Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Verbs: Compounded With Aus Ein Etc; As Contrasted With Those Compounded With Heraus, Hinaus, Herein, Hinein, Etc The following study, which was undertaken at the suggestion of Professor George Hempl, is meant as a contribution to lexicography in general, and in particular to that branch of it coming under the head of semasiology. While the investigation is based on a certain group of verbal compounds, word-composition as such is treated only in so far as it has a direct bearing on the matter in hand. I present my material and the deductions drawn from it in the hope that it may add to the knowledge of some of the principles underlying semantic changes in language. Only five separable prefixes as elements of compound verbs are considered. Others will be treated at a future time. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to Professor William A. Cooper, who in the absence of Professor Hempl gave me unstintingly of his time and advice and who was ever ready to discuss with me all problems arising, of which there are many in a field still comparatively new.
