Clearly, the brain codes, and stores, complex information about the relative positions of objects in space; how this is accomplished is not only important for an understanding of stereopsis but could also be instructive for the analysis of other processing systems in the brain. For example, disparate visual input is simultaneous input and, from what is known about stereopsis, that processing appears to occur in parallel. Local stereopsis is the point-by-point comparison of the images on the two retinae and the calculation of the associated disparity for every feature on the visual image. Global stereopsis is the integration of all the coded, local disparities into an overall perception of a three dimensional scene. (js).
