Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What we have here is a failure to communicate. A misguided attempt to discover something about myself. Something genuine worth smiling for. It may be convoluted. It may be conspicuous. Hell, it might not even make any sense, but that's for you to decide upon and for me to not care about. In the end, I'm only 23, and this is just a jumble of writings and typings, every so often in the moment, and I'm proud of it. Tha year was 2010, and I'd recently graduated.

Book Synopsis Daydream Sequences in Hollywood Cinema since 1947 by : Michael Cribbs
Download or read book Daydream Sequences in Hollywood Cinema since 1947 written by Michael Cribbs and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-15 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daydream sequences provide viewers with important information regarding the desires, hopes, fears and psychological state of film protagonists. How, then, do cinematic daydreams stand with regard to classical Hollywood cinema? What do volitional fantasy sequences typically infer about the conscious mind? What do non-volitional cinematic daydreams commonly imply about the workings of the unconscious psyche and human will? Do filmed fantasies–intentionally or otherwise–reinforce cultural hegemony? Is daydreaming typically depicted as a detrimental or beneficial pastime in mainstream US cinema? Through investigating a corpus of Hollywood films containing fantasy scenes, this text answers these questions. This study uncovers the norms and key functions that daydreams serve in contemporary Hollywood films from cinematic, thematic, psychological and ideological perspectives. Whilst this text is aimed primarily at students and academics of film studies, it should also appeal to anyone with an interest in Hollywood cinema and/or daydreaming.

Download or read book Bread and Dreams written by Jonatha Ceely and published by Delacorte Press. This book was released on 2005-09-27 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A lovely book.” raved Anne Rivers Siddons about Mina, Jonatha Ceely’s luminous debut novel. “Suspenseful…evocative…meticulously researched,” praised the Boston Globe. Now Ceely returns to the tumultuous mid-nineteenth- century landscape and the world of an unforgettable Irish girl named Mina Pigot. Appealing to mind, sense, and emotion, Bread and Dreams is a sumptuous novel of love and food, loss, hunger, and hope. In 1848, a time when sail was giving way to the swift power of steam, Mina boards the sailing ship Victoria, headed for a new life in America. Orphaned and alone, under the protection of her friend Mr. Serle, Mina is, like the Victoria, at the mercy of the winds of fate. But what awaits both Mina and her protector in New York is a world rich with opportunity and danger. As Mr. Serle, a master chef, finds work in a bustling hotel, Mina tries the life of a salesgirl and then joins the downstairs kitchen of a wealthy family, where she soon proves her exquisite touch with food. But mysteries swirl all around the Westervelt home, and soon they engulf Mina too. As she tries to navigate the shoals and eddies of hidden affairs and powerful secrets, and as her feelings for the mysterious Mr. Serle subtly begin to shift, a remarkable series of events begins to unfold. For Mina, an extraordinary adventure begins, one that will take her far away from New York—and bring a sudden, surprising change of heart…and an unexpected gift of love and responsibility. From the gaslit streets of old New York to the cargo-crowded waterways of the Erie Canal, from one man fighting a personal battle of faith, duty, and desire to another scarred in body and soul by was, Bread and Dreams is filled with marvelously drawn characters and vivid images. And in the keenly observant, steadfast Mina Pigot we are given a narrator to treasure—and a brilliant guide into the heart and soul of America. PRAISE FOR JONATHA CEELY’S FIRST NOVEL MINA “Jonatha Ceely has caught perfectly the beauty, cruelty, and the very essence of one England about to transmute into another. A lovely book.”—Anne Rivers Siddons, author of Islands “Suspenseful…evocative…vivid.”—Boston Globe “Captures the period perfectly with vivid description and minute historical detail.”—Booklist “Absorbing and suspenseful…filled with vivid and surprising characters struggling to find their way amid the social turmoil of the time.” —Lauren Belfer, author of City of Light “The hardships of poverty and displacement are tempered with hope, determination and the will to survive in this well-researched debut historical novel. Ceely’s prose is graceful…and fans of the genre will appreciate [her] light touch and historical consistency. —Publishers Weekly

Download or read book The House written by Helen Pitt and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extraordinary story of the 20th century's most recognisable building, with new insights into the people involved and the controversy that surrounded its construction. Winner of the 2018 Walkley Book Award The best-loved building in Australia nearly didn't get off the drawing board. When it did, the lives of everyone involved in its construction were utterly changed: some for the better, many for the worse. Helen Pitt tells the stories of the people behind the magnificent white sails of the Sydney Opera House. From the famous conductor and state premier who conceived the project; to the two architects whose lives were so tragically intertwined; to the workers and engineers; to the people of Sydney, who were alternately beguiled and horrified as the drama unfolded over two decades. With access to diaries, letters, and classified records, as well as her own interviews with people involved in the project, Helen Pitt reveals the intimate back story of the building that turned Sydney into an international city. It is a tale worthy of Shakespeare himself. 'A drama-filled page turner' - Ita Buttrose AO OBE 'Helen Pitt tells us so much about the building of the Sydney Opera House we've never heard before' - Bob Carr, former Premier of NSW 'Australia in the seventies: mullets, platform shoes and, miraculously, the Opera House. At least we got one of them right. A great read.' - Amanda Keller, WSFM breakfast presenter
