Book excerpt: Colleges and universities face the major problem of how to make a university education meaningful in a global society. It is the thesis of this book that study abroad is one of the most powerful tools available for internationalizing the U.S. higher education curriculum. After an Introduction giving a general overview of the book, the study begins with four student case histories showing that an individual student's maturity and the extent of his or her immersion in the host country's culture are two key variables that determine to what extent study abroad affects the student. The next two chapters suggest first, that as they study abroad, students develop intellectually in three ways: (1) through language study; (2) through courses in the students' majors that offer new perspectives; and (3) through knowledge acquisition in broad, general areas: and second, that as they study abroad, students change in their perceptions of the host culture, their own culture, and global understanding. In chapter 5, a theoretical framework is proposed for understanding the effects of study abroad and the growth which results from it. The conclusion is reached that study abroad is not only a potentially powerful educational technique, but also that program design and participant selection can have significant effects upon outcome. Finally, a number of recommendations are offered whereby, it is believed, the effectiveness of study abroad programs in U.S. educational institutions can be increased and broadened. (LBG)

Book excerpt: This is the second of a series which the Institute of Research Overseas at Michigan State University is producing on the international programs of American universities. The authors highlight many insights that those involved in planning and evaluating current educational exchange programs should be kept in mind: programs should require significant intellectual effort; the impact of educational exchange is upon visiting scholars, not the host culture; Americans need to know a great deal more about other peoples and their cultures; benefits of educational exchanges increase as the student gains intellectual maturity and the ability to work independently; and at the professor level it would be better to cultivate and promote exchanges developing naturally among scholars. Attention to these points would greatly benefit designers of educational exchange recruitment campaigns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

Book excerpt: Higher education is in an unprecedented time of change and reform. To address these challenges, university leaders tend to focus on specific interventions and programs, but ignore the change processes and the contexts that would lead to success. Joining theory and practice, How Colleges Change unmasks problematic assumptions that change agents typically possess and provides research-based principles for approaching change. Framed by decades of research, this monumental book offers fresh insights into understanding, leading, and enacting change. Recognizing that internal and external conditions shape and frame change processes, Kezar presents an overarching practical framework that can be applied to any organizational challenge and context. How Colleges Change is a crucial resource for aspiring and practicing campus leaders, higher education practitioners, scholars, faculty, and staff who want to learn how to apply change strategies in their own institutions.
