Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 39 reports theses submitted in 1994, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Pedestrian characteristics and capabilities which affect walking demand are summarized using the results of previous research. Reported research results are also used to examine the effectiveness of the physical walking system by analyzing various components A list of pedestrian planning and facility design guidelines is derived using the information that was reviewed. Total walking distance emerged as the predominant factor controlling suburban pedestrian demand Few people were willing to walk further than one mile (1.6 km.) from generator to attractor, with a majority unwilling to walk further than one-half mile (0.8 km.). These findings are tested in a set of case studies of pedestrianism in suburban areas that are described in Volume II of the study report. In volume 2, Pedestrianism in suburban areas was examined from the point of view of the walking and non-walking public, Nine case studies were conducted to determine the role of walking as an exclusive mode of travel. The sites examined comprised the three major types of pedestrian facilities--overpasses, tunnels, and at-grade crossings--plus locations where new pedestrian facilities are anticipated. In. each case, linkages between land uses were established to define reasons for local travel. The data were then analyzed to show how pedestrian facilities act to sustain the linkages. Various pedestrian characteristics were found to be related to walking activity. For example, age has a direct bearing on walking behavior, as children constitute the largest walking group. Acceptable walking distances up to about one-quarter mile (. 4 km) were given for adults, while distances up to one mile (1.6 km) offer little impedance to children. Along with distance, fear of attack is a primary impedance to the potential adult walker, especially the female. Overpasses were cited as the most desirable pedestrian accommodation to bypass traffic, while the public showed little enthusiasm for tunnels due to the mischief they attract. People have also shown that, if the reason exists, they will cross heavy traffic to travel by foot. The results of this study are ultimately interpreted to provide the Department with general principles for successful pedestrian planning in suburban areas. Finally, the survey findings support the idea of combined pedestrian and bicycle ways.

Book excerpt: Understanding how environmental attributes can influence the behavior of pedestrians is of concern for public health officials, transportation engineers, and urban planners. To what degree, if any, do these various environmental characteristics influence how much and for how long people walk? To answer these questions, this thesis analyzes large-scale spatiotemporal pedestrian activity records collected from the users of a mobile phone application in Greater Boston, Massachusetts and the San Francisco Bay Area, California. The dataset contains the locative traces of recreational and utilitarian pedestrian walking activities which include the GPS and temporal records of individuals. In sum, this dissertation considered over 2.2 million trips from 135,000 people. This thesis addresses the topic in three parts. The first study examines the impacts of climate and environment on active transportation trips, and finds varying effects of different types of weather. However, these associated effects are influenced by a trip's purpose, as well as by season and location. The second study analyzes the impact of built environment characteristics on walking activities at the urban scale. These characteristics are generally defined as components of the density, diversity, and design of urban spaces. The study finds that activity characteristics are moderated by the features of location, and that infrastructure for walking, transportation access, and destinations have a positive influence on walking volume. Walking durations are largely invariant to these factors. The third study explores the effects of urban attributes on the aggregated route choices of individuals through the use of revealed preferences. The study's findings suggest that pedestrians are sensitive to the presence of retail destinations and transit availability in their choice of path. Despite this, architectural and street-level design features have mixed effects. These analyses contribute a new approach to understanding the interrelationships between the built environment and pedestrian activity, and how those effects contribute to the walkability of communities. This thesis also tests the usefulness of passive, pervasive mobile devices in evaluating urban space, and considers their potential to aid in the development of human-centered urban design-from an analysis of the quantified self toward the understanding of the quantified community.

Therefore, there have been searches for variables which can generate and sustain such pedestrian activity. Studies show that though there are some universal variables, some of them are specific to local context. This study searched for such variables in physical environment, which can create and sustain such vibrancy in the context of urban commercial centers in Malaysia. With a method of observing pedestrian activity, and hypothesizing the intensity of people as the parameter of such vibrancy, this study adopted several key statistical methods to come up with some interesting findings. It showed that certain components of mixed land use patterns and streetscapes are significant to generate and sustain pedestrian vibrancy.
