Book excerpt: A survey of ohmic contact materials and properties to GaAs, InP, GaN will be presented along with critical issues pertaining to each semiconductor material. Au-based alloys (e.g., GeAuNi for n-type GaAs) are the most commonly used contacts for GaAs and InP materials for both n- and p-type contacts due to the excellent contact resistivity, reliability, and usefulness over a wide range of doping levels. Research into new contacting schemes for these materials has focused on addressing limitations of the conventional Au-alloys in thermal stability, propensity for spiking, poor edge definition, and new approaches for a non-alloyed contact. The alternative contacts to GaAs and InP include alloys with higher temperature stability, contacts based on solid phase regrowth, and contacts that react with the substrate to form lower bandgap semiconductors alloys at the interface. A new area of contact studies is for the wide bandgap group III-Nitride materials. At present, low resistivity ohmic contact to p-type GaN has not been obtained primarily due to the large acceptor ionization energy and the resultant difficulty in achieving high free hole concentrations at room temperature. For n-type GaN, however, significant progress has been reported with reactive Ti-based metalization schemes or the use of graded InGaN layers. The present status of these approaches will be reviewed.

Book excerpt: This Springer Handbook of Metrology and Testing presents the principles of Metrology – the science of measurement – and the methods and techniques of Testing – determining the characteristics of a given product – as they apply to chemical and microstructural analysis, and to the measurement and testing of materials properties and performance, including modelling and simulation. The principal motivation for this Handbook stems from the increasing demands of technology for measurement results that can be used globally. Measurements within a local laboratory or manufacturing facility must be able to be reproduced accurately anywhere in the world. The book integrates knowledge from basic sciences and engineering disciplines, compiled by experts from internationally known metrology and testing institutions, and academe, as well as from industry, and conformity-assessment and accreditation bodies. The Commission of the European Union has expressed this as there is no science without measurements, no quality without testing, and no global markets without standards.

Book excerpt: Volume 1, Metal and Semiconductor Nanowires covers a wide range of materials systems, from noble metals (such as Au, Ag, Cu), single element semiconductors (such as Si and Ge), compound semiconductors (such as InP, CdS and GaAs as well as heterostructures), nitrides (such as GaN and Si3N4) to carbides (such as SiC). The objective of this volume is to cover the synthesis, properties and device applications of nanowires based on metal and semiconductor materials. The volume starts with a review on novel electronic and optical nanodevices, nanosensors and logic circuits that have been built using individual nanowires as building blocks. Then, the theoretical background for electrical properties and mechanical properties of nanowires is given. The molecular nanowires, their quantized conductance, and metallic nanowires synthesized by chemical technique will be introduced next. Finally, the volume covers the synthesis and properties of semiconductor and nitrides nanowires.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epitaxial growth and electronic properties of semiconductor thin films are becoming increasingly important for fundamental and applied research and for device applications. This book contains a comprehensive collection of over 1500 references covering the first 25 years of molecular beam epitaxy of III-V compound semiconductors. Molecular beam epitaxy is a versatile thin film growth technique which emerged from the 'Three-temperature method' de veloped in the 1950s and from surface kinetic studies performed in the 1960s. III-V semiconductors such as GaAs, AlAs, (Galn)As, InP, etc., play an important role in the application to optoelectronic and high-speed devices. Over the past three years the technology of molecular beam epitaxy has spread rapidly to most major research and development laboratories through out the world, and an increasing number of highly refined III-V semiconduc tor structures with exactly tailored electronic properties have been pro duced and explored for fundamental studies as well as for device appl ica tion. The comprehensive bibliography on this dramatically expanding topic helps chemists, engineers, materials scientists, and physicists working in semiconductor research and development areas to sort out the important lit erature of their particular interest. A direct reproduction of the output of a computer printer has been used to enable rapid publication and to keep printing costs low.
