Book excerpt: Despite the size, complexity and importance of the construction industry, there has been little study to date which focuses on the challenge of drawing reliable conclusions from the available data. The accuracy of industry reports has an impact on government policy, the direction and outcomes of research and the practices of construction firms, so confusion in this area can have far reaching consequences. In response to this, Measuring Construction looks at fundamental economic theories and concepts with respect to the construction industry, and explains their merits and shortcomings, sometimes by looking at real life examples. Drawing on current research the contributors tackle: industry performance productivity measurement construction in national accounts comparing international construction costs and prices comparing international productivity The scope of the book is international, using data and publications from four continents, and tackling head on the difficulties arising from measuring construction. By addressing problems that arise everywhere from individual project documentation, right up to national industrial accounts, this much-needed book can have an impact at every level of the industry. It is essential reading for postgraduate construction students and researchers, students of industrial economics, construction economists and policy-makers.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Construction productivity improvement is a key concern for construction companies and the industry. Productivity in construction is a complex issue because: (1) it is influenced by multiple factors interactively; and (2) it is measured in different forms and at different levels of detail for different purposes. This objective of this research is to develop an internal Benchmarking and Metrics (BM&M) model for industrial construction enterprises to help them understand and implement mechanisms for continuously improving construction productivity. Processes are developed in the model for: 1. Measuring and reporting craft labour productivity performance in a consistent form for the purposes of internal benchmarking and comparison with a selected third-party benchmark, 2. Examining productivity influencing factors in two categories with respect to construction environment factors and construction practices implementation, 3. Establishing a productivity performance evaluation model to understand the mechanisms by which the environment factors and construction practices impact construction productivity, and 4. Conducting strategic gaps analysis of construction practices implementation within a company aimed at achieving “best in class” and continuous improvement. System functions in the model are validated through functional demonstration by applying statistical analysis on data collected by the designed benchmarking process and metrics from an industrial construction company. It is concluded that the model developed can be effectively used to understand the impact of practices implementation levels on construction productivity.

Book excerpt: R&D Investment and Impact in the Global Construction Industry brings together contributions from leading industry researchers in a diverse group of countries to investigate the role of research and development (R&D) in the construction industry. Investment in R&D is a proven factor in economic growth, and helps develop a more productive and innovative industry. This book explores how policy makers and industry leaders can better target future investment; and how industry and researchers can manage their efforts to improve productivity whilst addressing the environmental and social needs of their communities. Case studies present projects where R&D ideas funded by both the private and public sectors have been translated from research into practice or policy, and examine drivers, successes and barriers to the delivery of R&D in industry. Based on research from members of the CIB Task Group 85 (R&D Investment and Impact) and concluding with key insights for maximising the impact of R&D in the future, the book holds valuable lessons for practitioners, policy makers and researchers across the international construction industry.

Book excerpt: Written by Dr. Robert Camp, universally regarded as the founding father of the benchmark process, this bestseller is quite simply the definitive reference on the topic. Camp guides readers through the historic ten-step benchmarking process that he developed while at Xerox. This process is credited with reviving that company when it was floundering in 1979. Camp presents other examples of the process, including its dramatic application to L.L. Bean. He uses these examples to show managers how to relate benchmarking to their own circumstances and then provides them with expert strategy and tips so that they can efficiently and easily launch their own quest for best performance.
