Various thermal and thermomechanical strategies have been proposed to regulate the geometrical arrangement of alpha + beta phases and texture of the alpha phase in an effort to impart the microstructure with concurrent strengthening and toughening. This study explores two potential methods of achieving mechanical enhancement. The first involves the substitution of molybdenum for a portion of vanadium in Ti-64 (alpha + beta, 6.0 Al, 4.0 V weight %, balance Ti), thereby creating a new alloy, termed Ti-639 (alpha + beta, 6.5 Al, 1.7 Mo, 1.7 V, 0.3C, 0.19O, 0.3 Si weight %, balance Ti). Electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD)and transmission electron microscopy are used to study the preservation of the as-received microstructure of TIMETAL 639, owing to the low diffusivity of molybdenum. EBSD texture analysis of solution heat treated TIMETAL 639 shows a marked effect of beta phase on the recrystallization of new globular alpha grains within preexistent colonies, leading to the generation of a distinct depleted bimodal microstructure. Quasi-static compression mechanical testing indicates a measurable increase in mechanical response of the depleted bimodal microstructure,about 90MPa higheryield, with a 6% higher strain at failure, when compared to identically heat treated Ti-64 samples. This alloy design strategy enhances the performance of alpha + beta titanium alloys while foregoing additional prolonged aging heat treatments associated with Ti-64.The second method involves a processing strategy to impart near-net shape structureswith ultra-fine grain microstructures without resorting to severe mechanical deformation. The proposed strategy relies on utilizing a cyclic rapid heat treatment (CRHT) process to generate refined martensitic microstructures in aerospace grade Ti-64. Analysis of resultant microstructures using EBSDreveals trends in microstructure refinement during successive CRHT iterations. For the given heat treatment parameters, three CRHT cycles yielded an optimum microstructure refinement, by effectively harnessing discontinuous dynamic recrystallization,while diminishing the occurrence of dynamic recovery and continuous dynamic recrystallization.

Book excerpt: The effect of alpha/beta solution temperature and cooling rate on the evolution of microstructure during the heat treatment of Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo-0.1Si (Ti6242Si) with a partially-spheroidized starting microstructure of equiaxed + remnant lamellar alpha was established. Experiments comprising induction heating to a peak temperature of 971 or 982 degrees C followed by cooling at a rate of 11 or 42 degrees C/min revealed that the volume fraction of the equiaxed alpha grew much more rapidly than the lamellar constituent. These results were explained semi-quantitatively using simple diffusion analyses of the growth of either spherical or elliptical particles, taking into account the soft-impingement of the concentration fields. Despite the much lower diffusivity of molybdenum, which appears to control the growth of primary alpha in Ti6242Si, the similarity of the overall kinetics compared to those measured previously for Ti-6Al-4V was explained on the basis of the higher supersaturations developed during cooldown in the present alloy.

Book excerpt: Rapid Heat Treatment (RHT) of commercial titanium alloys is a promising novel technology ensuring a high level of mechanical properties as well as high cost efficiency of processing. One of the significant advantages of RHT is related to the possibility of employing heating to temperatures in the single-phase beta field. By this means, the technique can be used to obtain fully lamellar intragrain microstructures favorable for high creep resistance and fracture toughness with relatively small or moderate size beta-grains. Such microstructures give rise to good tensile ductility and fatigue properties, comparable to those of equiaxed or bimodal microstructures. Therefore, fully lamellar microstructures with a controlled beta grain size of around 100 micrometers are a feasible way to balance the tensile, fatigue, and creep properties of titanium alloys. With direct resistance heating, these microstructures and the corresponding properties can be produced throughout the part uniformly. With induction heating, gradient type microstructures can be produced in which the properties of surface and core volumes of the heat-treated part are selectively controlled depending on the intended service application. In either case, an understanding of beta grain growth behavior during continuous, rapid heating is the key point. Thus, the goal of this investigation was to establish the temperature dependence of beta-grain size and its dependence on crystallographic texture for the alpha/beta alloy Ti-6A1-4V. The principal variables to be investigated include processing history, heating rate, and method of rapid heating (direct resistance or induction) in order to provide an explanation of beta-grain growth mechanism during continuous rapid heating. As a final output of this effort, practical recommendations for choosing RHT parameters to ensure optimized balance of mechanical properties will be developed.

Cyclic softening occurs initially (up to approximately 100 cycles) in all alloys and conditions tested. Such softening is interpreted in terms of dislocation dynamics in which the combination of an increasing mobile dislocation density, high flow (friction) stress, and low work hardening capacity causes softening. After approximately 100 cycles, cyclic stability (i.e., the saturation of the peak stress to a constant value) occurs in all conditions of the Beta C and Ti-8823 alloys and in the overaged and a thermomechanically treated condition of the Ti-V-Si alloy. However, the Ti-V-Si alloy shows cyclic instability when tested in the solution-treated or peak hardness conditions. Bauschinger strain data and other observations indicate that the mobile dislocations predominantly shear the second phase particles in all but the overaged Ti-V-Si alloy. Thus the combination of particle shearing and the degradation of the particle strength as a result of repeated shearing is interpreted to be the cause of cyclic instabilities and continued softening. Book excerpt: Rapid industrial growth and advances in the domains of engineering and related technologies during the last fifty years have led to the extensive use of traditional metals and their alloy counterparts. Titanium is one such metal which has gained wide popularity in the aerospace and defense related applications owing to a wide range of impressive mechanical properties like excellent specific strength ([sigma]UTS/[rho]), stiffness, corrosion and erosion resistance, fracture toughness and capability to withstand significant temperature variations. Two materials, namely commercial purity titanium (Grade 2), referred to henceforth as Ti-CP (Grade 2) and the "work-horse" alloy Ti-6Al-4V have been chosen for this research study. The intrinsic influence of material composition and test specimen orientation on the tensile and fatigue behavior for both Ti-CP (Grade 2) and Ti-6Al-4V have been discussed. Samples of both Ti-CP (Grade 2) and Ti-6Al-4V were prepared from the as-provided plate stock along both the longitudinal and transverse orientations. The specimens were then deformed to failure in uniaxial tension for the tensile tests and cyclically deformed at different values of maximum stress at constant load ratio of 0.1 for the high cycle fatigue tests. The microstructure, tensile properties, resultant fracture behavior of the two materials is presented in the light of results obtained from the uniaxial tensile tests. The conjoint influence of intrinsic microstructural features, nature of loading and specimen properties on the tensile properties is discussed. Also, the macroscopic fracture mode, the intrinsic features on the fatigue fracture surface and the role of applied stress-microstructural feature interactions in governing failure for the cyclic fatigue properties for both the materials under study Ti-CP (Grade 2) and the "work-horse" alloy Ti-6Al-4V have been discussed in detail. Careful study of the microstructure for Ti-CP (Grade 2) material at a low magnification revealed the primary alpha grains to be intermingled with small pockets of beta grains. Observation at the higher allowable magnifications of the optical microscope revealed very fine alpha phase lamellae located within the beta grain. The microhardness and macrohardness measurements were consistent through the sheet specimen for Ti-CP (Grade 2) and slightly lower compared to Ti-6Al-4V. However, the macrohardness was marginally higher than the microhardness resulting from the presence of a large volume fraction of the soft alpha phase. The hardness values when plotted reveal marginal spatial variability. Tensile fracture of Ti-CP (Grade 2) was at an inclination to the far field tensile stress axis for both longitudinal and transverse orientations. The overload region revealed a combination of fine microscopic cracks, microscopic voids of varying size and randomly distributed through the surface, and a large population of shallow dimples, features reminiscent of locally brittle and ductile failure mechanisms. The maximum stress ([sigma]maximum) versus fatigue life (Nf) characteristics shown by this material is quite different from those non-ferrous metals that exhibit a well-defined endurance limit. When compared at equal values of maximum stress at a load ratio of 0.1, the fatigue life of the transverse specimen is noticeably greater than the longitudinal counterpart. At equivalent values of maximum elastic strain, the transverse specimens revealed noticeably improved fatigue life as compared one-on-one to the longitudinal counterparts. Careful observations of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy microstructure over a range of magnifications spanning very low to high magnification revealed a duplex microstructure consisting of the near equiaxed alpha and transformed beta phases. The primary near equiaxed shaped alpha grains (light in color) was well distributed in a lamellar matrix with transformed beta (dark in color). The microhardness and macrohardness values recorded for the Ti-6Al-4V alloy reveal it to be harder than the commercially pure (Grade 2) material. However, for the Ti-6Al-4V alloy the microhardness is noticeably higher than the corresponding macrohardness value that can be ascribed to the presence of a population of processing-related artifacts and the hard beta-phase. Tensile fracture of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy was macroscopically rough and essentially normal to the far field stress axis for the longitudinal orientation and cup-and-cone morphology for the transverse orientation. However, microscopically, the surface was rough and covered with a population of macroscopic and fine microscopic cracks, voids of varying size, a population of shallow dimples of varying size and shape, features reminiscent of locally brittle and ductile failure mechanisms. When compared at equal values of maximum stress at a load ratio of 0.1, there is a marginal to no influence of microstructure on high cycle fatigue life of both orientations of the alloy.

The increase in coarsening rate with superimposed deformation was attributed to the enhancement of diffusion by dislocations generated in the softer beta phase.
