Book excerpt: Feelings of apprehension and fear brought on by mathematical performance can affect correct mathematical application and can influence the achievement and future paths of individuals affected by it. In recent years, mathematics anxiety has become a subject of increasing interest both in educational and clinical settings. This ground-breaking collection presents theoretical, educational and psychophysiological perspectives on the widespread phenomenon of mathematics anxiety. Featuring contributions from leading international researchers, Mathematics Anxiety challenges preconceptions and clarifies several crucial areas of research, such as the distinction between mathematics anxiety from other forms of anxiety (i.e., general or test anxiety); the ways in which mathematics anxiety has been assessed (e.g. throughout self-report questionnaires or psychophysiological measures); the need to clarify the direction of the relationship between math anxiety and mathematics achievement (which causes which). Offering a revaluation of the negative connotations usually associated with mathematics anxiety and prompting avenues for future research, this book will be invaluable to academics and students in the field psychological and educational sciences, as well as teachers working with students who are struggling with mathematics anxiety

Book excerpt: Mathematical anxiety is a feeling of tension, apprehension or fear which arises when a person is faced with mathematical content. The negative consequences of mathematical anxiety are well-documented. Students with high levels of mathematical anxiety might underperform in important test situations, they tend to hold negative attitudes towards mathematics, and they are likely to opt out of elective mathematics courses, which also affects their career opportunities. Although at the university level many students do not continue to study mathematics, social science students are confronted with the fact that their disciplines involve learning about statistics - another potential source of anxiety for students who are uncomfortable with dealing with numerical content. Research on mathematical anxiety is a truly interdisciplinary field with contributions from educational, developmental, cognitive, social and neuroscience researchers. The current collection of papers demonstrates the diversity of the field, offering both new empirical contributions and reviews of existing studies. The contributors also outline future directions for this line of research.

Book excerpt: Mathematics is considered one of the basics of education, but many have difficulty learning it. It is estimated that 25% of four-year college students and 80% of community college students have some degree of math anxiety. Several studies have identified math teachers as one of the primary causes of math anxiety. The purpose of this study was to identify, analyze, and classify those math instructors' behaviors that are contributors to math anxiety. In short, what are the behaviors of a math instructor that leads to math anxiety? This study is phenomenological in nature with the goal of describing those behaviors. Only those students who have math anxiety as measured by the Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale (AMAS) were included. Furthermore, only the students who indicated negative math experiences with one or more teachers as being a prominent part of the reason for that anxiety were included. A total of 82 students had math anxiety that met the criteria established by this researcher and recorded responses of negative math experiences. After running those 82 responses through IBM SPSS modeler 18.2 Text Analysis, 11 categories eventually emerged along with a taxonomy that included the top four most common categories: Teaching disposition, Teaching methods, Didn't explain and Pace. These categories made up 81% of the responses students gave in the questionnaire for teacher's characteristics they felt had been instrumental in their developing math anxiety.

Research into pre-service teachers' mathematics anxiety has indicated a number of worthwhile strategies to help minimize its effect on the nervous learner. Of particular interest is the Thinking Classroom model. However, while the research is comprehensive on pre-service teachers, it is sparse when concerning middle-school aged children. I have implemented a number of these strategies into a middle-school program designed for anxious youth. The current study is an exploration into how the Thinking Classroom model helps students lower their anxiety surrounding mathematics. During the study, students were asked to create a written reflection piece called a Math Autobiography, given a MARS-R several times and then interviewed. While not all students exhibited a decrease in anxiety, most students reported at the end of the study that they felt their abilities had increased in mathematics and felt more positive about the subject.

Book excerpt: Pre-service primary (elementary) teachers' mathematics anxiety affects their engagement with and future teaching of mathematics. The study measured the range of mathematics anxiety in 219 pre-service teachers starting a teacher education course in an Australian university. They responded to the Revised Mathematics Anxiety Scale (RMARS) and a set of demographic questions. Age differences in anxiety were found to be significant, and relationships were found between the RMARS scores and students' self-perceptions of their current mathematics anxiety levels.
