Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Puerto Ricans are a people divided between two nations - neither of which truly belongs to them. Of the 5 million Puerto Ricans today, 3 million live on the island of Puerto Rico and more than 2 million in the USA, principally in New York and the north-east. They are the descendents of Spanish settlers, African slaves and other immigrant communities. Their first language is Spanish yet they live in a nation where English is the main language. The island of Puerto Rico, formerly a Spanish and then a US colony, from 1952 has had 'Commonwealth' status with the USA - neither independence nor statehood. Its people have had US citizenship since 1917 and can move freely between the island and the mainland - yet the island has no representatives in the US Congress. Different political groups campaign for the three options of independence, greater autonomy or US statehood but the political situation remains stagnant. Economic depression pushes many Puerto Ricans to immigrate to the US cities, where they face discrimination and severe problems in employment, education and health. Today they are the second poorest ethnic group in the US. Puerto Ricans in the US, Minority Rights Group report no 58, describes the situation of Puerto Ricans on the island and the mainland. Written by Kai Wagenheim and produced by the New York Minority Rights Group, it is an important contribution towards increased understanding of this increasingly-important but little known group.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thoroughly revised and updated in this second edition, this clear and thoughtful text offers a geographical analysis of the history of U.S. immigration patterns and the development of selected ethnic minority groups. The book focuses especially on their origin, diffusion, socioeconomic characteristics, and settlement patterns within the United States. The book sets the context with opening chapters that discuss migration theory and the history of U.S. migration from 1607 to the present, including major U.S. immigration legislation, and provide a background for the time of entry, volume, and spatial distribution of various groups. Case-study chapters then analyze each of those groups, including Native Americans and those of African, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Cuban, Jewish, Japanese, Chinese, and Indochinese origin. The final section of the book explores rural and urban ethnic enclaves, focusing especially on immigrant groups of European heritage and their impacts on the cultural landscape of the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Island Paradox is the first comprehensive, census-based portrait of social and economic life in Puerto Rico. During its nearly fiftyyears as a U.S. commonwealth, the relationship between Puerto Rico's small, developing economy and the vastly larger, more industrialized United States has triggered profound changes in the island's industry and labor force. Puerto Rico has been deeply affected by the constant flow of its people to and from the mainland, and by the influx of immigrant workers from other nations. Distinguished economists Francisco Rivera-Batiz and Carlos Santiago provide the latest data on the socioeconomic status of Puerto Rico today, and examine current conditions within the context of the major trends of the past two decades.sland Paradox describes many improvements in Puerto Rico's standard of living, including rising per-capita income, longer life expectancies, greater educational attainment, and increased job prospects for women. But it also discusses the devastating surge in unemployment. Rapid urbanization and a vanishing agricultural sector have led to severe inequality, as family income has become increasingly dependent on education and geographic location. Although Puerto Rico's close ties to the United States were the major source of the island's economic growth prior to 1970, they have also been at the root of recent hardships. Puerto Rico's trade andbusiness transactions remain predominantly with the United States, but changes in federal tax, social, and budgetary policies, along with international agreements such as NAFTA, now threaten to alter the economic ties between the island and the mainland.
