Book excerpt: This thesis is a research study in comparative marital adjustment of women who combine the wife-mother role with teaching, and home women who fulfill the single role of homemaker. Fifty married couples were utilized as the samples. Controls of the study included age range of the women, length of marriage, education, number of children, class status; and for the teachers, years of teaching experience. Home women were so classified if they had not been employed outside the home since the birth of their first child. The couples were matched for socio-economic status. Teacher participants were secured from four school systems located in the area. Home women participants were secured through the aid of the Family Life Department of the Board of Education of Kansas City, Missouri. Twenty-four of the participants furnished leads for the additional twenty-six couples who participated. The couples generally were contacted in their home situation. The wife was given a standardized marital adjustment test and each couple was given a standardized personality test to determine to what extent personality traits affect marital adjustment. Interviews were conducted to determine the couples attitudes towards the wife's role. Results of the study: After controlling the sample through age, education, length of marriage and other factors enumerated above, I directed my analysis at the personality traits of the two groups. The results of the personality tests evidenced that such traits as neurotic tendency, dominance-submission and self-sufficiency of the husband and wife did not differentiate the two role groups in marital adjustment. Having held personality traits contstant, I compared the two groups for role differential and the present writer concluded that the role of the wife in a marital situation does not in itself affect her marital adjustment. That is, whether the wife is employed outside the home or whether she fulfills the tradiitonal role of home woman, her marital adjustment is not significantly different as a result. Possible limitations of the study: The sample utilized was small and not selected at random. Also the actual validity of the testing instruments is not known.

Marital adjustment refers to a state of accommodation which is achieved in different areas where conflict may exist. Marriage in India is thought to be an epitome of sacrifice, togetherness, belongingness, sharing and evolving . In the words of Tagore"Birds build their nests with straw. It matters little to them to leave their homes and go. But we build ours with our minds. That becomes an invisible shelter in all that we do, in our work, our reading, our thinking. Just as a cart makes grooves on its journey which we can feel in the swaying of our bodies, a mind involuntarily settles into grooves it makes with mind's eye. And we don't want to get out of them even when there is occasion for it."The topic for the present study establishes a relationship between marital adjustment and psychophysical well-being of the married couples. There were two major objectives of the present study. 1.To examine the extent of adjustment and well-being in case of single and dual career couples. 2.Relationship between the marital adjustment and psychophysical well-being for the single and dual career couples.

Book excerpt: Marriage is an antiquated practice, in spite of the fact that its importance may have changed all through reality. The word 'marriage' signifies a legitimate relationship between one man and one woman as a couple, and the word 'life partner' alludes just to an individual of the contrary sex who is a spouse or wife. As indicated by Vries. Marriage is more than adoration. Marriage comprises of a real existence of exertion and concern, felicitation and despairing, disease and wellbeing. It comprises of being youthful and getting to be old, managing little and enormous issues, adapting to inner and outer hardships and dangers and a great deal of days, weeks, months, and years are lived together and it takes a lot of patience. As per a new research published by Emily Dixon (2019), married people have better mental and physical health at older ages than unmarried people.

Book excerpt: The lucid, straightforward Preface of this Handbook by the two editors and the comprehenSIve perspec tives offered in the Introduction by one ofthem leave little for a Foreword to add. It is therefore limIted to two relevant but not intrinsically related points vis-a-vis research on marriage and the family in the interval since the fIrst Handbook (Christensen, 1964) appeared, namely: the impact on this research ofthe politicization of the New RIght! and of the Feminist Enlightenment beginning in the mid-sixties, about the time of the fIrst Handbook. In the late 1930s Willard Waller noted: "Fifty years or more ago about 1890, most people had the greatest respect for the institution called the family and wished to learn nothing whatever about it. . . . Everything that concerned the life of men and women and their children was shrouded from the light. Today much of that has been changed. Gone is the concealment of the way in which life begins, gone the irrational sanctity of the home. The aura of sentiment which once protected the family from discussion clings to it no more .... We wantto learn as much about it as we can and to understand it as thoroughly as possible, for there is a rising recognition in America that vast numbers of its families are sick-from internal frustrations and from external buffeting. We are engaged in the process of reconstructing our family institutions through criticism and discussion" (1938, pp. 3-4).

Book excerpt: Abstract: Recent studies have suggested that Americans work more hours today than ever before. Some scholars argue that long work hours have negative impacts on families. The increase in married women's labor force participation has been associated with an increase in the likelihood of marital dissolution. Do wives' higher hours of employment destabilize marriages? I draw on attachment, role strain, and ideological consistency arguments to develop specific hypotheses regarding this association, the conditions under which it may vary, and the processes through which it operates. Using wave 1 (1987-1988) and wave 2 (1992-1994) of the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH), I test whether there is a direct relationship between wives' hours of employment and the likelihood of marital dissolution, and whether the effect is moderated by the presence and age of children, husbands' hours of employment, and marital duration. I also test whether the relationship between wives' hours of employment and the likelihood of marital dissolution is contingent upon couples' gender ideology, and whether couples' marital happiness and marital conflict mediate this relationship. Limiting my sample to married primary respondents at wave 1 whose spouses were present and completed a questionnaire, and whose marital status at wave 2 could be ascertained, I construct couple-level measures of gender ideology, marital happiness, and marital conflict that capture consistency or conflict between spouses' views. I find a significant positive association between wives' hours of employment and the likelihood of marital dissolution. This effect does not significantly differ by the presence and age of children, husbands' hours of employment, or marital duration. Contrary to my expectations, this association is also not moderated by couples' gender ideology. However, this study strongly supports the hypothesis that wives' hours of employment leads to an increase in the likelihood of marital dissolution through a reduction in marital happiness and increase in marital conflict.
