Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To help Qatar identify priorities for developing post-secondary educational offerings, this report presents the results of a survey of Qatari students enrolled in their final year of secondary school concerning their attitudes about further education and future work plans. Although males and females agreed on the importance of post-secondary education, they differed on their intention to pursue it. Male students reported being very certain or somewhat certain they could get a high-paying and secure job without seeking further education, whereas females indicated that they would need post-secondary education to get the job they wanted. To better respond to its workforce demands, Qatar should restructure its incentives for attracting more males into post-secondary education and training, and continue efforts to remove constraints on female labor force participation.

Download or read book A Survey of Recent Qatari Secondary School Graduates written by Francisco Martorell and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 2008 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To help Qatar identify priorities for developing post-secondary educational offerings, this report presents the results of a survey of Qataris who left secondary school in 1998 concerning their education and employment experiences since graduation. Most sample members worked in a government ministry or for an establishment owned by the government. The survey showed sharp gender differences. For example, majors in education and the humanities were pursued exclusively by women. And, although more women than men had completed university training, fewer women were employed. Both male and female respondents felt that being made to feel respected and appreciated was the most important feature of a job. This knowledge could help policymakers develop policies to foster greater willingness to work in the private sector.

Book Synopsis Armies of Sand by : Kenneth Michael Pollack
Download or read book Armies of Sand written by Kenneth Michael Pollack and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Second World War, Arab armed forces have consistently punched below their weight. They have lost many wars that by all rights they should have won, and in their best performances only ever achieved quite modest accomplishments. Over time, soldiers, scholars, and military experts have offered various explanations for this pattern. Reliance on Soviet military methods, the poor civil-military relations of the Arab world, the underdevelopment of the Arab states, and patterns of behavior derived from the wider Arab culture, have all been suggested as the ultimate source of Arab military difficulties. Armies of Sand, Kenneth M. Pollack's powerful and riveting history of Arab armies from the end of World War Two to the present, assesses these differing explanations and isolates the most important causes. Over the course of the book, he examines the combat performance of fifteen Arab armies and air forces in virtually every Middle Eastern war, from the Jordanians and Syrians in 1948 to Hizballah in 2006 and the Iraqis and ISIS in 2014-2017. He then compares these experiences to the performance of the Argentine, Chadian, Chinese, Cuban, North Korean, and South Vietnamese armed forces in their own combat operations during the twentieth century. The book ultimately concludes that reliance on Soviet doctrine was more of a help than a hindrance to the Arabs. In contrast, politicization and underdevelopment were both important factors limiting Arab military effectiveness, but patterns of behavior derived from the dominant Arab culture was the most important factor of all. Pollack closes with a discussion of the rapid changes occurring across the Arab world-political, economic, and cultural-as well as the rapid evolution in war making as a result of the information revolution. He suggests that because both Arab society and warfare are changing, the problems that have bedeviled Arab armed forces in the past could dissipate or even vanish in the future, with potentially dramatic consequences for the Middle East military balance. Sweeping in its historical coverage and highly accessible, this will be the go-to reference for anyone interested in the history of warfare in the Middle East since 1945.

Book Synopsis Gender Representation in Learning Materials by : Abolaji S. Mustapha
Download or read book Gender Representation in Learning Materials written by Abolaji S. Mustapha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representations of gender in learning materials convey an implicit message to students about attitudes towards culturally appropriate gender roles for women and men. This collection takes a linguistic approach to exploring theories about gender representation within the sphere of education and textbooks, and their effects on readers and students within an international context. In the opening section, contributors discuss theories of representation and effect, challenging the conventional Althusserian model of interpellation, and acknowledging the challenges of applying Western feminist models within an international context. Following chapters provide detailed analyses focusing on a number of different countries: Australia, Japan, Brazil, Finland, Russia, Hong Kong, Nigeria, Germany, Qatar, Tanzania, and Poland. Through linguistic analysis of vocabulary associated with women and men, content analysis of what women and men say in textbooks, and discourse analysis of the types of linguistic moves associated with women and men, contributors evaluate the extent to which gendered representations in textbooks perpetuate stereotypical gender roles, what the impact may be on learners, and the ways that both teachers and learners interact and engage with these texts.

Book Synopsis Shadow Education in the Middle East by : Mark Bray
Download or read book Shadow Education in the Middle East written by Mark Bray and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-08 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers insights into the role of private supplementary tutoring in the Middle East, and its far-reaching implications for social structures and mainstream education. Around the world, increasing numbers of children receive private tutoring to supplement their schooling. In much of the academic literature this is called shadow education because the content of tutoring commonly mimics that of schooling: as the curriculum changes in the schools, so it changes in the shadow. While much research and policy attention has focused on private tutoring in East Asia and some other world regions, less attention has been given to the topic in the Middle East. Drawing on both Arabic-language and English-language literature, this study commences with the global picture before comparing patterns within and among 12 Arabic-speaking countries of the Middle East. It presents the educational and cultural commonalities amongst these countries, examines the drivers of demand and supply of shadow education, and considers the dynamics of tutoring and how it impacts on education in schools. In addition to its pertinence within the Middle East itself, the book will be of considerable interest to academics and education policy makers broadly concerned with changing roles of the state and private sectors in education. The text further articulates the pivotal political and cultural influences that act as real and perceived barriers towards the advancement of key fields. The chapters analyze the current policy trends, structures, and coping alternatives in addressing higher education challenges, whilst also providing comparative first-hand texts with the other Arab states in the region. By drawing focus on the GCC area, the text identifies the crucial factors that hamper learning and research performance. The book serves as an invaluable discussion on the implications for policy makers and HEIs in relation to the eponymous regions and other Arab states in the GCC area. Enhancing understanding of the scope, scale, and complexity of higher education and scientific research in the GCC area, the book will be of interest to academics, researchers, and post-graduate students in the fields of educational policy, comparative and international education and higher education.

Book Synopsis The Past, Present, and Future of Higher Education in the Arabian Gulf Region by : Awad Ibrahim
Download or read book The Past, Present, and Future of Higher Education in the Arabian Gulf Region written by Awad Ibrahim and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-29 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume contributes a novel understanding of the past, present and future of higher education across the six countries that make up the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Against the backdrop of intense political, ideological and epistemological disruptions across the Arabian Gulf Region over the last two decades, this volume adopts critical comparative perspectives in order to chart the history, present-day and future realities of higher education in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait. By focusing on dynamics relating to neoliberalism, and using the notions of ‘tensionality’ and ‘locality’ to situate topics such as curricula, policies, practices, the volume engages with current discourses, controversies and themes such as the internationalization and marketization of higher education in these countries. In doing so, the book offers a theoretical framework to enable greater understanding of the contemporary functioning of higher education in the Arabian Gulf Region. This text will benefit scholars, academics and students in the fields of higher education and international and comparative education more broadly. Those involved with educational policy and politics, and Middle Eastern studies in general, will also benefit from this volume.

Book Synopsis School Leadership in the Context of Standards-Based Reform by : Louis Volante
Download or read book School Leadership in the Context of Standards-Based Reform written by Louis Volante and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-16 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Although standards-based reform emerged in the United States and the United Kingdom, the idea has spread across the world, as an approach to systemic reform. It might appear that there is a world-wide “tsunami” of standards-based reform that will standardize and homogenize the educational system across the globe. This volume makes it very clear, however, that there is no one approach to standards-based reform and countries change – there is a danger in paying attention to its evolution and impact in only one context. That’s what makes this volume so valuable. Louis Volante has drawn together descriptions from a wide range of countries, all involved in large-scale reform and using standards and assessments as part of their process. What becomes very obvious is that the language may be the same but the words reflect different contexts and can represent very different ideals, values, and processes. I’m sure you will find this book as interesting and challenging as I have – a gem that pushes your thinking and does not allow readers to remain neutral.” (Lorna Earl)
