide written by Jun Liu and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves as a comprehensive reference resource for current and prospective English language teachers, students of TESOL, academics, and other professionals working within the field of Teaching English as a Second or Other Language (TESOL). As an essential single-volume resource, TESOL: A Guide explores TESOL in three dimensions: as a profession, as a field of study, and as an international association. In doing so, it offers a thorough summary of themes and issue relevant to TESOL's multiple dimensions, including a practical overview of the TESOL profession and a compendium of current TESOL research topics and methodologies. In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of TESOL International Association, a key section of the book highlights the development of this association and features the reflections of several previous TESOL International Association presidents. Readers will also appreciate the extensive glossary and appendix of TESOL resources, both of which are designed to comprise a valuable and manageable guide for newcomers to the field, as well as for developing practitioners and researchers.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world that is becoming more globalized, it is important now more than ever that the English language is learned by people in education, business, media, and politics. As English is taught and spoken in every corner of the world, this thesis document lays out the challenges faced by the many Non-Native English Speaking Teachers (NNESTs) in the United States context. The problem now is that there is a misconception that Native English Speaking Teachers (NESTs) are better teachers than NNESTs otherwise known as the Native Speaker fallacy. Schools prefer to hire NESTs over NNESTs with the only differences being place of birth, mother-tongue, physical appearance (non-white), and having an accent. -- The research in this study focused on eight participating NNESTs and how they applied various pedagogical approaches to overcome these challenges. Through personal statements and experiences, this research found that NNESTs have some unique advantages such as being bilingual, having empathy for students and deep grammatical knowledge. It is only the preference of schools and students for NESTs that hinder job opportunities and create a sense of insecurity among NNEST.--
