Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to investigate African American college students' attitudes towards Asian Americans using The Scale of Ethnocultural Empathy (SEE), which was modified to target Asian Americans, the Attitudes towards Asians scale (ATA), and the Bogardus Social Distance Scale (SDS), which was also modified to target Asian Americans. Results of Confirmatory Factor Analyses (CFAs) on the Modified-SEE and ATA indicate that previously established factor structure models obtained from using the original scales were a poor fit to the new data. Results suggest that researchers who modify attitude scales to target specific groups should attend to the construct validity of the modified items. Results also underscore the importance of conducting CFAs when using scales that were validated on particular ethnic populations to assess new ethnic populations. Countering the resentment hypothesis, no relationship was found between endorsing model minority stereotypes and either perception of threat or empathy towards Asian Americans.

Book excerpt: Ten Chinese American and ten Japanese American students were interviewed individually and in a group setting to record their perceptions regarding conflicts between their Asian heritage and the American environment. This qualitative study recorded the conflicting perceptions which illustrate the difference between Asian American experiences and those of white Americans. The significant differences found were differentiation based on physiognomy, stereotyping based on generalizations of "model minority," and racism from negative perceptions of "those Orientals." But Asian American students also referred to a unique and beneficial position from American cultural influence combined with their Asian heritage. They acknowledged an "ability to see both sides $...$ the benefit of knowing two cultures." This study recorded accounts which describe the experiences of these situations in the voices of Chinese American and Japanese American university students. These descriptions produce a realistic picture of the current Asian American experience and provide an experiential expression through the interview transcripts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian Americans are the fastest-growing racial/ethnic group in the United States. Asians who have a diagnosis of mental illness are noted to present with severe psychiatric symptoms during inpatient hospitalization which can be resulted from barriers to mental health services or counseling. Stigma is an important barrier to recovery from any mental health disorders. There are limited studies in the United States examining attitudes toward mental illness among Asians. This grant proposal outlines a research study examining attitudes toward mental illness among Asian college students, potential grant funding, and plan for dissemination of the findings. This study is significant to nursing since increased knowledge is needed regarding the Asian American population and what their attitudes are towards the mentally ill. The study findings may better inform the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner how to engage and treat this population.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this popular book adds important new research on how racial stereotyping is gendered and sexualized. New interviews show that Asian American men feel emasculated in America’s male hierarchy. Women recount their experiences of being exoticized, subtly and otherwise, as sexual objects. The new data reveal how race, gender, and sexuality intersect in the lives of Asian Americans. The text retains all the features of the renowned first edition, which offered the first in-depth exploration of how Asian Americans experience and cope with everyday racism. The book depicts the “double consciousness” of many Asian Americans—experiencing racism but feeling the pressures to conform to popular images of their group as America’s highly achieving “model minority.” FEATURES OF THE SECOND EDITION
