His letters begin in late 1915 on the journey across the Atlantic to the European battlefield. He is filled with worldly-wonder and naiveté as he encounters figures as diverse as Colonels to French peasants, and recounts the daily trials and tribulations of the soldiers life in Belgium with wit; for example, he describes his batman as “a soldier paid by you to be absent when you want him.” Particularly interesting is the tone of the narrative in which he attempts to educate his mother of life in the army, and in tone, cheerful beyond modern cyncism. Collected and posthumously published by his mother, they make for a gripping and atmospheric read. Author — Anon “Billy” Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in Toronto, McClelland, Goodchild and Stewart, 1916. Original Page Count – 175 pages.

Book excerpt: Further letters from the Front, continuing on from “A Sunny Subaltern, Billy’s Letters from Flanders.” The young Canadian officer continues his adventures, in and out of the trenches. He begins with a quick note to his mother to confirm that he was recovering well from shrapnel wounds in London. After a brief convalescence, he is back in the thick of the fighting, sending one letter to his mother postmarked “In the Field (of mud)”. His naiveté of the first volume is still evident, but is beginning to wane as he becomes almost fatalist in tone toward the later part of the book. In hospital once again with appendicitis, he emotionally recounts his meetings with the many casualties with him, including those gassed and blinded. His letters are packed with the details of his service such as dug-outs, observation posts and the “dreary ditch known as ‘The line.’”. His letters offer a fascinating insight into the First World War at the Front. Collected and posthumously published by his mother, they make for a gripping and atmospheric read. Author — Anon “Billy” Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in Toronto, McClelland, Goodchild and Stewart, 1917. Original Page Count – 121 pages.

Book excerpt: The Great War gave birth to some of the twentieth century's most celebrated writing; from D. H. Lawrence to Siegfried Sassoon, the literature generated by the war is etched into collective memory. But it is in fiction that we find some of the most profound insights into the war's individual and communal tragedies, the horror of life in the trenches, and the grand farce of the first industrial war.Featuring forty-seven writers from twenty different nations, representing all the main participants in the conflict, No Man's Land is a truly international anthology of World War I fiction.Work by Siegfried Sassoon, Erich Maria Remarque, Willa Cather, William Faulkner, and Rose Macaulay sits alongside forgotten masterpieces such as Stratis Myrivilis's Life in the Tomb, Raymond Escholier's Mahmadou Fofana, and Mary Borden's The Forbidden Zone. No Man's Land is a brilliant memorial to the twentieth century's most cataclysmic event.

This new Second Edition increases coverage by 35%! There are two sequences: Part I - which now includes more than 17,000 entries- is an alphabetical list of pseudonyms followed by the writer's real name. Part II is an alphabetical list of writers cited in Part I-more than 10,000 writers included-providing brief biographical details followed by pseudonyms used by the wrter and titles published under those pseudonyms. Dictionary or Literary Pseudonyms has now become a standard reference work on the subject for teachers, student, and public, high school, and college/universal librarians. The Second Edition will, we believe, consolidate that reputation.

Book excerpt: Clio's Warriors examines how the Canadian world war experience has been constructed and reconstructed over time. Tim Cook elucidates the role of historians in codifying the sacrifice and struggle of a generation as he discusses historical memory and writing, the creation of archives, and the war of reputations that followed each of the world wars on the battlefield. Only recently have military historians pushed the discipline to explore the impact of war on society. In analyzing where the practice of academic military history has come from and where it needs to go, Clio's Warriors plays a vital role in the ongoing challenge of writing critical history.

Personal Perspectives: World War I offers a unique and unprecedented view of the Great War through the experiences of its participants—people of all ranks and races. Focusing on 12 major groups, essays by top international scholars put readers directly into the lives of victims of gas attacks, women factory workers, African American soldiers, pacifists, medical personnel, and other groups both on the battlefield and home front. Of interest to both students and nonexperts, the work tells the stories of soldiers who suffered in the trenches, U-boat and anti–U-boat personnel, German Americans in the United States, and women activists like Florence Jaffrey Harriman. Through the perspectives of commanders, captives, civilians, and social workers, readers will learn why British soldiers in the Netherlands were called "maiden robbers," how the YMCA set up huts to care for prisoners in POW camps, and how efforts to entertain U.S. troops led to the the largest theatrical enterprise in history.

Book excerpt: The first comprehensive history of Canadians in WWI in forty years, and already hailed as the definitive work on Canadians in the Great War, At the Sharp End covers the harrowing early battles of 1914—16. Tens of thousands, and then hundreds of thousands, died before the generals and soldiers found a way to break the terrible stalemate of the front. Based on eyewitness accounts detailed in the letters of ordinary soldiers, Cook describes the horrible struggle, first to survive in battle, and then to drive the Germans back. At the Sharp End provides both an intimate look at the Canadian men in the trenches and an authoritative account of the slow evolution in tactics, weapons, and advancement. Featuring never-before-published photographs, letters, diaries, and maps, this recounting of the Great War through the soldiers' eyes is moving, engaging, and thoroughly engrossing.
