Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Suggested Course of Study for County Training Schools for Negroes in the South The work in mathematics comprises courses in farm arith metic and arithmetic as applied in the industries. The work in English consists of the reading of interesting books, bulle tins, and selected articles bearing 011 current topics, especially in the world of industries. Supplementary reading consists largely of stories of adventure and stories that will develop the finer and nobler traits of character. A limited amount of grammar is taught, with special reference to the correct use of the language. The theme writing is based largely upon the reading and experience of the pupils. The science work is made up Of class and field work in agriculture, elementary physiology. Hygiene and sanitation, commercial geography, and general science History and civics give a more extended knowledge of the history of our nation than that given in the elementary course. State history is also taught, and as much of the government of nation and state and local community as will interest the pupil in the requirements for citizenship. In addition to this, race pride is developed by giving a course in the history of the Negro race. All work in agriculture should emphasize at least three things. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schooling the New South deftly combines social and political history, gender studies, and African American history into a story of educational reform. James Leloudis recreates North Carolina's classrooms as they existed at the turn of the century and explores the wide-ranging social and psychological implications of the transition from old-fashioned common schools to modern graded schools. He argues that this critical change in methods of instruction both reflected and guided the transformation of the American South. According to Leloudis, architects of the New South embraced the public school as an institution capable of remodeling their world according to the principles of free labor and market exchange. By altering habits of learning, they hoped to instill in students a vision of life that valued individual ambition and enterprise above the familiar relations of family, church, and community. Their efforts eventually created both a social and a pedagogical revolution, says Leloudis. Public schools became what they are today--the primary institution responsible for the socialization of children and therefore the principal battleground for society's conflicts over race, class, and gender. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1864 Alida and Calvin Clark, two abolitionist members of the Religious Society of Friends from Indiana, went on a mission trip to Helena, Arkansas. The Clarks had come to render temporary relief to displaced war orphans but instead found a lifelong calling. During their time in Arkansas, they started the school that became Southland College, which was the first institution of higher education for blacks west of the Mississippi, and they set up the first predominately black monthly meeting of the Religious Society of Friends in North America. Their progressive racial vision was continued by a succession of midwestern Quakers willing to endure the primitive conditions and social isolation of their work and to overcome the persistent challenges of economic adversity, social strife, and natural disaster. Southland’s survival through six difficult and sometimes dangerous decades reflects both the continuing missionary zeal of the Clarks and their successors as well as the dedication of the black Arkansans who sought dignity and hope at a time when these were rare commodities for African Americans in Arkansas.
