Book excerpt: Universalisation of Elementary Education (UEE) has been recognised as a one of the important pre-conditions to socio-economic and political developments of any society; particularly it is so in a developing society. The Government of India, recognising UEE as a goal of national importance has been putting every effort to achieve it. The provisions contained in the Article 45 of the Constitution of India insist on providing Free and Compulsory Elementary Education to all children. It may be observed however, that the present understanding of compulsory education is limited to compulsory schooling with physical enrollment of the child instead of facilitating the child to develop his/her academic interests.

Book excerpt: "This paper describes the effect of mastery learning on test-taking performance and student attitudes. The study was conducted in two regular biology classes at a high school located in a suburb approximately thirty-five miles northwest of Chicago, Illinois. Data collection took place over three units totaling approximately ten school weeks ... It was found in this study that students scored significantly lower on, and studied significantly less for, the first test of a unit known in advance to be a mastery learning unit than on the first test (or only test in the case of unit 1) of a unit that was thought to be a traditional, one-test unit."--Author's abstract.

Book excerpt: There are many reasons to be curious about the way people learn, and the past several decades have seen an explosion of research that has important implications for individual learning, schooling, workforce training, and policy. In 2000, How People Learn: Brain, Mind, Experience, and School: Expanded Edition was published and its influence has been wide and deep. The report summarized insights on the nature of learning in school-aged children; described principles for the design of effective learning environments; and provided examples of how that could be implemented in the classroom. Since then, researchers have continued to investigate the nature of learning and have generated new findings related to the neurological processes involved in learning, individual and cultural variability related to learning, and educational technologies. In addition to expanding scientific understanding of the mechanisms of learning and how the brain adapts throughout the lifespan, there have been important discoveries about influences on learning, particularly sociocultural factors and the structure of learning environments. How People Learn II: Learners, Contexts, and Cultures provides a much-needed update incorporating insights gained from this research over the past decade. The book expands on the foundation laid out in the 2000 report and takes an in-depth look at the constellation of influences that affect individual learning. How People Learn II will become an indispensable resource to understand learning throughout the lifespan for educators of students and adults.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essential text unpacks major transformations in the study of learning and human development and provides evidence for how science can inform innovation in the design of settings, policies, practice, and research to enhance the life path, opportunity and prosperity of every child. The ideas presented provide researchers and educators with a rationale for focusing on the specific pathways and developmental patterns that may lead a specific child, with a specific family, school, and community, to prosper in school and in life. Expanding key published articles and expert commentary, the book explores a profound evolution in thinking that integrates findings from psychology with biology through sociology, education, law, and history with an emphasis on institutionalized inequities and disparate outcomes and how to address them. It points toward possible solutions through an understanding of and addressing the dynamic relations between a child and the contexts within which he or she lives, offering all researchers of human development and education a new way to understand and promote healthy development and learning for diverse, specific youth regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or history of adversity, challenge, or trauma. The book brings together scholars and practitioners from the biological/medical sciences, the social and behavioral sciences, educational science, and fields of law and social and educational policy. It provides an invaluable and unique resource for understanding the bases and status of the new science, and presents a roadmap for progress that will frame progress for at least the next decade and perhaps beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of mastery learning on sophomore level high school students enrolled in a regular level biology course. The study was conducted in April 1996 at Cary-Grove High School, part of Community High School District #155, Crystal Lake, Illinois. The students who participated generally ranked in the top 60th percentile of their class, and based upon this they were placed in this regular level course. The study assesses the effects of mastery learning in two different outcomes, student achievement and student affect. Student achievement was evaluated using a ninety-five question forced choice test that was written by the biology teaching staff at Cary-Grove as a part of the School Improvement Process requirements of the State of Illinois. The test was designed to align with both the goals of the state and the curriculum that has been implemented at Cary-Grove. Student affects was evaluated using a five question student survey that assessed students perception of the course, their attitude toward the subject that they were learning, how important they felt the subject was and how fairly they perceived their work as being evaluated. The results of this study indicated that the mastery learning approach did have a significant effect on the students who were being taught using the method. The test was divided into eleven different topics, and the students who were in the classes where the mastery approach was being used performed better in nine of the areas as opposed to the students who were in the classes where mastery learning had not been used. The results also indicated that mastery learning did appear to have a cumulative effect, with greater results being seen in the second semester topics as opposed to the first semester topics. Mastery learning also appeared to have a positive effect on student affect. The results of the survey found that the students who were taught using the mastery application reported more often than the students were not taught using mastery that they had control over their learning, that there were high expectations for their success, and that the subject they were learning was important."--Author's abstract.
