This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 932 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lucid, straightforward Preface of this Handbook by the two editors and the comprehenSIve perspec tives offered in the Introduction by one ofthem leave little for a Foreword to add. It is therefore limIted to two relevant but not intrinsically related points vis-a-vis research on marriage and the family in the interval since the fIrst Handbook (Christensen, 1964) appeared, namely: the impact on this research ofthe politicization of the New RIght! and of the Feminist Enlightenment beginning in the mid-sixties, about the time of the fIrst Handbook. In the late 1930s Willard Waller noted: "Fifty years or more ago about 1890, most people had the greatest respect for the institution called the family and wished to learn nothing whatever about it. . . . Everything that concerned the life of men and women and their children was shrouded from the light. Today much of that has been changed. Gone is the concealment of the way in which life begins, gone the irrational sanctity of the home. The aura of sentiment which once protected the family from discussion clings to it no more .... We wantto learn as much about it as we can and to understand it as thoroughly as possible, for there is a rising recognition in America that vast numbers of its families are sick-from internal frustrations and from external buffeting. We are engaged in the process of reconstructing our family institutions through criticism and discussion" (1938, pp. 3-4).

Book Synopsis Handbook of Classical Sociological Theory by : Seth Abrutyn
Download or read book Handbook of Classical Sociological Theory written by Seth Abrutyn and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first handbook focussing on classical social theory. It offers extensive discussions of debates, arguments, and discussions in classical theory and how they have informed contemporary sociological theory. The book pushes against the conventional classical theory pedagogy, which often focused on single theorists and their contributions, and looks at isolating themes capturing the essence of the interest of classical theorists that seem to have relevance to modern research questions and theoretical traditions. This book presents new approaches to thinking about theory in relationship to sociological methods.

Download or read book Readings in Child Socialization written by K. Danziger and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readings in Child Socialization reviews some of the most important findings in child socialization and covers topics ranging from achievement motivation and parental behavior to maternal retrospection, mother-infant interaction, and children's attitudes to theft. Interaction in families with a schizophrenic child is also explored, along with identification and imitation in children; the taking of adult roles in middle childhood; social origins of elaborated and restricted codes; and the problem of identification with the father. This book is comprised of 14 chapters and opens by discussing three currents of thought that stimulated the empirical investigation of socialization: the learning approach, the positivist tradition, and Sigmund Freud's ideas. The following chapters explore the child's learning of adult role behavior; the role of parents in the child's achievement motivation; and the effects of sex of the dominant parent on sex-role preference, identification, and imitation in children. The influence of marital integration on parent-child relations is also examined, along with the direction of effects in studies of socialization. This monograph will be a useful resource for sociologists, social scientists, and child psychologists.

Book Synopsis Classical Sociology by : Bryan S Turner
Download or read book Classical Sociology written by Bryan S Turner and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1999-10-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, one of the foremost sociologists of the present day, turns his gaze upon the key figures and seminal institutions in the rise of sociology. Turner examines the work of Karl Marx, Max Weber, Karl Mannheim, Georg Simmel, Emile Durkheim and Talcott Parsons to produce a rich and authoritative perspective on the classical tradition. He argues that classical sociology has developed on many fronts, including debates on the family, religion, the city, social stratification, generations and citizenship. The book defends classical perspectives as a living tradition for understanding contemporary social life and demonstrates how the classical tradition produces an agenda for contemporary sociology.
