Book excerpt: Mathematics is a critical filter in an increasingly technological society, but many students have an abundance of anxiety toward mathematics. Research shows that this anxiety toward mathematics or confidence in mathematics may be related to a student's gender or age in addition to a number of other factors. In order to alleviate this anxiety, or increase confidence, we need to understand the contributing factors. This study examined the mathematical confidence or anxiety of male and female students in fifth, eighth, and eleventh grade. Each student in the study completed a survey about mathematical confidence and anxiety in order to determine a score for mathematical confidence and anxiety. The survey also collected information about a student's grade, gender, and average for their mathematics class. The results of this study show that there is no significant difference in mathematics confidence or anxiety scores for the fifth or eleventh grade students or the confidence scores of the eighth grade students, but there was a significant difference in the anxiety scores of the eighth students with girls having higher anxiety toward mathematics. The results also show that gender and grade average in the current mathematics course are significant predictors for mathematics anxiety scores while only some grade averages were significant predictors for mathematics confidence scores. A student's age was not a significant predictor for either mathematical anxiety or confidence.

The No Child Left Behind Act mandated that by school year 2013-2014, all students in public schools across the nation are to perform at the proficient level or higher in math. The specific problem addressed in the present study was low measures of students' math achievement in one Mississippi school district. Prior research suggested that math anxiety was a major factor that influenced students' math performances. Hypothesis 1 for this study stated there is a statistically significant negative relationship between seventh grade students' math anxiety scores and their math achievement scores. Hypothesis 2 stated there is not a statistically significant difference in measures of math anxiety between 7th grade boys and girls. Hypothesis 3 stated there is not a statistically significant difference in measures of math anxiety between Black and White 7th grade students. To test hypothesis 1, a correlation coefficient was computed using the Pearson Product-Moment Coefficient, also known as Pearson r. To test hypotheses 2 and 3, a t-Test was used to determine whether differences between the means for math anxiety for the two samples were significant. The results of this study indicate that math anxiety and math achievement are negatively related. As math anxiety increased, measures of math achievement decreased. The results of this study also suggest that math anxiety is a general concern for all students, in that there were no differences in measures of math anxiety between boys and girls or Black students and White students. It is very important that teachers take the time to identify students who have math anxiety so they can assist the students by implementing strategies and techniques to eliminate math anxiety for those students who may benefit with higher math achievement.

Understanding more about potential indicators or predictors of math anxiety at a young age may help alleviate some of the impacts math anxiety has on mathematics achievement throughout life. This study considered the relationships between mathematics anxiety, multiplication fact fluency, math problem solving ability, math confidence, prior achievement, and demographic variables of fourth grade students. Fourth grade students at two suburban elementary schools in North Georgia were surveyed about their math anxiety using the Math Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC). Math confidence was measured by a subscale of the Attitudes toward Math Inventory (ATMI). They also demonstrated their multiplication fact fluency and problem solving fluency using grade level monitoring probes. The results of the study were used to specifically determine if multiplication fact fluency has a predictive relationship with mathematics anxiety.
