Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of St. Paul, His Character and Opinions I do not pretend to add anything to the vast accumulation of detail that has been piled about the central figure of the Apostle, till his personality is buried under the mass of material collected. For this I have not the learning. For original research, a study of the localities, their relation to the narrative in the Acts, and for the rehabilitation of the credibility of the book that had been sharply assailed, Professor Ramsay's works have been epoch-making.1 I have made no explorations in Asia Minor, and so can add nothing. There have been studies of St. Paul, as a figure in a stained glass window, in which drawing and colouring are unreal, and the setting is lead. Such studies may be said to be of the past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul and the Roman Law: And Other Studies on the Origin of the Form of Doctrine And if this second opinion be true, a study of the intellectual environment of the writers of the New Testament, and of the early Fathers, is necessary to a comprehension of the develop ment of Christian theology. The following pages are designed to contribute in some small measure to this study, which has been too much neglected in the past, and is only beginning to receive the attention it deserves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Character of St. Paul In Paul's preaching I discover nothing of that spirit which delights in doing violence to the feelings of an audience, and takes its pastime in communicating offensive truths in the most offensive manner. He is conscious of his commission, but has no wish on every occasion to put forth all its powers. On the contrary, nothing is more striking in the discourses of St. Paul than the tenderness and delicacy displayed in them towards the persons he is called upon to instruct, exhort, or reprove. He faithfully administers the wormwood, but still anoints the lip of the cup ... So, in his pastoral intercourse with the people, practical good sense (as we should say of an ordinary man) ever governed his advice ... His maxims are all such as would be considered by the most politic children of this world judicious and wise ... And I cannot but observe what a fund of evidence for the truth of the Gospel lies in this feature of St. Paul's character - for as nobody, I am sure, can read his Epistles, and doubt for a moment the sincerity of his own belief in the doctrines he was teaching, so no one can contemplate the considerate temperament, so distinctly manifested in him, without feeling equally sure that he was no visionary, no dupe to fancies of his own, but was a man to weigh testimony before he yielded to it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Many-Sided Paul: A Study of the Character of the Great Apostle as Unfolded in the Acts and the Pauline Epistles I deem it unnecessary to justify myself for adding another to the almost endless list of essays-upon this noble subject. It is one of the best evidences Of the divine source of the apos tle's power and grandeur of spiritual stature that the world never tires of our theme. The study of St. Paul is like the study of life itself, - so long as men recognize as features of human thought and character the struggle with guilt and sin, and the aspiration after holiness and God and a blessed immortality, so long will the Christian consciousness gladly welcome new trib utes to the wondrous personality of this slave Of Christ; so long will the last word concern ing him yet remain unsaid. I am not unfamiliar with many of the radical and unsympathetic treatises on the general sub ject that have appeared in English and German during the past three decades; but I do not deem it necessary here to name even a partial list of them. A good bibliography of the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans: With Notes, Comments, Maps, and Illustrations The reader will observe also a peculiarity in the mechanical construction of the volume. The Introduction gives a general View of the Apostle's life, character, and writings, as they are interpreted in this volume. The volume itself consists of two parts, though interwoven; chapters accompanying the Revised Version, which may be read through as a continuous and connected book by one who wishes to get the general interpretation of the Epistle presented in this volume; and annotations in each chapter accompanying the Old Version, in which the student will find stated in some detail the critical reasons for that interpretation. With these words of explanation, this volume and its conclusions are submitted to the candid consideration of the Christian public, in the hope that, whatever may be the final verdict as to either its spirit or its methods, it may lead to a fresh study of the Epistle to the Romans, and so confer the intellectual and spiritual benefit which such study always confers on the candid and painstaking student of Scripture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical Examination of the Life of St. Paul Although the actions of this celebrated Apostle, related in the Acts, and his doctrine contained in his Epistles, were al ready perfectly knownto me, yet to conform myself to your desires, and give 'you proofsof my docility, I have again read those works, and I can assure you that I have done it with the greatest attention. You will judge of that yourself, by the reflections I send you; they will at least prove to you' that I have read with attention. A superficial glance is only' likely to deceive us or leave us in error. The passions (and the prejudices of men prevent them from examining with candour, and from their indolence they are often disgusted with the researches necessary for discovering truth; that has also been With so much care veiled from their eyes: but it is in vain to cover it, its Splendour will sooner or later 'shine forth; the works of enthusiasm Or imposture, will always end by betraying themselves. As -for the rest, read and judges You will find, I think, at least, some reasons for abating a little from that high Opinion, that prejudice gives us' of the Apostle of the Gentiles, and of the religious sys tern of the Christians, oflwhich St. Paul was evidently the true architect. I am not ignorant that it is very difficult to undo at one blow the ideas to which the, mind has been so long accustomed; but whatever may be your judgment it will not alter the sentiments of friendship and attachment which are due to the goodness of your heart. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Individuality of Saint Paul In many of the translations I am deeply indebted to Dr. Moffatt's The New Testament, A New Trans lation. Where his rendering has been used verbatim, the fact has been duly pointed out. Among modern commentaries, there stands out conspicuously Dr. Denney's on Romans in The Expositor's Greek Testament. How conspicuously it does so in my own case the book itself will show, even where no open acknowledgment is made. As I claim no originality, it is superfluous to mention indebtedness in other directions. In the matter of references, I have tried to keep in View, so far as possible, the reader and student of the English Bible, who seeks fearlessly to keep in touch with the modern and constructive side of the historical method. Obscurantism, and indifference to the accredited results of modern scholarship are the besetting sin of much - it may be otherwise effective - popular exegesis and evangelical appeal. To paraphrase Cromwell's words about the State, God, in seeking men to serve Him, takes no notice of their opinions; if they be willing faithfully to serve Him, that satisfies. It is, however, His will that we'serve Him with heart, soul, strength, and mind. There may be an intellectual cross also, which we are asked to carry if not our own, then that which rests on our neighbour's shoulders. The good news for the new day is the ancient novelty of a living Christ, who is competent, as ever, to be His own Interpreter and Commentator, through the Spirit that leads into all the truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul: The Man and His Work The greater part of this book appeared last year as a series of articles in the "Christliche Welt" In answer to repeated requests, I have determined to recast these articles and publish them as a book. There is scarcely a page which has not been changed more or less, and two entire chapters, "The Theologian" and "The Man," have been added. I was more especially inclined to undertake this work because this book forms a necessary supplement to my Jesus in the Nineteenth Century, for it shows how the Gospel came to make that concordat with the "world," i.e. with the ancient state and its religion and morality which we call "church." I have tried to show how necessary and how salutary this compromise was, by what pure motives it was animated, but also with what dangers it was pregnant for the Gospel itself. One other object I have had in writing: I have wanted to make our people understand and love Paul. And so nothing has pleased me more than when schoolmasters and other teachers of religion urged me to publish the articles in book form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on the Character and Practical Writings of Saint Paul, Vol. 1 of 2 Was the brightest human example, as well as the most illustrious human teacher. The Writer is persuaded that many read the Epistles of Saint Paul with deep reverence for the station they hold in the Inspired Oracles, without considering that 3they are at the same 'time supremely excellent for their unequalled applicable tuess to life and manners that many, while they highly respect the Writer, think him too high for ordinary use.
