Book excerpt: The focus of this study was to examine the effects of an explicit word study approach on spelling achievement in kindergartners. More explicitly, to what extent do students benefit :from a developmentally appropriate word study approach to spelling instruction? This study analyzed the progress of 22 kindergartners in spelling development at a school in a low to middle class socioeconomic area in southern California. First, students were given a qualitative spelling inventory to determine group placement and developmental level. Next, the kindergartners received word study instruction for sixteen weeks based at their developmental level. At the end of the instruction period, a fmal qualitative spelling inventory was administered. The researcher compared the data and found that the majority of students achieved gains in spelling achievement and feature scores. The findings explore the importance of a word study approach in spelling instruction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spelling in the Elementary School: An Experimental and Statistical Investigation Whether perfection in spelling is so desirable or attainable as an ideal of instruction that it should continue to hold its pres ent exalted place in the popular consciousness and in the mind of the professional pedagogue, is another and important question Which will be given some attention later; but that it does hold such place is evidenced not only by such general considerations as have been just mentioned, but by matters of fact easily acces sible to any one sufficiently interested to inquire. The time actually devoted to special instruction in spelling, as given upon daily school programmes, ranges from ten minutes to an hour, the latter being more than one fifth of the available time for instruction, and the spelling lesson is almost invariably one of the staples for home study when such work is required of pupils. The great number of spelling books put forth each year by the publishers of text-books is another Significant index of the time, thought, energy, and money expended in meeting this demand of the schools. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to research the opinions of teachers who utilize phonics as part of their spelling instruction and teachers who do not incorporate phonics on how spelling impacts a student's writing scores. The research finding include answers to questions such as, 'What is the overall opinion about whether spelling effects writing?', 'Is there a difference of opinion between the opinions of teachers who do teach phonics and teachers who do not teach phonics as to whether student spelling affects student writing?', and 'What is the overall opinion about whether it is important for spelling to be taught in school?' The research data was collected via a nine item, anonymous electronic survey to three public school districts and one private school in Missouri. The data was analyzed using A Statistical Package, with the use of Microsoft Excel. Results indicate that there are some differences in opinion between teachers who do include phonics and teachers who do not. Further research is paramount in order to obtain a larger sample size, particularly in order to gain a better insight to the opinions of teachers who do not include phonics into spelling instruction.
