Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the expectancies and task values held by Singaporean adolescents about learning music and other school subjects (English, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education, and Art) across Primary 6, Secondary 1, and Secondary 2 levels (Grades 6 to 8). The data was analyzed according to gender and music student status (music students, high aspiring non-music students, low aspiring non-music students) in order to provide suggestions that would foster music instruction within the Singaporean school system. A total of n = 1,733 participants from three primary and four secondary schools in Singapore completed a web-based survey questionnaire that was grounded in the Eccles and Wigfield expectancy-value theoretical framework as adapted in a series of studies by McPherson and his colleagues. The study found that music and non-music students held different perceptions of competence and valuing about school music. School music was generally less valued by students, particularly the low aspiring non-music students, when compared to the other school subjects. In addition, it was found that valuing of music among older adolescents was lower than their younger counterparts. Finally, the study found that students0́9 perceived usefulness of school music predicted their intention to enroll in instrumental music instruction outside of school. Implications arising from the study highlight the need for the music profession to evolve students0́9 negative attitudes towards school music. Providing students with positive classroom musical experiences and adopting differential teaching approaches to cater to students0́9 varied motivational profiles towards studying music in school were suggested as ways of raising the status of school music education. The need to assert and substantiate the role music can and should play in the education of all children is a continuing challenge within the Singapore education system, but one that must be addressed if school music is to become a more prominent subject within schools.

Book excerpt: Education in Singapore is seen as a key instrument to equip the next generation with resources to meet the needs of a Knowledge-Based Economy in a globalize world. The goal of this study is to develop a Music Education Curriculum Framework consistent with a Knowledge-Based Economy (KMCF) for Singapore neighborhood secondary schools. It provides the general context of music education in Singapore and conducts research to reveal the perspectives of key cross-sector stakeholders in music education, namely: The Ministry of Education (MOE) music and curriculum planning and development officers, National Institute of Education music academics, principals, general classroom music teachers and over 600 students. The curriculum framework will focus on the desirable qualities of Knowledge-Based Economy (KBE), particularly creativity, innovation, risk-taking, entrepreneurship and lifelong learning which have been strongly emphasized by the Singaporean government. In the light of their vision of thinking Schools, Learning Nation, the Ministry of Education is repositioning and reorienting the education system by implementing numerous initiatives and policies. The intention is to foster flexibility and diversity in a broad-based and holistic education, but the main focus to date has been on information technology, problem-solving and core subjects rather than on the creative aspects of the arts. By surveying students, this research aims to find out to what extent students find their music lessons satisfactory and whether their perspectives is compatible with those of other stakeholders. Students generally do not take music seriously, and the public perception is that a music career is limited to performing and teaching. The model curriculum framework will indicate further related careers, and the personal growth that comes through a genuine engagement with music. The Ministry of Education controls the school curriculum, structure of education, examinations, teacher qualifications and conditions of service. In 2005 it initiated a Teach Less, Learn More initiative which promoted student engagement. However, despite the rhetoric of classroom-based, teacher-owned and school-driven learning, it did not consult teachers or students and therefore failed as a vital learning organization which involved all participants in deciding future directions. For Senge (1994, p.13), a learning organization is a place where people are continually discovering how they create their reality. The curriculum design is an example of an example of an open system which this thesis addresses the issue of providing a structured programme flexible enough to adapt to contextual needs while providing the standards and outcomes needed in a competitive knowledge-based economy. This thesis makes its original contribution to knowledge by applying an open system model from organisational theory to a conventional music curriculum.

Book excerpt: The focus of this study was on the identification of pupils' attitudes towards music education in secondary schools of Cyprus. There is a growing body of literature about the Cypriot music education scene, although the majority of studies to date have concentrated on primary school settings with less attention given to the secondary sector; thus, the purpose of this study was to address the current gap in the Cypriot music education literature as well as to contribute more generally towards research in the field of music education. A theoretical model was constructed in the light of previous literature in the field and in response to Bronfenbrenner'j influential ecological theory about child development. The model highlighted the influence of personal, social and educational aspects on the formation of pupils' attitudes and was used in the creation of the research instrument as part of the empirical enquiry within this thesis. A Pancyprian questionnaire was carried out with a sample of 2996 pupils aged between 12 and 18 years of age representing all of the districts of Cyprus in both Gymnasium and Lyceum schools. The questionnaire focussed on gathering pupils' perceptions about secondary music education and the subject of Music in school. Different personal and demographic factors were cross-examined in the data, including the effects of gender, district, experience, school type and school grade. Overall, pupils' attitudes were largely negative, since almost half of the participants provided unenthusiastic and unfavourable responses towards school Music (45.9%), while there was more positive feedback about private music tuition in Cyprus (69.3%). Pupils' attitudes were based on personal beliefs and views about the subject as well as levels of interest and knowledge gained from music lessons. The study showed that significant relationships exist among five key variables in the creation of pupils' attitudes, so female pupils, experienced pupils, Gymnasium pupils (especially those within Grade A) and pupils from the Lamaca district were more positive towards the subject of Music, in comparison with others.
