Book Synopsis HC 383 - The Standards System in the House of Commons by : Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Committee on Standards
Download or read book HC 383 - The Standards System in the House of Commons written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Committee on Standards and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2015 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 2013 three lay members became part of a new Committee on Standards. As a result of the lay members' reflections on the experience of their first year in office the Committee on Standards decided to undertake a comprehensive review of the standards system in the House of Commons. There has been a decline in public trust, not just in politics but in other institutions. The expenses scandal played a significant part in reducing public trust, and the Committee do not underestimate its impact. It still has an immense effect on how MPs' activities are seen and reported. The majority of MPs carry out their tasks without any questions raised about the propriety of their actions. The growth in constituency case work suggests that while the public may distrust MPs in general, in practice they are willing to bring individual MPs their problems. MPs have a complex and multi-faceted role, and one of the lessons of the last year has been that there is little understanding of what MPs do, the rules governing their conduct, and the ways in which those rules are enforced. This Report is intended to increase that understanding, as well as to propose improvements. This report sets out the range of functions that an MP undertakes. It describes the various aspects of MPs' work and the limitations of their role. It acknowledges MPs need the freedom to decide their priorities within a potentially infinite workload. The Committee believes self-regulation, with external input, is the appropriate system.

Download or read book The English Local Government System written by J. H. Warren and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1946, The English Local Government System has undoubtedly been one of the most successful introductory books on this subject. The purpose of this book is not so much to describe the various local government services, but rather to discuss the machinery and methods utilized in the provision of these services. It discusses crucial themes like business yardsticks; the constitutional setting; judicial control; the associations of local authorities; the financial basis; state grants and providing for capital expenditure; the local authority’s constitution; the impact of politics on administration; delegation of powers to committees; the need for reform; and central local relationships. This is an important historical reference work for students of public administration and British government and politics.

Book Synopsis Local Government in Britain Since Reorganisation by : Alan Alexander
Download or read book Local Government in Britain Since Reorganisation written by Alan Alexander and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, this book was the first comprehensive, critical assessment of the outcome of the controversial reorganisation of British local government outside London which took place between 1973 and 1975. The book deals with the new systems in England, Wales and Scotland, drawing upon the results of almost 100 in-depth interviews with leading members and officers from Shetland to Cornwall, from major cities to rural districts. Liaison between the tiers, the effects of corporate management, the spread of the office of chief executive, the increasing levels of partisanship and the changing face of central-local relations are examined on the basis of close observation and practical experience rather than theoretical preconceptions.

Book Synopsis The Reorganisation of British Local Government by : John Dearlove
Download or read book The Reorganisation of British Local Government written by John Dearlove and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1979-09-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was first published in 1979, just a few years after the Local Government Act of 1972 redrew the map of British local government. Local authorities were also encouraged to change their organization and methods of work; anxiety was expressed about finance, councillor 'calibre' and the credibility of the whole system itself; and neighbourhood councils and public participation in planning were introduced. John Dearlove's aim is to make sense of these changes and the discussion they generated. He does this by showing that both the official case for reorganization and the academic discussion of it have hindered their own understanding by uncritically accepting superficial traditional wisdoms which fail to reveal the concealed ideological positions behind reorganization. Thus, he aims to develop a truly political perspective on reorganisation which is rounded out and given greater depth by the insertion at appropriate points of comparative material drawn from American experience and studies.

Book Synopsis Education System Design by : Brian Hudson
Download or read book Education System Design written by Brian Hudson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights decisions governments have to make about their public education systems, the options they have before them and the consequences of their decisions. As well as covering issues such as values, curriculum, teacher training, structures and so on, the book addresses education planning for epidemics, pandemics and disasters. Education systems provide the foundations for the future wellbeing of every society, yet existing systems are a point of global concern. Education System Design is a response to debates in developing and developed countries about the characteristics of a high-quality national education service. It questions what makes a successful system of education. With chapters that draw on experience in education systems around the world, each one considers an element of a national education service and its role in providing a coherent and connected set of structures to ensure good education for all members of society. Key topics include: Existing education systems and what a future system might look like Inclusion and social justice Leadership and teacher education Policy options, and the consequences of policy changes This book suggests an education system be viewed as an ecosystem with interdependencies between many different components needing to be considered when change is contemplated. It is a vital book for any stakeholders in educational systems including students, teachers and senior leaders. It would be particularly useful to policy makers and those implementing policy changes.
