Abstract: Abstract This dissertation adopts a qualitative approach to study the perception of six secondary teachers from two schools, with a similar background and history, of leadership in school-based management (SBM) schools. The focus of the research is to explore the views of the teachers on the changes in school administration and the structure of the school under SBM; the challenges, difficulties and skills of principals; and the leadership roles of principals under SBM. The study can supplement the limited number of researches on the roles of principals in SBM schools in Hong Kong and semi-structured interviews were conducted to obtain the information. As serving teachers now play increasingly important roles in schools and they work closely with their principals in administrative and educational matters, they can provide invaluable insight into the new roles of principals. My research has uncovered the perceptions of the teachers on leadership and the education reforms in the two schools that I studied. All the teachers confirmed that the roles of principals and senior teachers had changed under SBM and decision making had become a participative activity shared among various stakeholders. Principals and teachers need to trust one another and work collaboratively in an effective manner and schools have to develop their own unique culture. The findings of this study were limited to a description of the perception of six secondary teachers of two Hong Kong schools on the leadership roles of principals as well as some of the challenges and problems their principals encountered. To alleviate these increased demands, Principals utilize distributed leadership, relying on teacher leaders to assist in daily school functions and processes. Past studies provided insight into empowerment and how teachers are called upon to take on leadership roles within schools. The focus of this mixed methods study was to determine the perceptions of empowered teachers in successful Title 1 schools in an urban school system and if these empowered teachers are encouraged to take on teacher leader roles within their schools. Utilization of the School Participant Empowerment Scale survey created by Short and Rinehart (1992) established the quantitative analysis on the perceptions of teacher empowerment within this study. Qualitative analysis was used to reveal what specific teacher leader opportunities are presented to the empowered teacher participants within this study. This research investigation revealed teachers are empowered to take on teacher leader roles involving professional development, along with providing instructional guidance and support in an environment of encouragement and respect. However, teacher perceptions indicated the empowerment to lead instructionally is evident, while the participating teachers of this study are limited in large-scale capacity functions such as budgeting and scheduling within their schools.

Abstract: ABSTRACT OF Dissertation Entitled "School Based Management: A way to improve teacher performance in Hong Kong Government Schools" submitted by O, Sui-fong For the degree of Master of Education At the University of Hong Kong in August 2004 This study investigates whether teachers working in Government secondary schools have any differences in their performance and perceptions on school-based management (SBM) when compared with their colleagues working in the aided secondary schools. It further explores the feasibility of adopting school-based management on staffing in Hong Kong Government secondary schools. A quantitative study method was adopted, and the results show that teachers working in Government secondary schools have higher turn over rate, lower sense of efficacy and commitment to the schools than the teachers working in aided schools. Teachers in Government secondary schools have similar measurement on professional interests and perceptions on school-based management with those teachers from aided schools. Generally speaking, SBM has positive impact to the schools. Yet, the effects are far more significant on responsiveness and accountability, less on teachers' job satisfaction, teachers' ownership, commitment and performance. Many teachers in Government secondary schools considered school-based staffing system, which is adopted by most aided schools, as a way to improve teacher performance. They welcome the practice of school-based staffing system in government secondary schools. More research work is needed to investigate further development in the personnel domain of SBM of Government secondary schools and its effects on teacher performance. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Rigorous school accountability efforts in education have increased interest in factors that may contribute to positive learning environments for all participants in the educational process. The primary concept of interest of this study was that of collective efficacy, a mechanism of personal agency, espoused by Albert Bandura through Social Cognitive Theory. Collective efficacy, is defined as "a group's shared belief in its conjoint capabilities to organize and execute the courses of action required to produce given levels of attainments" (Bandura, 1997, p. 477). Teacher's perceptions of school environments and school leadership were explored relative to collective efficacy. Bandura (1997) has suggested that each of these factors (school environments, school leadership, and collective efficacy) may have a positive impact upon the educational process, yet empirical relationships among the three factors are not evidenced in the literature. This study was conducted with K-12 elementary school teachers at 17 school sites, utilizing three instruments measuring each factor: collective efficacy, leadership, and school environment. Instruments were disseminated electronically. A significant relationship was found among the factors in combined analysis, although multiple regression analysis of independent influence was significant only with environment in relationship to collective efficacy

For students that have been expelled from their district of residence, a wide achievement gap can be highly notable. Although there is no single solution that will entirely close the achievement gap, there are several solutions that can help narrow the problem. Effective instructional practices can be implemented in the classroom to help increase student engagement and achievement. Students attending Community Day Schools in this district of study have been expelled from their district of residence. Students experiencing increased behavior and academic needs result in low student success. The focus of this research is to examine how teachers in a Community Day School understand Project Based Learning components and their impacts on student engagement and achievement. A growing body of research indicates that this instructional strategy is successful in comprehensive K-12 school settings and can improve student engagement, motivation, and academic achievement. However, there is limited research on the impacts of Project Based Learning in alternative education placements. This study is significant because it will add to the limited research in alternative education placements. The methodology used in this research is a qualitative case study. To understand the impacts of Project Based Learning in an alternative education placement, teachers in a Community Day School participated in an open-ended survey. Based on teacher perceptions, we can examine the impacts of Project Based Learning on students experiencing academic and behavior challenges, based on teachers’ perceptions.

These findings were measured by the 2010 and 2012 North Carolina Teacher Working Conditions Survey (NC TWCS) data, as well as staff focus-group dialogue at three selected schools. The participant groups consisted of an elementary, middle, and high school/secondary school in a school system in the foothills of North Carolina. -- Throughout the study, efforts that have been made by the three leaders at these schools to increase the perspectives and perceptions of teachers in the areas of teacher leadership, school leadership, professional development, instructional practices and support, and overall culture and climate were noted (Hirsch, Sioberg, Robertson, & Church, 2010). As Sawchuk (2009) explained, "Working conditions, like professional collaboration, can be addressed at the district and school levels. The teachers and the principals have a lot of these conditions under their control to fix if they work together collaboratively to create a strong, coherent culture" (p. 2). The researcher used a mixed methods approach to review quantitative data from the 2010 and 2012 NC TWCS, as well as to collect qualitative perceptions, strategies, and best practices from three school staffs in their educational settings. -- The survey comparison data and the informal focus-group dialogue with staff members were utilized, analyzed, and summarized in order to obtain insight as to the skill sets and strategies these leaders used to create positive working and learning conditions for their teachers and students.
