Book excerpt: This study on Hispanic females (HF) in a two-year community college setting was guided by two research questions. To what extent do persister and non-persister Hispanic female students differ on each of the following 14 selected variables found in Bean and Eaton's (2000) Psychological Model of College Student Retention: 1) age, 2) marital status, 3) employment, 4) household income, 5) number of children, 6) level of planned education, 7) enrollment status, 8) generational status, 9) financial aid assistance, 10) semester hours completed, 11) self-efficacy, 12) motivational goals, 13) institutional commitment, and 14) parental influence? Secondly, do persisters and non-persisters differ in their first semester course-taking patterns and completion rates? The research design used in this study was a non-experimental, quantitative, survey design. A two-part questionnaire was employed to collect background data and information on psychosocial variables. The sample consisted of 424 students of which 124 (29.3%) responded. Of the 124 responders, 88 (71%) were classified as persisters and 36 (29%) were non-persisters. For Research Question 1, chi-square analysis and t-tests were used to analyze the differences between persisters and non-persisters. For Research Question 2, descriptive analyses were employed to provide a profile of the differences in first-semester course-taking patterns and completion rates. This study found that HF persisters differed significantly from HF non-persisters on five background and two psychosocial variables, with persisters tending to be: 1) single, 2) unemployed, 3) more interested in obtaining a bachelor's degree, 4) first in their families to attend college, 5) more influenced by their parents to pursue educational goals, 6) more motivated, and 7) more committed to their institution. Findings related to Research Question 2 showed that HF persisters out performed HF non-persisters as follows: (1) 73% completed their mathematics course compared to 42%, (2) 88% completed an English course compared to 59%, (3) 88% completed college level courses compared to 38%, and (4) only 1.1% withdrew of failed all their classes compared to 16.7%. This study provides suggestions as to how colleges with large enrollments of HF students could work with these students and their parents before and after they first enroll and come on campus. Recommendations are made for improving current advising systems and ford reviewing HF academic, social, and psychological progress.

Book excerpt: Previous research has noted the importance of investigating contextual factors and their effect on non-persistence (Gloria, 1997; Gloria & Ho, 2003; Gloria & Robinson Kurpius, 2001) but has not investigated their effects on academic achievement. The current study provides support for including psychosocialcultural (PSC) factors and the PSC framework (Gloria & Rodriguez, 2000) in research with Mexican American college students and specifically in the area of understanding the many factors that affect GPA. The current study examined the relationship between the variables of ethnic identity, college course self-efficacy, social support of family and friends, cultural congruity and university environment and the degree to which they predict GPA. Participants of the study consisted of 100 Mexican American undergraduate college students attending a Hispanic-serving university in the southwest. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire and the University Environment Scale (UES; Gloria & Robinson, 1996), College Self-Efficacy Inventory (CSEI: Solberg, O'Brien, Kennel, & Davis, 1993), Perceived Social Support from Family and Friends (PSSFa & PSSFr: Procidano & Heller, 1983), Ethnic identity Scale (EIS; UmaƱa-Taylor, Yazedjian & Bamaca-Gomez, 2004) and Cultural Congruity Scale (CCS: Gloria & Robinson Kurpius, 1996) online. The hierarchical regression model used to predict GPA was statistically significant, with 19% of the variance in GPA accounted for (R2 = .19, F = 2.71, p = .01). In the first step of the hierarchical regression, college self-efficacy was a significant predictor, accounting for 5% of the variance in GPA (R2 = .05, F = 5.45, p = .02). Exploratory analyses showed correlations between GPA and CSEI course scale (r = .23, p

Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Researchers have examined factors that affect persistence for traditional-aged students with research focusing on quantitative studies that fail to acknowledge the individual experiences of persistence. Likewise, there is minimal research on Latino/a adult students and their experiences with persistence at community colleges. This dissertation study examined the Latino/a adult student at the community college to gain a better understanding of their lived experiences of persistence. This study took place at an urban, two-year institution in south Texas that has a high number of Hispanic or Latino/a students and a low number of adult students. For this study, I examined the following overarching research question: Looking through the lens of Latino/a adult students, what explains the phenomenon of their persistence at the community college? This study utilized a phenomenological, qualitative approach to explore the overarching question. The study followed a phenomenological methodology in order to focus on the lived experiences of the participants and to further explore the phenomenon of persistence. Two semi-structured interviews and a critical incident reflection were used to gather data from the participants. The themes that emerged from the data analysis were the following: the past will not define my future, moving into higher education, finding my place in higher education, aiming for a better life, what matters to me, making connections, and looking into a mirror. Sub-themes were identified for each of these themes as well, and study findings were interpreted in light of existing research literature and the study's conceptual framework encompassing Schlossberg's Transition Theory (1981) and Yosso's theory of Community Cultural Wealth (2005). The study adds to the body of literature on Latino/a adult students and their persistence and also provides implications for practice for practitioners in the field of higher education.

Offering innovative approaches to understand the asset-based contributions of Latinx/a/o students and the communities they come from, this book showcases scholars from various disciplines, including, psychology, sociology, higher education, history, gender studies, and beyond. Chapter authors argue that various forms of knowledge and culturally relevant methodologies can help advance and promote the success and navigation of Latinx/a/o students. The contributors of this book challenge the deficit framing often found in higher education, and expand conceptualizations, theories, and methodologies used in the study of Latinx/a/o student populations to incorporate AfroLatinx/a/o perspectives, center Central American students in research, and bring Undocumented Critical Theory into the conversation. This important work provides a guide for higher education and student affairs scholars and practitioners, helping create knowledge to better understand Latinx/a/o student populations in higher education.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative collective case study was to examine the sociocultural and gender role expectation factors that contributed to the success of 10 Latina/Hispanic female high school graduates now attending a large university in the Midwest. Additionally, the study investigated the characteristics of resilience and persistence that helped these women continue their pursuit of higher education in spite of the challenges they faced. The participants in this study were identified as recent immigrants from Mexico or Mexican-Americans born in the United States of Mexican immigrant parents. All of these respondents graduated from a midwestern K-12 public school system and are now attending a large Midwestern university. This study used a qualitative paradigm and open-ended, in-depth interviews for data collection. The 17 question interview focused on the areas of sociocultural backgrounds, resilience/persistence factors, and gender role expectations. Demographic data about the participants' life histories and educational experiences were collected during the 90-minute interviews. Findings in the study indicated that Latinas are faced with many conflicts. They have specific gender role expectations placed on them and are limited by cultural rules and norms. Along with these conflicts they learn to build resilience/persistence attributes to help them succeed in their academic careers. The seven factors that contributed to the lived experiences and factors of resilience/persistence of Latina/Hispanic female academic success included: 1) lived discrimination; 2) the need to obtain an education that would lead to a better life; 3) active involvement in extracurricular activities in school; 4) strict and protective parents; 5) positive role models from family and other Latinas; 6) traumatic life experiences; 7) and strong familial/parental support. Additionally, the study also revealed six more contributing factors to the sociocultural and gender role expectations and pressures that impact the success of Latina/Hispanic female students in a K-12 public school system. Those factors included traditional Hispanic households, living in two worlds, traditional gender role expectations, independence from family, transference of parental gender role expectations, and the behavioral expectations for Latinas. The study offers recommendations for future studies and implications for practice advising and encouraging Hispanic females to pursue their academic goals.
