Irving Fisher says in his introduction that "the armies of peace have a nobler kind of work to do than the armies of war and their work often requires as much courage and self sacrifice, yet they do not fascinate as war fascinates for the reason that they are, as Mr. MacKaye says, drab." As he points out they have no bright uniforms, flags, ballads, brass bands or other forms of dramatic interpretation.
