Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984, the field of research on teaching had expanded dramatically in the 15 years covered by this bibliography, 1965 to 1980. The expansion had included studies conducted for many purposes. This bibliography contains relevant citations to the research which has been conducted for the purposes of increasing our understanding of the science, art and craft of teaching. The existence of research publications has been documented with relevant reference information and brief annotations; there has been no attempt to evaluate the quality of the studies. A brief perusal of the bibliography provides an indication of the range of topics addressed by these studies and also of the variety of studies within a single topic.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problem. Unless students are able to self-monitor, self-assess, and self-regulate their behavior, there is little likelihood that they can successfully transfer appropriate behaviors to different academic and social situations. Students must develop the skills to internally monitor what they say, how they act, and how they learn. This study addresses the need for an approach to dealing with student behavior that cultivates a learning environment in which students can experience an increase in achievement and gain the skills necessary to self-monitor and regulate their academic and social behavior. Purpose. The purpose of the study was to explore relationships among teachers' pupil control ideology, teachers' pupil control behavior, students' self-regulating behaviors, and students' achievement. Six specific research questions were developed for study: (1) What is the relationship between teachers' pupil control ideology and achievement, as measured by the MMAT, for elementary students in the intermediate grades (3-5)? (2) What is the relationship between teachers' pupil control behavior and achievement, as measured by the MMAT, for elementary students in the intermediate grades (3-5)? (3) What is the relationship between teachers' pupil control ideology and their pupil control behavior? (4) What is the relationship between teachers' pupil control ideology and students' self-regulating behaviors? (5) What is the relationship between teachers' pupil control behavior and students' self-regulating behaviors? (6) What is the relationship between students' self-regulating behaviors and their achievement, as measured by the MMAT? Procedures. The subjects studied included 40 teachers and 880 students in four elementary schools in a suburban public school district in the Kansas City Metropolitan area. Teachers completed the Pupil Control Ideology Form. Each student in the 40 classrooms completed the Pupil Control Behavior Form and a questionnaire on self-regulating behaviors. Using product moment correlation coefficient application, six hypotheses designed to address the research questions were tested for significance at the.05 and.01 level. Results. A significant relationship was found between teachers' pupil control ideology and teachers' pupil control behavior, which supports the results of an earlier study (Helsel & Willower, 1974). In addition, a significant relationship was found between teachers' pupil control behavior and students' self-regulating behaviors. This may suggest that in classrooms where the teacher behavior toward pupil control (discipline) is more humanistic, students are more likely to use self-regulating behaviors. It may also suggest that in classrooms where students are less likely to use self-regulating behaviors, the teacher behavior toward pupil control is more custodial. However, there was no significant relationship found between: teachers' pupil control ideology and student achievement; teachers' pupil control behavior and student achievement; teachers' pupil control ideology and students' self-regulating behaviors; or students' self-regulating behaviors and student achievement.

Book excerpt: Teachers’ attitudes have been a subject of study and interest for many years. Originally published in 1986, this bibliography attempts to review the large field of research between the years 1965 and 1984. To identify all the sources of information, and to list documents that discuss research on teachers’ attitudes. It does not include an assessment of the quality of the research reported in the listed documents, however, the value is in its comprehensiveness. Users of the bibliography can locate the listed studies and then evaluate the studies using criteria relevant to their individual purposes.

Book excerpt: The need for more inclusive studies investigating the effectiveness of the dynamic properties of the school characterizing teacher-teacher, teacher- administrator, and teacher-student interactions, has never been more critical than now. For its survival, development, and growth, every school must meet its instrumental and expressive needs, which among others subsists in its openness and health, and humanistic pupil control ideology, the subjects of this book's investigation. This book offers climate and pupil control ideology as pliable routes to schools' effectiveness than socioeconomic status, which is not so supple. It proposes workable alternatives to students' academic achievements and raises issues about playing nice with students and schools' discipline.

Book excerpt: While socioeconomic status does affects students' success, both in academics and in future status in adult life, it does not have to be the only deciding factor. In his study, Alternate Route to School Effectiveness and Student Achievement, Dr. Patrick Chudi Okafor discusses the need to enhance school climate as an alternate to socioeconomic status in promoting students' success. He also investigates the climate in New York City public schools as the means of schools' survival, development, and growth, as it affects both school effectiveness and student academic achievement. He further considers schools, teachers, parents, communities, and governments with respect to their roles in students' academic development and growth. These considerations, among others, led Dr. Okafor to offer solutions to the issue of failure associated with low socioeconomic status at a time when more children are falling within this bracket and the gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen. A quality learning environment presents a strong stimulus for societal change, development, and growth. By basing the overarching framework of his study on openness of the school and family systems, Dr. Okafor builds on the idea behind the saying, "It takes a village to raise a child". The academic relationship between the home and the school must be improved to guarantee sustainable student academic performance and "the home climate" is a major contributor to what children bring to school, just as "the school climate" is a major determinant to how it is transformed.
