Measures on a single cylinder research engine with combined usage of a particle number measurement system, a particle size distribution measurement system as well as optical diagnostics and thermodynamic analysis enable an in-depth assessment of particle formation and oxidation. Therefore, numerous optical diagnostic techniques for spray visualisation (Mie-scattering, High-Speed PIV) and soot detection (High-Speed-Imaging, Fiber optical diagnostics) are deployed. Two injectors with different hydraulic flows but identical spray-targeting are characterised and compared by measurements in a pressurised chamber. The operation at higher engine load and low engine speed is in the focus of the experimental work at the engine test bench. Thereby, the low flow velocities in the combustion chamber, caused by the low engine speed, as well as the large amount of fuel injected are major challenges for the mixture formation process. A substantial part of the thesis thus focusses on the detailed analysis of the mixture formation process, which is consisting of fuel injection, interaction of the in-cylinder charge motion with the fuel injected and the fuel properties. Measures for the optimisation of the mixture formation process and the minimisation of the particle number emissions are analysed and evaluated. The charge motion is manipulated by the impression of a directed flow, the variation of the valve timings and valve open curve. The injection process is influenced by a reduction of the hydraulic flow of the injector and an increase of the injection pressure up to 50 MPa. The investigations show fundamental effects and potentials of different variation parameters concerning their emissions reduction potential at the exemplary operation at high engine load. Due to the simultaneous analysis of the in-cylinder charge motion and a thermodynamic analysis, the results can be transferred to different engines.

Book excerpt: The road transport is responsible of a considerable amount of pollutants emissions at the worldwide scale. To tackle this issue, many laws are trying to give a framework to reduce the emissions at the global scale. The law are always more restrictive, and they oriented the car manufacturers to the reduction of their gasoline engine size. This phenomenon, called downsizing, lead to the use of direct injection in order to improve the power/volume ratio of the engine. However, with direct injection the problem of particle emissions arose. Indeed, the liquid film generated during the injection process are responsible of inhomogeneities in the combustion chamber which lead to particles formation. In this context, the study of the fuel films in the combustion chamber is a major concern. To perform this study several experimental apparatus are designed in this thesis. A high-pressure 3-hole solenoid injector is used in order to generate liquid films. The generation and the spreading of the liquid films is observed and modelled. Then the thermal aspects of the spray impingement is studied, to characterise the local heat transfer. These thermal loss are delaying the evaporation of the liquid film, which will lead to inhomogeneities in the combustion chamber and particle generation. A modelling of the heat transfer is also proposed, finally the evaporation rate of alkanes films is proposed. Mono and multicomponents films are studied, these measures were used to calibrate a numerical model for the evaporation of thin liquid films on hot walls. Together with the previous experimental investigationsand models a test campaign on a real engine has been held. The objective is to confirm that, the results produced out of the engine are transposable to the engine (with careful attention). Conclusions on the different aspects are then presented.

The smoke exhausting from a combustor was found to consist of carbon black, agglomerated into soot. The carbon black had been partially burned in its passage through the flame zone. The smoke resulted from the incomplete combustion of the vaporized fuel; it was not the result of the pyrolysis of fuel droplets. The soft carbon in the dome of the combustor liner was found to consist of carbon black and soot intermixed with indeterminate complexes such as high-boiling fuel ends and partly polymerized and pyrolyzed heavy hydrocarbons. The hard carbon on the walls of the combustor liner was found to be largely petroleum coke. The coke was apparently formed by the liquid phase cracking, pyrolysis, and subsequent coking on the liner wall of fuel from the spray nozzle.

The emissions must be controlled as stipulated by the society without sacrificing the legendary fuel economy of the diesel engines. These important drivers caused innovations in diesel engineering like re-entrant combustion chambers in the piston, lower swirl support and high pressure injection, in turn reducing the ignition delay and hence the nitric oxides. The limits on emissions are being continually reduced. The- fore, the required accuracy of the models to predict the emissions and efficiency of the engines is high. The phenomenological combustion models based on physical and chemical description of the processes in the engine are practical to describe diesel engine combustion and to carry out parametric studies. This is because the injection process, which can be relatively well predicted, has the dominant effect on mixture formation and subsequent course of combustion. The need for improving these models by incorporating new developments in engine designs is explained in Chapter 2. With “model based control programs” used in the Electronic Control Units of the engines, phenomenological models are assuming more importance now because the detailed CFD based models are too slow to be handled by the Electronic Control Units. Experimental work is necessary to develop the basic understanding of the pr- esses.

In view of this background, a group research project, "Exploration of Combustion Mechanism", was established to explore the mechanism of combustion, especially that of diffusive combustion, and also to find efficient ways to control the combustion process for better utilization of fuel and the reduction of pollutant emission. The group research was started, after preparatory activity of 2 years, in April 1988, for a period of 3 years, as a project with a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research of Priority Area subsidized by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Japan. The entire group of 43 members was set up as an organizing committee of 13 members, and five research groups, consisting of 36 members. The research groups were: (1) Steady combustion, (2) Unsteady spray combustion, (3) Control of combustion, (4) Chemistry of combustion, and (5) Effects of fuels. At the beginning of the project it was agreed that we should pursue the mechanism of combustion from a scientific viewpoint, namely, the target of the project was to obtain the fundamentals, or "know why", rather than "know how" of combustion.
